I think shutting down is a problem. If you pull out the disc that has a ext3 partition, it will complain with e2fsck that the disc was not properly unmounted.

umount /dev/discs/disc0/part1...

I have ext3 partition on usb2 hdd and only get 900 kbyte/s on a large copy from PC to hdd. It takes ages to copy

or go to modem with telnet or ssh
