Actually, we don't know which kernel will be used finally. Oleg reported that he has had an engineering sample of RT-N16 and firmwares based both on 2.4 and 2.6

At least we know for sure that asus tests 2.6, however, we can only hope that it finally chooses it...

What is the advantage of implementing the 2.6 kernel?

well... bug fixes, better hardware support, better software support (most software these days are written for 2.6 kernel but are backwards compatible with 2.4)

the router would actually come close to a real modern pc when it comes to functionality etc.

I mean... they make new versions of the kernel for a reason

I think this thing is going to be cheaper...
if you google online a bit you can find some prices already! (chinese ones or something).

    like this one: http://product.pchome.net/network_wi...16/143413.html
    (loads a bit slow)
scroll down and you see "¥1595" wich comes down to around 172 Euros/233 us $

that makes it a whole lot more affordable I guess

    Those are the new models:

    1- ASUS RT-N16
2- ASUS RT-N16 ROG (BLACK) - Maybe better specs
3- ASUS RT-N17 STORAGE ROUTER - Maybe better specs
    4- ASUS D200 (MEDIA CENTER/NAS/ROUTER) - ATOM CPU
    5- ASUS RT-N13U - Broadcom Low End
