Question How can I log the traffic ?

    Hello,

I`ve bought an Asus WL500g. It works fine. The only thing i miss is to log all WAN traffic. The Reason is that i have a volume based internet connection and so i want to know how much traffic i've used....
Did Soneone know a tool or a configuration hint ?

    thx

Check this reply from Oleg. Stats are available but are cleared during reset...

    Hi,

if you login to your router with telnet, you can use the command ifconfig for generating the stats output. This shows you the traffic for all network devices in the router. The ppp0 device shows your wan traffic, both transmitted and received.

Unfortunately, there seem to be an upperlimit from which the counter
starts from zero again, which makes it worthless to use this as a reliable
mean for measuring your traffic amount.

Actually, there are some linux tools available (ipstat or iptraf). If it would be possible to install one of these tools on the Asus, the functionality would be available. One week ago I already ask if somebody knows how to accomplish that, but I didn't get any reply. May it is not possible due to limited memory at the router.

If you may find a way in the future to log the traffic, please let me know.

    Regards

    Nik

thx for your answers. i will look to find a way for saving logs, so that there will be a possibility to reboot. I`ve also looked at vnstat, that nik describes in the other thread.... i think i have to build it. maybe the other way will be to use my dsl modem to log traffic, but actually i have no plan ;-) ... i think at first i have to install linux at first to one of my computers.
