The adapter is compatible with any computer that runs Windows 2000 or Windows XP and has a free USB 2.0 port; currently, there are no drivers for Linux or Mac OS. Systems using USB 1.1 don't qualify either, since the older standard doesn't offer enough bandwidth for sufficiently high screen refresh rates.

I was already last week looking at it, because here at work are using thin Stations and we were dreaming if it even could be possible to get such a "THIN-CLIENT" to work, since it is very small, has a build in HDD (I'm talking about the WL-HDD that I own) doesn't has any Ventilator etc.

But for this speed you need USB 2.0 and not 1.1 or even less (looking at the speed), and what work the Processor will have iv someone has enough money t try this, the results would be very interresting !

No matter your calculations, the device DOES work in windows...try to read the Tomshardware article.

And since the gx version has USB 2.0 it should work on this one as well !

No matter how hard you wish, I've read Tom's article fully and they report:
- 60 Hz max! This means you're looking at a very unergonomic picture.
- @ 1024*768*16*60 the image is not fluent
- There is no Linux driver and if there was, it will most likely require multiple times the CPU power the WL-500gx can deliver.

And since the gx version has USB 2.0 it should work on this one as well !

Yes, the interface is USB 2.0, but I've never heard anyone say the WL-500gx can saturate 480Mbit/s, and you'll need every bit of those...

Perhaps (big if) the WL-500gx can deliver 320*240*8*60, but I won't believe that until I see it.

@akn99: There are many fanless embedded pc's available with suitable vga outputs to be used as simple thin-clients. I would advise you not to spend time in deploying the WL-HDD for that kind of work.

It was just a small dream which disappeared very quickly, because of the reason, that those SOC's from such small Devices like the ASUS or DLINK ones would never handle the cpu usage without droping the perormance from other functions those Devices have.

Actually, there is a Linux driver for this device, see this site. I wish it could work with 8-bit Atari with the USB Cartridge.

I didn't dare imagine anything more than the console. What I thought of (a little bit off topic) was attaching a usb sip/skype/h323 phone like the K-1000. Unfortunately, not having it, I wasn't able to figure out if its keypad worked like a standard usb keyboard or not. So I thought about attaching a cheap USB soundcard (that I already have) and an USB Numeric keypad. Too bad I don't have the router (yet....maybe...). That reminds me I have one spare Ovislink WMU-9000VPN at work for which there is no real GPL source available yet.

As far as I know, you still need Skype on the computer you attach the USB handset to in order for it to work.

Since there is no mipsel build of Skype (and no sources public) - I am afraid it is a no-go.

Well, since it (and some others) claims to be SIP and H.323 compatible I guess we would just have to find a nice SIP/H.323 console softphone that can be compiled in the firmware. Or maybe not. Let's wait for an expert's opinion. (I don't really know anything about VoIP; just having strange ideas ).

Skype is not SiP or any other well documented protocol, it is 100% proprietary.
