Unhappy wl-500g help needed before it kills me.

    Hi all.

This is my first post on these here boards.
I hope to have lots of fun from here on in.

Any way back to my question.

Im new to this router and im stuck and can not progress till i can find an answer.

I got a wl-500g about three weeks ago and want to use the ftp feature for getting drivers and that remotely.

I have been trying to sort this for over 2 weeks but no luck as yet.
ive been using filezilla as a way to connect from my home pc to the usb drive with the files on.

But when i try to connect from any other pc not in my home then filezilla says this to me which im now stumped if i can sort without asking for help first.

    filezilla say this.

Status: Connecting to REMOVED FOR SECURITY REASONS ...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response: 220 Welcome to FTP server.
    Command: USER wraith36
Response: 331 Password required for user wraith36.
    Command: PASS ********
Response: 230 User wraith36 logged in.
    Command: SYST
Response: 215 UNIX Type: L8 (Linux).
    Command: FEAT
    Response: 503 Command not understood.
    Status: Connected
    Status: Retrieving directory listing...
    Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is current directory.
    Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Type set to I.
    Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,1,4,4)
Status: Server sent passive reply with unroutable address. Passive mode failed.
    Command: PORT 192,168,0,3,10,190
    Response: 200 PORT command successful.
    Command: LIST
    Response: 501 Error in parameters.
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

In my drive i have 2 folders named ftp_pub and ftp_pvt and have put files in both as a way to view inside the folder on connecting to it which works fine from my home pc just not from the works pc i use to test with.
    Am i missing something here.

I have had a good look round the boards for what the issue may be but yet to find something along the same lines.

I dont even know if im even able to do what im after which is use my drive for ftp use out side my own home.
Im using oleg's firmware which is as up to date as i can get them.

If you can help in any way please do before ive pulled my hair out.
Sorry my first post is me needing help straight away.

Thanks for any help forth coming.

If you need any other info please ask away.

    weird.

This is what my asus does (when logged on from lan or via vpn):

    Code:
    ~$ ftp asus
    Connected to asus.munal.nl.
    220 (vsFTPd 2.0.6)
    Name (asus:wiz):
    331 Please specify the password.
    Password:
    230 Login successful.
    Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.

Commands may be abbreviated. Commands are:

    ! debug mdir qc send
    $		dir		mget		sendport	site
    account disconnect	mkdir put size
    append exit mls pwd status
    ascii form mode quit struct
    bell get modtime quote system
    binary glob mput recv sunique
    bye hash newer reget tenex
    case help nmap rstatus tick

    chmod lcd open reset user

What is the version of software that runs in your box? Judging by the commands you supplied it seems there's no vsftp server running on your box, so I wonder what version firmware you have running.

Also, what is configured for FTP access from WAN?

    cheers,

    Wiz

well, if I understand you correctly you want to access your disk with ftp from outside your network right?

if so, go to the configuration website of your router, http://your_router_ip and logon as admin. Do this from a workstation on the lan side of the network.

Select the Tab Usb application, and then ftp server.

There you can configure the ftp server:

Mine is only from the lan accessable, if you select that item and make it yes, it should be accessable from the internet. If you change a setting, the router will have to reboot in order to set it, after the boot it should work.

Keep in mind that your ftp server will NOT be accessable from the internet on 192.168.x.y, you have to use your public IP address from the worldwide web in order to get to your ftp server.

    hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Wiz

    Hi,

i am not absolutely shure, but this
    Code:
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,1,1,4,4)
Status: Server sent passive reply with unroutable address. Passive mode failed.
    Command: PORT 192,168,0,3,10,190
    Response: 200 PORT command successful.
    Command: LIST
    Response: 501 Error in parameters.
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing
looks like your router gives the wrong (internal) IP to your client.
That is the reason why it works internal and not external.

Maybe this is something in the config of the ftp server.
Could you post the settings of the ftp server?

I still think it is strange. In my screen I have the option enable: yes, no yes-lan only.

Did you have a look at the firewall settings?

I am not sure the ftp server will be accessable from the www by default. What dns name or ip address did you use when at the office when you tried?

Are you sure you can access ftp servers from work network (no firewall / proxy blocking you)?

Do you actually have a fixed ip address? As I have seen it in the places I have been when in the UK the ipaddresses were not fixed, so it will be kind of tricky to figure that out as well.

Here you can check your current IP address on the www:

    Your IP address is: 82.42.234.247

this is not ment to be a static ip address but while on a router it never seems to change so that would be hard to answer 100%.

i can gain access from my home pc using filezilla which lets me add files and delete if needed.
using 192.168.1.1:21 and username and password which works.

but when i try from my computer at work i cant get in using the ip above.
i try to gain entry using this ftp://wraith36@82.42.234.247:21 but cant list anything in the drive.

    firewall in router is on.

i have also tryed using our game server in kent to gain access yet i cant with that either.
the drive was on ntfs but ive formated it to fat32 and still the same thing.

    im still open to ideas.

and whats this software people are running from there drives.
i have no software in my drive only things i want to share or get access to if needed.

and this is a media drive im using which can be plugged into a tv to view movies or play music.
if it were a usb brive then it may work but i dought it realy.

    this is the router wl-500g

ive added that because when i googled the router it was showing a different model to this.

wiz is the router above the one you have used for the usb picture you posted early.
if so what firmware is that running.

and you question to oleg's firmware.
i used the firmware update link at the top of the forums.
i hope thats oleg's drivers or ill look a right fool.

and thanks for your time on this wiz.
    its much appreciated.

Yeah, that's the one I have here too. On the back 1 parallel port, and 1 usb port and 1 wan port and 4 lan ports.

I just tried to ftp that ip address from here, I do not get an answer.

If you can access the drive through ftp on the lan side, your drive is connected properly and works fine.

Thing that puzzles me is that you do not have the option in the USB FTP config to switch the ftp server on from the wan side or only on the Lan side.

mine says in the upgrade field:
    product ID : WL500
    firmware version: 1.9.2.7
    firmware release: 1.9.2.7-9.2.5

Seems it is different to what you have. I used to have a folder on my desktop with the various versions, but it seems I have cleaned it.

I think mine is this one:

    WL500g-1.9.2.7-9.zip

Can you confirm this version is the one you flashed in yours?

Hmmz, yours seem to be 1.9.2.7-7. Maybe it is an idea to download above and flash that one and see if that helps?

    cheers,

    Wiz
