Thread: WL-500g Premium

  1. #16
I have 500g premium and I can confirm that there is no firmware or sources on the supplied CD.

And the 1.9.6.2 is the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen... it is full of bugs and it crashes when saving settings...

Thanks guys. ASUS is violating GPL as usual...

Yet another question - is there anyone, who has tried benchmarking this box? Does it handle 100 Mb/s when routing? Does USB performs fast?

  3. #18
I have no idea how to test routing speed, but I did test speed of hard drive connected to the USB. And it is about 3MB/s when uploading to the disk and about 2.5MB/s when downloading from the disk. Quite slow.

But there is another problem. I tried uploading some big files (700MB) from local computer to the USB hard drive, and it timeouts before starting transfer. The bigest files that can be transfered from windows PC to the router is 75MB. On the other hand 700MB file can be uploaded from Mac OS X... Is this Windows or router problem? I tried to do it on two windows machines and even through WiFi but big files are no go in any case from windows.

Oh and the supplied firmware is awful... there is an update on asus site, but only in traditional chinese... wich is useless.

    Hi,

I tested the speed of the WL-500gP and I think it's pretty good. I transferred data with ~10 MB/s over the wire and with ~3.5 MB/s over wifi (the protocol used for testing was NFS).

I'm quite happy with my new aquisition and since I won't mess with the firmware for a couple of days, Oleg if you need something in particular from an "untouched" piece of hardware tell me. My firmware is 1.9.6.2 and the hardware version is "WL500gH-01-00-00-00".

As florin_m previously stated, only a part of the memory is "active", the output from "free" is:

    Code:
                  total used free shared buffers
      Mem: 14308 12880 1428 0 2500
     Swap: 0 0 0
    Total: 14308 12880 1428
I don't uderstand, why did ASUS bother to ship the router with 32MB if they are using only 16MB ?

The CD indeed doesn't contain any firmware or sources, a complete listing follows:

    Code:

You mean WAN to LAN transfer, right?

Ah, now that you mentioned it, I think I tested with both source and destination being in the LAN. I'm not sure because I did a lot of changes in my setup and I don't remember exactly when I ran the tests. It is possible that I actually ended up testing the switch instead of the router ...

Tomorrow I'll setup my network in such a way to force the packets to be routed between LAN and WAN. Afterwards I'll post my results here.

In the meantime you can consider my previous statements as "switching tests" not "routing tests". Anyways, I'm pretty happy with the WL-500gP since the speed I got using the switch is almost the same as using a crossover cable.

    Thumbs up Routing performance

    Hi,
    the routing performance is great:

    [tomek@xenon ~]$ wget -O /dev/null http://192.168.1.5/gpl2.zip
    --22:05:03-- http://192.168.1.5/gpl2.zip
    => `/dev/null'
    Connecting to 192.168.1.5:80... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 200 OK
    Length: 558,054,874 [application/zip]

    100%[================================================== ==============================>] 558,054,874 10.38M/s ETA 00:00

    22:06:02 (9.01 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [558,054,874/558,054,874]

the test was with enabled firewall and Logged packets set to both
    traffic from LAN to WAN

    Tomek

I noticed that the above mentioned firmware releasse description on the site changed to
    WL-500gP English/Traditional Chinese Firmware Version , version 1.9.6.8
Now it says 'English', too. But: release slot and date (22/5) is the same, filename is the same (ends with TW) and filedate is old (15/5). Anyone dare try it?

  9. #24
This is fishy. My friend tried the 1.9.6.8 a while ago and he said that it is unstable. But he didn't say anything if it is english or chinese. I'ill ask him and i'll let you know.

Well, switching speed is the same for all models, as they use the same switch core...

How did you connect to the router?

Via Telnet I could not connect to it.

Using the "hidden admin page" I issued some commands. The original ASUS firmware does not contain a telnet server.

Hah, asked the technical support about it. There's their answer:

Dear Customer, The firmware is dual language, you can install it to your module. I believe it's no problem. And the date is not important. Please note the version number.
Now I'm really tempted to risk of having to learn Traditional Chinese in order to keep using it.

    1.9.6.8

Firmware upgrade successful. Download Master still can't connect. Funny, in the firware relase notes they say 'Please use new utility to test Download Master (more up-to-date than version 1.1.0.7)', but the latest utility release 1.6.5.0 contains the very same version...

They have also removed the Radio Power box in the Wireless/Advanced settings page.

This sucks. I upgraded too and the signal is very weak, tx rate 5 Mbps. With the original firmware I had a pretty decent signal.

After giving the command wl txpwr1 :
TxPower is 127 qdbm, 31.75 dbm, 1496 mW Override is Off

After the command wl txpwr 40
TxPower is 64 qdbm, 16.00 dbm, 40 mW Override is Off

    After a restart
TxPower is 127 qdbm, 31.75 dbm, 1496 mW Override is Off

So, nothing changed. It's outperformed by my old Netgear WGR614 (same settings : WPA-PSK, same location) witch had tx 48 Mbps 24/7.

    Code:
                  total used free shared buffers
      Mem: 30516 13140 17376 0 2460
