    DynDNS.org verdict: abuse

I use dynamic IP from my ISP. The lease time is just 1 hour, so quite often WL500g updates ddns. See the log:

Dec 14 20:13:49 dhcp client: renew IP address 212.10.YYY.XXX from server 212.10.10.20
Dec 14 20:14:00 ddns[4025]: no changes, update considered abusive
Dec 14 21:36:19 dhcp client: renew IP address 212.10.YYY.XXX from server 212.10.10.20
Dec 14 21:36:27 ddns[4228]: no changes, update considered abusive

According to http://www.dyndns.org/support/abuse.html this is update to often, abusive. This issue was also found in the Linksys WRT54G
, but solved with new firmware http://www.linksys.com/download/vert...1.42.3_ver.txt .

I like to use the FTP-server feature, so I want the WL500g to update DDNS and like not use a "soft" solution.

Anyone have same problem and/or know the ASUS plan to solve this issue?

I do not know what kind of ISP you are using but chello (nl) has a lease time of 604800 seconds (7 days) which is quite normal. You can always change your dyndns account to "static" if dynamic updating causes problems. See www.dyndns.org for more information.

If I change to static but still just use dynamic at my ISP, what will happen when my ISP change my IP address?

(Static IP cost additional fee at my ISP)

Dyndns will be updated, however not as fast as dynamic.

OK, but when I switch my dyndns hostname to static and enable the ddns in WL500g I got the following message in the WL500g log:

Dec 30 20:59:45 ddns[847]: the hostname specified does not exist

I got a feeling that the dyndns client has to be different when using static ddns!?

I might have to build my own firmware to fix this problem, or hope (and wait) until a Linux guru is so kind to add the needed effort.

Guys, if you are looking for new custom firmware to fix this - I'm out of business, cause I'm not using ddns... But if someone figure out the problem (script is pretty simple, but seems should not cause the abuse) please post a patch. I will then patch the firmware.

In my opinion you should contact ASUS to fix the problem...

    Regards,
    Oleg.

    What hostname you type?
I got that message when I just type me host name.
I found it need type full name, like hostname.dyndsn.org...,etc

As far I can read, - this issue has already been fixed in the firmware to Linksys WRT54G, see first message in this thread. I am not aware if this fix is included in the published source code.

I have already requested a fix from ASUS, mid December, but until now no reply. I used http://www.asusmall.com.tw/forms/complaint_TSD.asp .

Sorry to hear that our Linux Guru (Oleg) is "out of (this) business". My life will continue without the ddns feature, so do not worry too much - be happy

Yes, I write my full hostname in the WL500g configuration, in my case: <myhostename>.homeip.net .

Yes, I've studied the WRT54G solution. But they are using ddns solution other than one is found in the wl500g as seems. The problem is the absence of the sources for the ddns binary, only the script (/init/ddnsclient) available.

Guys, I've found the original code, being used by asus for ddns: http://xzabite.org/dyndnsupdate/ . BTW, Asus have modified the code to read settings from nvram (???). Asus, has violated not only the GPL but also have removed the COPYRIGHT notice:
Copyright (c) 2001 Fredrik "xzabite" Haglund
    xzabite@xzabite.org
They definetly should release the sources, otherwise Fredrik has a chance to get $ from Asus.
If someome has a contact with Asus - please let them know. I think we should start a new thread with the list of copyright violations... I think the same applies to stupid-ftpd.

Would it be possible to compile and place the DDNS client coded by Fredrik, with no modification, on a USB storage device, and execute it automatic via a script with required interval and options? Then the build-in version of the DDNS client of cause has to be disabled.

I am sorry to hear about ASUS and the missing respect for GPL. Btw what email address is useable to contact ASUS on WL500g matters?

At http://www.saugstation.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=16 I found another user (German) that actual got an reply from ASUS on DynDNS abuse matter:

Verfasst am: Mo Dez 29, 2003 2:24 pm Titel: DynDns Problem

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zitat:

    Dear Sir,
    Good day.
Thank you very much for your interest in ASUS WLAN product.
As regards your question, here is our answer.
    1. WL500g update an IP getting from NAT(Not IP to Internet) to DynDNS. Therefore, DDNS is not working properly.
    2. We will consider to add this function on the next firmware release.
We are sorry for any inconvenience. If you have further questions or anything we can help, please feel free to contact us.
