Also i sometimes get a message "Hardware error" when pinging.
Well i don't really know what to say...
Basically the ping is stupidly slow when connected via wireless. Just pinged 192.168.1.1
84ms
24ms
106ms
16ms
The signal quality is -53dBm
The noise is -99dBm
Router firmware is 1.9.7.2 (latest).
I'm located about 2 meters from the router.
When connected via cable the ping is fine (<1ms). I didn't have this problem with my previous WRT54G so its definately the router.
The wireless card in my laptop is Broadcom 4318.

I come from the same situation. I bricked my WRT54g and thought it was time for a new router. The linksys served me well for over 5 years.
I got myself a wl500gP and set it up. Stock firmware v. 1.9.7.5.
It is working together with a wl500g deluxe which acts as a printserver only (via WDS). The network set up is the same as before, and everything is working correctly.
Signal strength is excellent, but I noticed "lagging" when internet pages are viewed.
I pinged the router several times, and found out that the pings are very inconsistent. Sometimes very fast, sometimes very slow, sometimes time-outs.
I used Net Stumbler to see if any neighbours were interfering, but that was not the case. Same as with my Linksys, I use channel 7, which no one else is using.
Anyone any suggestions??
In which mode are you operating this 500gp? I just experienced the samething when operating it in Home Gateway mode if I don't remember incorrectly. TRied open-wrt with sameresult. Inconsistent ping times, sometimes troublesome traffic and so on, After I changedthe operation point to router (I think) the problem was completely gone with perfectly stable link at the very same power levels as before. THis I can not explain but it worked for me.
