    Fine thing!

    16MB Dram in one Chip (4 Banks x 1mb x 32bit), 4MB Flash, as Usual.
Looks like 500g without bridge chip and second ethernet device, but added Ide-controller (with raid 0/1 support!) on internal PCI-Bus.
Looks it has a good chance to become somthing better than just a Fileserver ...

Bought it yesterday, Mycom has it bundled with a 40 or 60 gig laptop HD.

It's a very cool device, but I'm having a hard time connecting it as a client to the wl-500g. Most of my network is wired, I only connect a laptop and pda wirelessly. What I'm trying to do is switch off AP functionality on the wl-hdd, and have it wirelessly connect as a client to the wl-500g so my wired network can see it (It works when I connect a network cable to the wl-hdd but that's no fun). The status log keeps saying "connecting".

Did anyone else buy this thing? I also have a weird problem with the config. When I launch the asus config utility it finds the hdd (but only when it's wired). This should open the browser based config, but that webpage is closed within 1 second? Like someone presses alt-f4 very fast. Luckily my e800 pda could connect to it directly so I could configure it.

Only usb 1.1 on this one also, but it's only for reading usb sticks anyway.

Well, I got this baby working. It now connects as a client to my wl-500g. The drive is shared wirelessly to the wired network attached to the wl-500g. I created 3 partitions which show as shared drives under computer name WL-HDD. Now on to experiment what more I can do with this...

Web interface is exactly the same, will post some shots tonight. It has the same wireless settings as the wl500g to make it an AP, plus a client config to hook it up to other AP's. Storage settings include disk check, partitioning and security settings. Firmware can be restored but no firmware to be found, even on asus sites AND the cd-rom!

    Hmm,
    190 euro for 40Gb version
    220 euro for 60Gb version

Pretty cheap compared to WL-500g + HDD + External casing

BUT: with much less functionality. I won't trade my WL-500g in for this one.

The new WL-500gx has 2 usb ports. One can do (software) RAID with that one too and still have the possibility to connect Webcam and printers...
