i assume you tried client mode too?
anyway if not, read the Rules first and you'll find more answers needed
I try to connect a second pc to my ADSL-router for some days now but only get disappointing results.
ADSL-Modem/Router: Draytek2500We
first pc: netgear WG311 pci card, and works fine
second pc: ASUS WL500g via 100mbit connecting to pc
I tested a lot with the different setups as AP/WDS/Hybrid but no one
really worked?
Has anyone an idea of how to set it up the right way? Would be great

So lets go into more detail:
The Draytek 2500We ADSL/WLAN-Router is connected to the 1&1 DSL ISP.
I use for the wireless the supported 802.11b standard of the router(g is unsupported 8( ). I setup the ssid "homelan" which is hided and use the channel 6 for communication. For some kind of security I use the wep128. Ping is blocked(but that should only work for the DSL connection). Router uses the DHCP function and assigns IP numbers from 169.254.124.1-50. The second DHCP function for a separate network is disabled.
In my first pc I use a netgear wg311 card, that is able to go for 802.11g(but b mode also works fine!). The signal strength I receive is pretty good, because the distance is only 3-4m(signal of about 90% and up).
So whats up with the WL500g??![]()
I setup the same ssid as above, selected the same channel and use the same wep128 key. The network card that is installed in this (second) pc is set to get the tcp/ip number from the DHCP(draytek), as it is configured in the first pc.
Now the WL500g is working in AP mode(config. in system setup) and in the advanced menu i selected ethernet bridge. So far I got at least a message that he is connecting(whatever this means...) but finally I still see no further DHCP'd unit in the DHCP cache of the router.
I hope this helps a bit to understand the situation.
Maybe you know the final hint to get the things running.
Best regards and thanks in advance!

PS: What do you exactly understand under "client mode"??
I searched the forum for this words but didn't find an appropriate definition for.
Wireless cards (whether in your PC, draytek modem, or wl500g router) can basically be in 3 different modes: ad-hoc, client, AP.Originally Posted by Meuchi
The ad-hoc mode is used where all the members of the wireless network use ad-hoc and they are all equal. It has some really nice properties, but also some serious drawbacks, so it's usually not used.
The other two modes are used together: one of the members of the network is designated as the AP and all the rest are clients. There can only be one AP per network. I.e. you can't have both your draytek and your wl500g in AP mode at the same time (unless they're on different wireless networks, of course).
Thank you very much for your clarification!
Now I understand quite more the meaning of the client mode.
So what comes out of that for the WL500g is that he has to be switched into Wireless Distribution Mode(WDS) or Hybrid, am I right?
Do I definatley have to place the mac address of the AP(draytek) I want to connect into the list of wanted AP for the WL500g?
Hello again!
It took some time till I made a scheme of my topology, but I have it in hands now!
As you will see, there are three sections: One is the existing wlan station where I have a well working connection to the internet from my first pc(second station) with the netgear card inside.
The third station is the pc which should use the wl500g to get connected to the ADSL modem/wlan/router combo. I tried a lot of things, *sigh* I am quite confused from trying out so much things and I do not know what exactly I could write down to make it easier for you to understand. So my hope is that you will see what I want to do in the scheme.
Maybe it help a bit.
I know it is very annoying to answer those noob question like this but I hope you can give some neat feedback.
regards, Markus
Sure your WL-500g WAN IP connection settings are correct? If you are not using Automatic IP but Static IP you may also need to set WAN DNS IP(probably identical to the gateway adress of your Draytek)
If this doesn't work can you please post the WAN IP settings of your WL-500g?
Perhaps you may also find the info you need somewhere in this thread: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=856

WL-500g, WL-138g, WL-160g
try this:
try using firmware 1.8.1.7-1 (or -2)
turn wl500g into Hybrid mode
also turn your draytek into hybrid mode
give them both the exact same configuration (ssid/channel/wep/wpakeys etc)
assign an IP to the wl500g (as lan) which fits into your network
disable DHCP at the WL500g (do not use WAN port either) (yes just let it run in home gateway mode.. it does not use it in this way because dhcp comes from the netgear)
networks should be bridged together now..

First I have to say thanks to Antiloop and Brubber!
Both gave me quite worthful hints to find the solution.
I was searching for a way of pushing the router into hybrid or wds mode -
but I didn't find anything!? So my guess is that the router can only handle AP mode. If this comes true I will be quite sad 8(
I will go more into detail and find some fine specs for the draytek, hoping to reveal the needed bridge/wds mode.
Thats it for the moment, will come back!
