I/O error and unshielded cable

I just find out why my wl500gx produces a lot of following errors during heavy load.

kernel: I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 12
kernel: SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 70000
kernel: I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 789
kernel: SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0 return code = 70000
kernel: I/O error: dev 08:01, sector 1

it's caused by unshielded wire conecting my internal 2,5'' 40 GB toshiba hd with asus mineboard. After opening casing, when cable was not so close to board, everything was fine. I change cable for shorter and shielded one, add additional 100uF cabacitor neer to HD and now everything works fine, even when i run 10 screen sessions copying a lot of data .

I can also confirm that this is a way to go. Shortened cable to 40cm and added 1000uF+100uF @ 5V, 200uF @ 12V supply. But I think that capacitors is the solution. Not the cable length. Anyway, worth trying when SCSI errors pop up.

Where did you find 12V cable? Do you have 3,5 inch hard drive with external power supply instaled ?

Yes. External Revoltec 3.5" alu case with both 12V and 5V supply wires. +12V seems to be obsolete nowdays for many drives.

My external HDD is good working with my PC(WinXP), but with the router it makes errors.

When I try to copy big files on it the router freezes or the HDD hangs. I have tried 2 different HDD-s, but the same result. I have now an 160GB Seagate HDD, with an LC POWER External USB 2.0 enclosure. Is that a cable issue too?

I had a USB key plugged in with the HDD when the error happened. Since only the HDD is plugged in, it works fine. Neither errors on heavy load. The problem is gone...

Hi Oleo,

Could you be more specific? I'm having the same problem. Where should I add the capacitor? USB HD side or WL-500gp side?

Shortening cable works. Capacitors are optional. It should be added at the connector inside case.
