WL-HDD files modifications & (linux) rights?

I am a little disturbed by something tied to the file rights on WL-HDD embedded linux... I am running JockyW 1.1.2.8 custom firmware, but this is the same with the official Asus one. Here is the issue:

1/ create a toto.xls on your PC
2/ copy toto.xls to WL-HDD
3/ using telnet, you see that toto.xls is owned by nobody/nobody with 766 (rwxrw-rw-)
4/ open toto.xls from the WL-HDD using your PC and type anything
5/ try to save... and see that you can't since the file cannot be overwritten: you have to save as a new file!

Do you have the same issue? How to deal with that?

I think Excel (and other office programs) also require erase permissions for saving. You may need to change your directory permissions.

Another option you may try is to have Excel save the .tmp file in a different (local Windows) directory or don't use AutoRecovery

Try

ls -l

when editing the Excel file to see what's happening in the directory.

Well... it's working now...

The directory that hosts the Excel file has rwxrwxrwx rights.
The Excel file is owned by nobody/nobody and has rwxrw-rw- rights.
When the Excel file is opened, no new file is created on the WL-HDD (/tmp may be involved, so its on my PC), but when I try to save the file into the WL-HDD, I got the message that the "file may have been modified by another user since last save" and I have 2 options "save as copy, or remplace modifications". Remplace modifications is working now... Well, must try again later...

So your PC, where you probably use another username, thinks user "nobody" is editing the file. Seems to me this is a (Samba) configuration issue.

As you can see in the old thread: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=953 I also (still) have
the same problem. Because of that problem I'm using the WL-HDD only as back-up storage device. If someone can tell me how to use Win XP Pro/Office files properly with the WL-HDD I would be very gratefull.

Well, it's working properly now. I cant remember what I did (I switched back from JockyW to the Asus official firmware then again to JockyW).

What I see now, is that Excel is not working the same the other programs do. Opening an Excel file from the WL-HDD, then saving the updates, Excel asks wether you'd like to override the modifications or create a new file. Using Word, you dont even bother and save the file with a charm!

Well, I really enjoy the WL-HDD and I often use/write files directly from the remote disk. Great product indeed!
