Which firmware are you using?
Which filesystem is on the HD?
Have you tried FTP?
I have a WL500W Asus router.
When I connect a WD(Western Digital) USB HD to the router, I can't write to the HD. I connect to the HD using WinSCP with Windows XP. All the folders show r-xr-xr-x
(When I connect the HD direct to a USB port on the pc, then it is OK)
(Have the same problem with Ubuntu 9.10)
Sorry, was even de draad kwijt en toen in het engels gaan schrijven.

NTFS can only be read. Its a proprietary Microsoft product.
ext3 is a good choise for a harddisk for your router.
I use an ext3 HD as a dedicated router-HD, using Olegs firmware.
If you want to switch the HD between Win, Linux and the router, FAT32 is what you need.
FAT32 is old, thus very compatible. But it has some disadvantages: files cant be bigger than 4 GB, and its not a journaling file system.
You can also install an ext2/3 driver under windows so you can read/write to those partitions. (writing is potentially dangerous!)
