Recording sound/phone calls with WL500gp

I want to record my phone calls.

1. I can get a cheap USB sound card for about 2 Euros! (a 3.5mm mic in, + A/D convertor + 3.5mm output socket) like this

2. I can get a telephone recording adaptor lead for a few pounds/euros more...

3. I can plug then all together with a large 3.5mm Jack female to male extension lead

and into my WL500Gp via a USB 2.0 HUB.

My question - Is this possible?
What would I have to do in terms of software on the router?

Sure I can just plug in a recording mp3 player, but then i would have to worry about batteries, turning it on manually, getting to the right mode etc... I thought what better than record via the router and its USB to its networked HDD?

Well, as long as you are able to convert a regular landline to voip it should be possible.
Try to get something like a linksys pap2t or similar and connect it to an ethernet port of your router.
Then install asterisk and some tools from here:

Consider, that recording a phone-call is forbidden by law.

The big advantage is, that you can record any phone call handled by asterisk. A Wl500gP can handle up to 4-5 phone calls simultaneously, depending to the other services handled by router.
And a last hint: At ebay you can get sometimes a fritzbox-fon from AVM pretty cheap (mostly for 9-10 Euro) or other cheap equipment for voip.

Maybe your concept will work too, but it is very hard to get all things together and running.

In any case it needs a lot of time and configurations. I bet, you'll find thousands of config-examples for asterisk and it is easy possible to put everything together.

In case you start the project, be so kind and share your experience with us.....I bet many forum users are able to help you a bit.....

Yes I did know you could record calls with asterisk on the WL500gp. But setting it up is another matter. I am running a lot on my WL500gp here! Slightly worried between the cronjobs and processes there will be no resources left for asterisk.

Luckly, it's entirely legal to record your home phone calls in the UK and the US for your own use, not sure about Europe.

Thats good advice on the VOIP - but I already have a PAP2T-NA connected to 2 handsets to 2 VOIP service providers. The drawback of the PAP2T-NA is that it comes only with FXS ports so it cannot link into the landline. So considered getting a Linksys spa3000 (£25ish on ebay) because that will link into both landline and voip (FXO and FXS ports) and then connect it all up with asterisk. But frankly befuddled by the options - Whats the difference between a Linksys spa3000 and a Spiura spa 3000 etc.. what about the spa 3102. So all needs a bit more research.

But then I thought why bother?
Use a simple USB soundcard with its built in A/D for £2 and plug it into the landline and the WL500gp. Hopefully there will be some linux driver out there for it. Many of these devices seem to work with the Open Sound System (OSS) kernel-level sound card driver.
