Hello,
I'm used to live in Europe, and i'm actually in USA for my work. Does anyone knows that if i buy ASUS WL-500g in USA, the power supply is able to zork zith 220v in Europe then?
There is a sign on the power supply: INPUT 100-240V 50/60Hz, therefore just the plug is different. But I bet you'll get a european/US converter-plug @ radio shack or (larger) similar store for a couple $.
Or you can get it here in Europe, several times I bought some in Europe and US.
Well, I don't live in States now, however, my experience is that 90% of the electronic stuff sold there is usually 110V only. So, check carefully before you buy.
al37919, you confirm my fears. So i ask to american users of this router, if their power supply is only at 110v or 110/220v (i already have a converter).
My power source is defective. I found another power source (5Volts 3Amps) but what kind of connector do I need? The alternative power source has a 2.1/5.5mm power connector, and I don't know if it fits.
I know I can buy another connector and replace the default one, but I'm not good at soldering things.
Just cut off the connector from the old power supply and adjust it on the new one while preserving the color code. But if you want to be 100% sure for the polarization use a multimeter to determine the positive and negative wires.
It's not absolutely necessary to use soldering iron , you can just twist the wires and isolate them with heat shrinking tubes.
Another way is to change the entire cable from inside the PSU with the cable from the old PSU. But here you'll need some soldering skills (it's not that hard ;)).
Hope it helps.
Citro, if this helps somewhat ... the plug size is exactly the same as the one that Lacie use for their external drive (unfortunately theirs use 12V so can't use that). The adapter for the WL500GP is center positive by the way.
Oh and do you mind sharing the info where you get your replacement adapter? Mine is also toast, and I still am having trouble finding the replacement.
There seems to be an influx of users with broken power supplies these days. I'm one of them. The only replacement power supply I found locally set me back ~$55 and didn't include a plug with the correct size. I'll probably have to do some soldering to make it work, but I still haven't given up trying to get a replacement from Asus. Here's the important parts of my communication with them:

sorry this shops is only in my coutry and do not ship outside!!!
my original power source isn't dead, i buy new one because my external 2.5 USB hardrive not work correctly with 2.5A with wifi on.
Or you could harvest a power supply from an old computer. and spend the money on a multimeter, if you don't already have it.

(actually, I didn't use this guide, I only connected the green wire on the ATX connection to a black wire (gnd). You have to have some kind of load connected to the psu so start with an old hard drive and see if it spins up. The first I tried didn't accept it that way, the second one did.)
This provides more than enough current for the asus, plus you have an option of other voltages to power other devices. And also. they are much more power-efficient than those single ac/dc adapters
I did this last week, 'converted' an old pc-power supply, now running the asus on it without a problem.
I also converted some other devices which were within reach of this old pc-psu.
- computer switch, runs of 12v
- corldess phone base unit, runs of 5v
- ventilation system for my hobby room, runs of 12v.
- I already mentioned the asus.
So now I have a nice collection of 4 ad/dc adapters, replaced by one effecient power supply.
(if you don't use the adapters, cut of the connectors to connect to and from the psu and the unit you want to power.)
things I'll have to convert, but I hadn't had the time yet.
- small speaker system for 2nd computer in hobby-room, runs of 12v
- docking-station for laptop, run of 12v
the power supply is running now for almost a week, and it is cool and quiet (temperature controlled fan inside)....and efficient. (i measure, i know)
...every house should have efficient 12v/5v lines next to 220v, instead of dozens of ac/dc adapters for all kinds of equipment....

Sadly, Asus isn't helpful at all. Given the following specs of WL-500gP's power supply, a direct and inexpensive replacement is not easy to find, but may be possible.
- Output: 5V 2.5A (according to its label)
- DC Plug: Center +; L 10mm, OD 5mm, ID 2mm (basing on my unscientific measurement, please correct me as needed)
- Buffalo WHR-HP-G54's power supply can be used. It is almost the same as WL-500gP's, except for 5V, 2.6A. The larger amp, the better. But, not sure it's sold separately.
- I notice some folks here used the power adapter for D-Link routers. There are some sold on eBay. Watch out for the plug's dimensions.
- I personally want to get a 5V, 4A adapter (almost like gouryella's finding), with the fitting dimensions for the plug. Anything out there?
Yes, that's definitely an option.
Yet, another option, Velleman PSSMV7U may readily supply 5V 4A power to WL-500gP, albeit expensive (> $35).
You should easily be able to find an appropriate power supply on Ebay. Some come with multi plugs, one of which will probably fit the Asus. Otherwise just cut and solder your old plug
I also use an old power supply, as the previous poster (good post Raas. I'm still using your Headstart 2. Going great). Found a suitable plug in my bits bin. The Asus plugs are nothing special.
Some people I know use an 6v or 12v SLA battery on trickle charge. You can use this to step down to 5 or 9 v for all your gear.

