If it is a 2.6 kernel, then no problem.

Nope, I think your data is gone.
"Flashing" the Asus/kfurge firmware consists of two steps. The first part puts the kernel in flash. The second writes the root filesystem to two small...

If you never had a previous installation, you can safely ignore this entire section.

Sierra Wireless, the chipset manufacturer in most of these 3G/Edge USB dongles, does not have a driver for the 2.4 kernel. They only support 2.6.
It's unfortunate, but I'm pretty sure you'll have...
I wouldn't. Solid state drives can only execute a finite number of write cycles. The router uses the HDD for swap and may hit this limit rather quickly.
A notebook HDD is probably a good option...
You can install the "industrial strength" tar as an ipkg package.

Regarding...
#6, Yes vi is included in /opt/bin.
#7/#8, We're saying the same thing... I assumed everyone would know that adding packages was a "root" level operation.
The reason sudo...
I'll throw in my 0.02...
Regarding:
#6. Real men use vi (which is included). ;-)
#7/8. I'm not sure of the value of this step... I added the admin account just to provide a consistent...
How about this... Check out the latest revision of

which now points you to the FAQ.
FWIW, The FAQ already had this in it: Q. I've really...
Dude, life's too short to worry about things like this!

To make users stick you need to be in USBA mode. In this mode, the passwd file is stored on the HDD (/etc/passwd-> /tmp/passwd -> /shares/MYVOLUME1/__pdc/passwd).
In PBSA, /tmp/passwd is...
Wow, never seen this before. Press and hold the resessed reset button to force a reset to factory defaults and be prepared to reconfigure everything.
- K.C.
Yep. I've experienced this exact problem on at least two occasions.
To fix it, you need to scrub out at least everything in /shares/MYVOLUME1/__pdc while in PBSA mode. Reboot the router,...
Make sure you're using a modified version of the rc.local that came with the 1078 firmware image. If you're using your 1046 rc.local than the hooks won't be present to start mldonkey.

Yes. Reflashing the router will cause it to reconfigure and rewrite the HDD contents. To be sure, though, wipe the first 100Mbytes or so with "dd" before sticking it back into the router.

Things like this live in nvram. Use the nvram command to manually scrub them out. Be careful, though. This is kinda like messing around with the windows registry.
Make sure to follow up your...
Not 101%, but I've hit the reset button a number of times during development of my firmware image and have never experienced a HDD erasure. I have had it come back up speaking Chinese to me though....
Sorry, add what? I couldn't follow.

Follow the directions here:
http://wl700g.homelinux.net/drupal/?q=node/187
You're missing the the step where you copy the /opt directory from flash to the HDD.

It's possible, but I suspect it would require substantial hacking to the Asus distribution. More time than I'm willing to invest.

I don't have any recommendations since I don't have a VoIP phone... However, please update us all if you find a solution.

Hitting the power button executes /sbin/miscio_input_change. I'm not sure if executing the "shutdown" command does too. In my latest builds, I've replaced Asus symlink with a script that hooks in...
Good to hear.

There's lots of potential reasons. Some common ones are:
1) Edited on a windows machine
2) Contains a syntax error
3) Is not set as executable
4) Does not have a valid shell
