Anyone wanting to get IPTV over a wireless connection, here is a compromise workaround. It's not ideal and has limitations but it's better than nothing.
Problem:
- Most wireless equipment from AP and clients are unable to accept and process multicast UDP packets at a fast enough rate causing viewing of IPTV over wireless to be choppy, delayed or simply unplayable.
My Solution:
- Use VLC to re-broadcast the multicast UDP packets as unicast UDP so that wireless clients are able to watch IPTV without glitches.
- This should work with ALL wireless equipment from 11b upwards.
Requirements:
- You are already able to watch IPTV using a PC connected by cabled ethernet and that machine must remained connected via cable.
- Your wireless signal is sufficient to support an IPTV stream. You need around 4-6 mbps.
Pros:
- It works! You can watch IPTV as though you were connected via cabled ethernet.
- No additional software is required. Just VLC.
- No need to transcode the stream, so lower CPU requirements.
- No messing around with router configuration settings so its more user friendly.
Cons:
- See requirements.
- Changing channels is a pain. You need to do it via a browser after enabling the VLC web interface.
- You need to know the IP of the machine you want to stream too.
HowTo (Windows only):
- Firstly you need to get be able to open IPTV directly from within VLC. This is achieved by opening channels using their UDP address as provided by TPG. See here for more details www.tpg.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2194.
- The addresses you need are similar to udp://@233.29.121.2 etc. You can use either the playlist TimMc has provided or open the addresses manually yourself, it's your choice. I will show the manual address way.
- On the cabled machine (server) start VLC and choose
File
Open Network Stream
Select UDP/RTP Multicast
Type in the IP of the channel you want. Eg 233.29.121.2
Tick Stream/Save.
Click Settings
Tick UDP
In the address field, type in the IP of wireless machine. Eg 192.168.1.X
Click OK
And Again OK
- VLC should now be broadcasting the IPTV to your wireless machine. To confirm, check:
View
Stream and Media Info
Click the Statistics tab
Streaming box is showing packets being sent
- Goto your wireless machine (client) and start VLC. Choose File, Open Network Stream, leave everything as default and Click OK.
- If everything worked, your wireless machine should now be playing the IPTV stream as though it was connected to your router via cabled ethernet.
Tips/Troubleshooting:
- To find the IP of your wireless machine, use the IPCONFIG command on the box itself.
- If you want to watch the IPTV on the server whilst streaming, simply tick the Play Locally in the stream settings.
- You can send IPTV to multiple machines wirelessly simulatenously by using multiple unicast UDP addresses. Obviously they will all display the same channel. I haven't tried this yet, but it doesn't seem too difficult.
In my case, I was able to watch IPTV on my laptop wirelessly and was quite happy with the resulting quality. I haven't had a chance to play with the web interface for changing channels as yet. Next on my list is to watch IPTV wirelessly on my xbox using XBMC, connected via 2 routers and WDS.
