    Thumbs down Lost Google connection

    Hi all,

My 500g stopped accessing international (non-Portuguese) sites last Sunday. Google, yahoo, cnn, hotmail.com, altavista, etc. I can however access most of the Portuguese sites.

I have contacted the cable provider but I seem to be the only one with this problem. Also, if I remove the router, all works fine. Firmware version is 1.7.5.6.

    Any ideas?

    Ps: Please forgive my English.

The problem is with mss setting. Did you use PPPoE or PPTP connection?

You have no direct control on mss/mtu setting, so it's mostly could not help you. Probably, you ISP (if it's small enough) use PPPoE and does not configured their settings correctly. Look at this thread http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=237 for info on how to change your mtu setting using windows utility.

    Oi MASF, tudo bem?

    Are you using Netcabo?
I had some problems webbrowsing in the last few days, seems their transparent proxy sometimes has DNS problems and cant resolve the destination host.
I read in slashdot that there were some problems with the root DNS servers from akamai, maybe thats it.

    Oi gryle, tudo bom!

I'm using Netvisao. So, basically it’s the same. It’s a bit strange to be able to access www.aeiou.pt and not www.sapo.pt . Maybe it’s what you say. Also, last Monday I could not access Symantec site and yesterday it was fine.

When I get home I’ll check MTU settings as suggested by Oleg. If that doesn’t solve it, I think I’ll just wait…

Força Portugal, today is the day!

Before playing with MTU setting try to ping the problematic site. If it does not pongs try MTU, otherwise you've DNS problems.

    Hello,

If I ping www.google.com it responds. Same with the other sites, they pong.
Does this mean it's not my router's problem?

Who knows. Try connecting PC directly to your cable to check this.

Well, that is the depressing part. Directly to the modem all works fine.

modem is a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem

I don't know how to check its configuration. It's all default. DHCP enabled, auto DNS, etc.

    Thumbs up

    Problem solved,

I sent an email to several people of the cable provider and one of them managed to take a closer look at my problem. In the end, it turned out that they were filtering the IP of my router and their helpdesk forgot to tell me. According to them, my router’s ip was under attack from some American universities and as a safety measure they filtered all international traffic to my router’s ip. Whenever I connected the modem, because of the different MAC address, a different ip was being assigned allowing me to navigate without problems.

The attacks have stopped, the cable company removed the filter and all is working fine.

Thank you all for your help