I get some of my odds and ends from http://www.jaycar.com.au/printed.asp as there is a store down the road. They do mail order. Ebay from a Hong Kong supplier is probably cheaper.
You have a lot of options. Forget getting the plugpack from Asus
Think the DC adapter for my 2.5 year old WL-500g just died too. I went to the local computer store and bought a generic switching supply that can output 2500 mA at 5 V.
It seems to work fine except when turning on, the LED on the adapter will flicker on and off, along with the LEDs on the router. Since there's no power switch on the router, I will have to plug out the power jack, wait for the DC adapter LED to hold steady, then plug it into the router.
My guess is maybe the inferior switching power supply isn't giving out enough voltage/current at the start? Anyone has this issue and solved it?
Same issue here. 10v 1200uF capacitor corrupted in the power supply. Changed with a 25v 1200uF capacitor (20 cents). Also I made some little holes in the box before closing with glue.
Works!

Just had the power supply on my 1.5 year old wl500g premium go. Got hpome from work and noticed I could not access the HDD attached to my router and WLAN was not working, but could still get online through wired connection. When I tried power cycling the router, the LAN LEDs and power LEDs were alternating (all 5 LAN lights would come on then go off, then power LED would come on and go off). Reset button had no effect. I found this post and suspected the problem might be with my power supply. I went through my parts bin and found the power supply from on old D-Link 5 port switch that was rated for 5VDC @ 2.4A, and the tip and polarity matched the Asus one. Plugged in the router with this power supply and router powered up and worked perfectly. So, anyone having a hard time find a power supply it looks like D-Link power supplies make good replacements.
I fixed mine replacing the defective 1200uF capacitor, in the meantime I ordered from a chinese eBay seller (just_for_survive) a D-Link 5V/3A power supply.
This works perfectly on our Asus router.
10US$ including shipping fares.
I have experienced problems similar to Mtmsol's: After having worked perfectly (running Tomato firmware) for more than a year, my Asus WL-500g Premium just stopped working one day. When power supply is plugged in, all five lights (LAN+WAN) give a steady glow.
I bought this generic PSU, but when I plug it in, LAN+WAN lights are flashing quickly, and the router appears not to be working at all.
Would this imply that something (capacitors?) is broken inside the router?
maybe a stupid question...
Did you check the polarity?
Well, the symptoms are the same as other people have reported here. But other than that, the only device I have with which to check the PSU is the Asus router, so I can't really determine whether it's the router or the PSU that is broken.
Ehm, no. How do I check the polarity?Quote:

On most universal power supplies you can reverse the connector.
See this picture:

