    WL-700gE as a secure repeater?

    Hi,

I have a WL-700gE, and I would like to use it a wireless HD. Due to certain restrictions, I cannot use it as my router. I need to connect it to my other wireless network (wirelessly, not via the RJ connectors!), and get access to its drive (and preferrably also to an externally connected USB drive).

In other words, it needs to be a repeater. I know there is discussion around here that it CAN be done, but I could not find any discussion about connecting it to a secured network (WEP, WPA or otherwise).

Furthermore, I have no experience with unix, but I do believe I could do it with some (or a lot) of effort. However, before I do put this effort, I would like to check whether it has any use, as it might not be possible anyway.

    Could you please advise?

In Short what I need to know is:
Can the WL-700gE connect to an existing secured network (call it network A) wirelessly and allow the hard drive (and a USB drive connected to it) to be used as NAS by the computers on network A?

If so, is there a (beginner's) guide to show me how to do it?

The WL700gE has two modes, gateway and access point (AP) mode. I believe AP mode is what you want.

Both modes are available with either the stock firmware or my custom firmware.

    Thanks for the reply,

If I understand correctly, AP is only for turning the router into a switch.

It might work if you connect the (now) AP to a network by wire, but it will not be able to connect wirelessly, which is what I need.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think what you want isn't possible with the asus firmware.
Openwrt can be youre friend in this situation. I haven't tried it myself but you can configure youre wifi the way you like it, but it has to be done in config files so some knowlidge of unix is needed to accomplish this

    Help?

I did manage to find this,

But it's not really a beginner's guide. How do I compile the firmware?
