Successfully compiled (?) firmware doesn't work, binary does

    Hello all,

The last days I've been trying to compile custom firmware for my wl500g (rev 2.40), following the instructions from the WIKI 'compilingcustomfirmware' (version 1.9.2.7-4) and Oleg's page.

After some problems (some solved by this great forum!) it now compiles without errors. I get a .trx file of 2.260 kB (make image-WL500g) of 2.264 kB (make install). The binary that I can find from Oleg's page for 1.9.2.7-4 for wl500g is 3.312 kB. This is strange.

When I try to upload Oleg's binary (using the firmware restore tool) everything works like expected. When I try to upload either self compiled images, I don't get any response from the router (tried power-cycle, waiting some time, etc.) After that I can restore the firmware, of course, but this self compiled binary should work, too.

    What can be the problem?

    Best regards,
    Sjoerd

Most likely your firmware does not contain web pages. Be sure to type
    make image-WL500g
    not
    make image-wl500g

    This is case sensitive.

Thanks Oleg for your quick response.

I'm quite sure that I typed image-WL500g, but at the moment I'm trying again (have to compile some things again... trouble, but I just need a little patience).

Still, if I upload my self compiled images, the router doesn't respond on ping or telnet. Is that caused by the missing webpages?

    Interesting,

    make image-wl500g -- gives a .trx of 1.8 MB
    make image-WL500g -- gives a .trx of 2.6 MB

But both have the same symptoms. After flashing the AP with the firmware restoration tool, they don't respond on HTTP, Telnet or ping. Trying to reboot after flashing doesn't help, too.

Are there maybe some compile files/logs that I can send that explain more?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sjoerd

have you ever typed just "make"?

Yes, I did, exactly according to the 'compilingcustomfirmware' WIKI page. I did that (succesfully) exactly once.

EDIT: something (maybe) useful to know: I looked to the wired Ethernet while and after updating the firmware with Ethereal. I see that the AP takes as address 192.168.1.49 while in TFTP mode. When the TFTP transfer is ready, no packets from the AP's MAC address appear again. Nothing.

    Regards,
    Sjoerd

    make image-WL500g output

Maybe this is good to see (the output of make image-WL500g) in the attachments. If anyone needs more info to know what is going on, please let me know.

    It works! (sort of)

I now tried to compile on another computer, and it works. But still, it is strange that it doesn't compile on the first computer. (Compile, I mean, gives a valid image.)

    Regards and thanks for listening,
    Sjoerd

    Compare mipsel-uclibc/target on both PCs.
