Hello
I have a problem with my WL-500g router. It can't recognize my HP LaserJet 1020, altough I saw this device as WORKING in the compatibility list.
I've tried everything but still can't get it working, please help me.Originally Posted by nieman426

I have been searching the forum and the net for the solution but found nothing so far.

HP LJ 1020 is not supported, as it requires firmware to be loaded on the power up.
The report seems to be invalid.
And what can I do then? Won't this change in the near future?Originally Posted by Oleg
What does it actually mean 'requires firmware to be loaded on the power up'?
And what about nieman426's report??
I'm very sad about this....
Might sound stupid, is it the printer's firmware that causes the problem?
Anyway what's the difference between model 1010 and 1020, they're almost the same, and 1010 proved to work for a friend of mine on the same router.
You can try to connect the printer to PC, print something and then to reconnect it to router. Perhaps it will work until you power off the printer or until some error condition occurs (paper out detected etc.).
1010 does not need a firmware, that's why it works...Originally Posted by pardonfiu
Sorry, I do not have 1020, so I could not help you. Theoretically you could add firmware loader to the firmware to make it work.
Well, bad news for you my friend...
The LaserJet 1020 printing logic is in its printing driver, not in the printer. The so called "processor" on 1020 just dumps on the paper data prepared by the driver. This is what HP calls "Host-based printing", and also the reason why this laser is so cheap.
I had similar lousy experience with my old Lexmark which was flawlessly printing on Windows 98, but once I switched to Windows 2000 there was no appropriate driver for it because, as Lexmark nicely put it, it was an obsolete model with no plan for driver updates.
Bottom line: hp LJ 1020 will not print through 500g/gx.
To print through 500g/gx you need a printer which support a form of printer language (PCL, PS...), and preferably has more than 2 Mb of memory (complex pages with pictures or just large pictures will not be properly printed even if 1020 is connected to a computer with a proper driver). Needles to say, LaserJet 1010 has both.
Cheers,
V3
Thank you for your help! I'm a bit disappointed...
I bought this printer a few weeks ago and wanted to connect it to a router or a device which enables using it over the air.
Then even if I buy a stand alone print server (Linksys or any other) it wouldn't work, would it? Shame on HP... I don't want to plug the USB into my notebook every time I want to print, needless to say, I wanted to use it via wireless.
I googled a little just 4 teh fun of it ... look at the bottom of this page. The red written printer types ....
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101216.asp
I know it won't help you, but it at least confirms your theory.
Still you could check if HP themself offer printserver that support their 1020 ...
EDIT: this link from HP support forums tells it all
http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/f...hreadId=953785
Get another printer, setup a windows box to act as printserver, or live with it as it is. Sorry....

Well, consider buying Samsung instead (ML series). Seems like it's the only vendor who is still producing real printers, not the WinPrinters.Originally Posted by pardonfiu
That is not nice
I also bought a HP LaserJet 1020 some time ago. And now that we have moved to a new address, so I wanted to connect the HP LaserJet 1020 to the Asus WL-500g.
And now see that it isn't going to work
So there is really no way it is going to work?
BTW: The following is working right now
I hope tommorow it is stil workingOriginally Posted by Technik

Well, it's possible for HP LJ 1000/1005/1020.
1000/1005 seems to have firmware which fits to flashfs, 1020 needs external usb drive to store firmware, as it's large.
I've put some stuff here: http://oleg.wl500g.info/hplj/
You've to download right firmware sihp1000.dl/sihp1005.dl/sihp1020.dl to wl500g and upload to printer like this:
This should load a firmware to the 1020 and it should work until power off or something. Check this.Code:cd /tmp wget http://oleg.wl500g.info/hplj/usb_printerid wget http://oleg.wl500g.info/hplj/sihp1020.dl chmod +x usb_printerid ./usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0
In fact, someone should write a hotplug script to automate firmware loading...
Waiting for feedback.
That works great over hereOriginally Posted by Oleg
I will add the following it to my boot-script later on.
./usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0

Well, you've to store the firmware on the usb stick/drive connected to the wl500g and load it in the post-mount. The drawback, is that firmware should be reloaded if you've turn your printer off at some point.
I now have the firmware on the usb stick (after connecting a usb hub to my router). And added the line "tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/start_hp1020" (wich contains the line "/tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat /tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0") to "/usr/local/sbin/post-mount"Originally Posted by Oleg
But this doesn't work.
When i run "/usr/local/sbin/post-mount" after the router has booted the printer reacts (always tested after off/on switching of the printer)
