A little more research shows it has to do with my $TEMP (or in windows terms %TEMP%) environment setting. Unsetting it had the result of defaulting to C:\Windows\Temp which still results in a upload error. More research tomorrow.
I'm trying to upload the custom firmware but it fails whatever I do. A firmware reset does not work. For the result from then firmware restoration tool see below. Seems the tool tries to loads it to a strange location (My local home temp map)

Firmware Restoration tool calls nasload.exe which calls nasunpack.exe to unpack he image to TRX format. The nasunpack.exe fails on WL700gE_1.0.4.6_kc_02a.nas (Try nasunpack -d <tempname> <image> from cmd.exe). It does not fail on the original image WL700gE_1.0.4.6.nas
Also I found another free tool which does the same AsusTrxExtract in this thread.(actual message) This one also fails on WL700gE_1.0.4.6_kc_02a.nas but succeeds on WL700gE_1.0.4.6.nas
Anybody any ideas ?
My guess is that your file is corrupt. Here's the md5 sum of my copy of WL700gE_1.0.4.6_kc_02a.nas:
