there are two main pieces of software which run on the router: lcd4linux and lcdproc. The first one is available in .ipk-s, the second one is easily compilable. See their web-sites which devices are supported. Personally I prefer lcdproc.
After some 1.5 years experience of usage I'd say that its most useful feature is the full screen clock. It's quite fancy to have a precise clock which is synchronized every two hours
P.S. Search the forum. There were several reports of success of this kind.
thanks
already a number of successful implementation from Google

Hi,
an WL500g has an parallel port, so an display with an HD44780 controller can easily be hooked up to the device.
as for the premium. it doesn't have an parallel port, at least not externally, perhaps internally.
search this board for 'HD44780' it might give you some info.

It can be used to monitor the status of the router such as CPU load, amount of traffic on WAN port, etc. It can be also used to steer functionalities of the router such activate/deactivate wireless, block WAN port, etc via the virtual keyboard of the screen, e.g. key "W" to activate/deactivate wireless (just as an example!). The General Purpose Outputs (see PalmOrb FAQ) can be used to indicate or flag activities or abnormal situations on the router, e.g. disk full.
