after i've switched on the USB printer but...
nothing special, i'm using a 8.192Mbit cable connection and squeeze out the full speed if the server supports this data rate (there are many but some are limited).
i remember an error very similar to yours

i've read somewhere that openwrt on the Asus WL700g had big problems with samba serving over WLAN,

this is interesting, since i've in mind that OpenWrt is "experimental" on the WL700g, hence a few questions ...
which version of OpenWrt are you running on your WL700g ? (some info/help/install...
maybe because typical Windozers do not know how to use ftp ?
i worked around this issue by commenting out the command in
/opt/lib/ipkg/info/adduser.postinst

you can't from wan,
if you want access from wan you've to go with ftp
i'm using vsftp version 2.0.5 from the unslug/optware ipk packages.
with this version you can define users and chroot them...
yes i did install syslog-ng and fail2ban in order to be able to detect attacks
and banning attacking ip-addresses.
for me this works with dropbear and vsftpd
i'm using this configuration:
...
there are a few packages which don't install clean with using ipkg
e.g. fail2ban, syslog-ng and adduser (as far as i've tried till now)
the adduser tool basically works but i had to comment out...
i've installed successfully and use the package esmtp
it is not an email (or smtp) server but it is a smtp relay client.
with esmtp you can send mails using your already existing email account with...
i guess, the syntax error is here,
try to comment this line out or set it as described.
did you enable CIFS access ( in general and for MYSHARE1 ) ?
that's what's needed for networking with Windoze XP.
@medsource
thanks again for your excellent documentation,
yesterday i had some time to play with and i got fail2ban installed and working too.
first i tried it with your setup, which works...
first i did create a user "guest" with the WEB-configuration tool and
created also a new guest-folder where the guest has full access.
then the asus-SMB knows what folder to give free if any...
1. KEEP USING UBSA
its more work to adjust the permissions but it's a lot more safe than using PBSA !
2. Your guest file-access problem:
you need to adjust the permissions of the shared files,...
well done, thanks a lot, very useful informations.

looking politely forward ...
just a small reminder to what i requested a few times already ...
anyhow, i made some progress in the meanwhile

and precise instructions, what has to be changed where,

hi medsource
