Why would someone put dd-wrt on the premium ? I've no experience with dd-wrt, but judging from its roots, it was developed for more limited machines (with less memory and no USB ports), so dd-wrt would not add anything that original ASUS fw already has, not to speak of the extensions that Oleg, OpenWRT, etc. offer.

They have this very frightening sentence on dd-wrt site about ASUS WL-500gP: "Flaky NVRAM, sometimes settings get corrupted and require hardware reset ". Is that specific to dd-wrt ? Or do other firmwares suffer of the same ?

OpenWRT don't have webinterface (only x-wrt beta)
Oleg don't support Client Wireless Mode.

really bad guesses... it's not developed for limited machines! it supports a lot more routers and there's a x86 version too!!!
usb will be official supported in v24. v23sp2 and earlier don't have usb support included for wl500gx, you need to install the package yourself (have a look in the ddwrt wiki).

imho, ddwrt has too much option in general use. if you want to build a hotspot, sip-network, vpn etc. everything is already built-in.

openwrt is a bit more complicated (no gui), but you could built your own
    optimzied firmware.

oleg's firmware is only optimzied for wl500gx. not much features in pre-compiled firmeware, but enough in general use.

BUT: why are you posting this thing in this board? wl500gx is supported by ddwrt, but still not 100% till v24!
