data transfer speed

Hi, I have my asus 160 GB wl-700ge connected to my windows vista computer via ethernet. I am able to map my asus drive onto the My Computer. However, whenever I transfer files from my computer hard drive to the asus drive (copy and paste or cut and paste), the transfer speed is merely a little less than
4MBps.. that seems pretty low.. can anyone tell me what measures I can take to fix this problem??

guys.. please let me know if this is expected speed or if the data transfer speed of 3-4 MBPS is less than what it should... how much speed should I be getting when transferring media files etc. from windows to the router drive??

Hi, thanks.. but I don't understand russian.. also, I am talking about the hard drive built into the router.. I am getting a max of 4.8 MBps for data transferred from computer to the router. Is this normal? or am I supposed to get more? heck, I get about 20 MBps when I transfer files to my IPOD!!

Yes, it is normal. Speed of my WL700ge is max. 5.1 MBps.

If you're running the firmware as it comes directly from Asus, your transfer speeds will be degraded because the CPU is 100% loaded due to a setup bug when the router boots.

If you're courageous, you can improve the speed by installing the custom firmware and insuring you have the following line in your rc.local:

# Fix the gpio load problem
echo "interrupt=no" > /proc/miscio/power_enable_config

Alternatively, you could try opening up the telnet hole on the stock firmware (via the web server) and try it from the command line. It'll work until the router reboots.

I still get the same slow transfer speed as i used to since 1.0.4.6

5 to 6MB per sec. from network to hdd, really bad when you change to a bigger hdd and have to fill it up :S

Would there be scope to fine tuning the samba setup defined by the asus firmware? I suppose you need to be an expert on Samba to do this.

This is a very good results, i think. My speed is 3-4 mB/s on Kamikaze 7.09 firmware. Can you post your smb.conf file?

i have no idea where to get the smb.conf file.
i just changed the 160 stock drive to a 250gb very hot maxtor and put the kf 1.0.7.8, a fresh xp sp1 install, nothing more.

Still very slow compaired to the 9-10 MBps that we get from 100 Mbps networks...
