the gx is short hand for "WL-500g deluxe" which has two USB 2.0 ports and burst mode as opposed to one USB 1.1 and one parallel ports. The g is brown/beige, the gx is grey/silver.

I also had this problem, and disabled my wireless and bluetooth NIC devices and set a static IP and I was back in business.
