USB HDD - how are they accessed?

After connecting a HDD over USb to the WL500gx, how is it accessed? FTP? Another method?

I am looking at using the Asus to allow me to have network storage for backup purposes. If the only option to access the USB HDD via the router is FTP then I may have to change my plans.

Any help appreciated.

if you have the official firmware on your router, you´ll only able to connect via ftp.
Flash your router with Oleg´s firmware and you will be able to connect to your hdd via samba (network share)
