Thread: WL-500gP & Novatel MC935D: mounting and ejecting its storage

  1. WL-500gP & Novatel MC935D: mounting and ejecting its storage

I would like to use the HSPA modem model Ovation MC935D from Novatel Wireless. It has specific requirement to mount its storage and then eject it to get the proper modem initialized on USB bus. While I can do that on Ubuntu (I manually eject the mounted flash), the WL-500gP with WL500gp-1.9.2.7-rtn-r4051 seem to not see the flash drive and do not mount it, so I do not have anything to unmount.

I tried usb_modeswitch, but I can achive is to detach the storage driver from the device and it does not switch to to new Product ID (0x7001).

    P: Vendor=1410 ProdID=5020 Rev= 0.00
    S: Manufacturer=Novatel Wireless, Inc.
    S: Product=Novatel Wireless HSPA Modem
    S: SerialNumber=354087030265441

    I:* If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=(none)
    E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms
    E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 512 Ivl=0ms

The device identifies in the log this way after it is plugged in:
Jan 1 03:11:46 kernel: usb 1-1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
    Jan 1 03:11:46 kernel: usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
Jan 1 03:11:46 kernel: scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
    Jan 1 03:11:48 kernel: scsi 5:0:0:0: CD-ROM Novatel Mass Storage 2.31 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0

I need any advice how can I do it quickly to get the flash on the modem mounted and ejected, the best would be done automatically.

Otherwise what is the best option to choose as the HSPA modem proven to work with WL-500gP?

It seems storage on your modem is detected like CD-ROM, so you probably just need to load udf.ko module/iso9660.ko to mount it (but it's gonna be read-only I guess..). I don't have such modem, so can't test properly.

Do you see at all in /dev specific device for CD-ROM, i.e. /dev/discs/disc[a,b,c] ? How do you eject it in Ubuntu?

In router I do not see any specific device. Under Ubuntu I did not check which device is mounted - I ejected it by pressing "eject" button in Nautilus present at right side of the filesystem. Then dialog boxes to set up GSM connection appeared and I was able to configure the connection.

The fact that would be readonly is not a problem, I have to be able to unmount and eject it - but it seems that I have to install sdparm not present in Oleg's by default.

I've compiled eject from latest CVS and sdparm for optware, it's attached, try it eject_cvs-1_mipsel.zip or sdparm_1.07-1_mipsel.zip

also from reading here (http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/recipes/3gdongle) you need to load usb_serial driver with appropriate options.