You will find this picture on the asus as well as on your power supply. Be sure that they match on both devices.
Hi
A lot of power supplys damaged around my Asus box (1 router psu, 2 pcs. of cheap-chinese-hdd-psu s).
Lastly i decided to use old atx psu to maintain hdd power, but did not realized that atx psu can be used as power suply for router, hdd, and manu more simulatously. :D
I have only a question: on my atx psu written that +5V line is 15 Amps. Is this is not too high value for WL-500gP router? Can it handle it? I don't want to damage my box.
Greets!
ATX power supply, green and black (ground) pin must be connected through for power on.
Amps not problem, but some sources (older atx) may require some load.
http://www.smps.us/atx-connector-20-24pin.jpeg
Using ATX power without switching on:
take a look on atx label - stand by power +5VSB if have 2.5A (2A without USB hard drive)
http://www.cdr.cz/picture_/36599/small
connect router on purple and black cable, ... wow it runs without fan...(using only stand-by power for wol features etc.)
I bought above mentioned power supply from gme in Brno but it does not work at all with my asus wl500gp, not even when nothing is connected to the router (no usb stuff) - it just lights all leds and keeps them on infinitely, does not continue with boot.
It seems to me that this power supply is a Chinese crap - when I tried to short cut the power supply with 10 ohms resitor, I measured only 3.5V voltage on it, that means it delivered only 3.5V with 350mA!
I can't imagine how this power supply can work with your router?
Or is just the piece I bought yesterday defective?
If nothing is connected to the power supply, I can measure 5.2V voltage, so it's strange - how can they declare it to provide 5V/4.5A when it delivers only 3.5V with 350mA?
I am going to return it today, but I do not see a better alternative in the GM shop unfortunately.
I wanted to replace the original power supply with more powerful one in order to be able to run 2.5" hardisk with the router, but it seems I have a bad luck:-(
So I returned the crappy power supply and got a better one, which has 5V/4A label and it works perfectly - it's this one, strange I could not see it in the list of power supplies:
http://www.gme.cz/cz/index.php?product=751-545
I can now run asus router with seagate 2.5" 250GB harddisk connected, even two additional usb sticks and aver usb dvb-t tuner, all at the same time, running without problem even when wifi is on (having two additional usb ports mod and 128MB ram upgrade mod).
I have the same problem. I think the power supply is broken. Thank you for all the information. I will source a similar one in HK. See if it works.
Okay, I don't know why it didn't work the last time I tried, but I can now confirm that the generic PSU I mentioned in my previous post works, and my Asus has returned from the dead.
@tungtung: I am sorry for the (VERY) delayed answer.
This is the product link:
http://conexelectronic.ro/produs.php?id=122402
The price is 15EURO.
Hope this helps.
maybe you just need to get a new capacitor.. there is a thread somewhere about this
does anyone know if the d-links power supply is a reliable replacement, does it last a long time or do you still have to change them after a while? also I stop by an electronic shop and the guy told me for a router you need a Switch mode power supply aka SMPS, he said a router needs a constant voltage so to be sure you need an SMPS power adapter, I was also wondering does the number of Watts matter?
My 2cents: my WL-500gP started to become quite unstable just hanging or having spontaneous re-starts, specially when connecting the printer or an USB pendrive to the router. At a given moment the router became unresponsive. All this within a two month time.
The output voltage given by the PSU was 5volts but when connecting it to the router the voltage dropped to 2volts. That showed the problem was most likely within the PSU. I opened the PSU with a Dremel tool to find out that one of the capacitors was swollen. I got a replacement from a old mother board I had around. Problem fixed!
The title is pretty self explanatory but to elaborate, when i plug in my router (tried with two powersupplies [including the original]), none of the lights turn on. Does anyone have any idea why that is? I've been searching online forever but it doesn't seem like anyone has had this problem before.
Just a bit of background: this router use to be my regular that I used on a daily basis but I got a new one. Now because I want to use the USBs, I tried firing it up again and I was going to use both routers but it just wouldn't turn on.
Any help would be much appreciated
Suppose your original powersupply died and the other power supply doesn't meet the specifications or is dead as well.
Otherwise you need to inspect your router for any blown capacitors or the like.
Can you post info about the powersupplies you used?
Possible stupid question:
Have you tried another power outlet?
Currently the power supply i am using is an AC-DC Adapter, that has
INPUT:220-230V - 50Hz 0.2A
OUTPUT: 12V - 1.0A
I have tried other power supplies
I also have a feeling, it's a problem within the Router but I can't be 100% sure.
The powersupply should deliver 5V and at least 2.5A.
You possibly damaged your router by using a 12V power supply.
You can read it on the sticker on the bottom of your router.
Is there any way I can open it up and fix it?
If I were to do this would I be looking out for?
That's hard to say...
If you have the possibility try a good powersupply first. you might be lucky.
Otherwise you have to open the asus router. If you remove the rubber feet you probably find screws below them...
Look for any damages. The only components you might be able to replace are domed capacitors (if any)
Anyone here knows if the Asus WL-500W (about same as gP V2, but with 802.11n) would be shipped from the factory with only a 2 Amperes power supply? I bought a used one which came with a only 2A power supply, is it possible that it has been changed? A WL-500gP V2 which i bougt as new came with a 2.5A power supply.
Wouldn't 5V 2A be too little, as the bottom sticker says 5V 2.5-3A?
