I have no dropouts moor after installing the RT-N16_9.9.4.75.trx beta firmware. :D
Oleg FW soon?

Is it possible to use the JTAG VCC and GND pins to power a small fan? What is the voltage on it? 3.3v? It might not be too loud...
I'm planning to buy a kit to coold the unit down...
http://www.pcfactory.ro/images/produ.../ak-vcx-01.jpg
I completely agree with that...
routers like these should be maintenance free, you don't want to be cleaning dust inside it because of some fan spinning 24/7.
Perhaps you can make it useful when you put a thermo switch between it, so the fan will only run when the temperature is like... 45 degrees C
The stock temperatures measured by hggomes are about the best operating temperatures for routers like these:)
Well, to be onest, with the original firmware, those routers are far from being maintenance - free... :)
The idea of using a fan came when I've searched for suitable heatsinks, and couldn't find anything good, except that kit which I've already ordered...
As soon as it arrives I will test to see if it's the fan will make too much noise at 3.3v, as it is designed to work at 12v.

Back on topic, Oleg's firmware seems to be almost ready, looking at the google code page...
I've tested today the Tomato FW and the USB transfers are a little disapointed/weird but i think that justify the name BETA ;)
FTP transfers start on 6MB/s for a few seconds, then 2-3mb/s, sometime later 6mb/s again...
Let's wait for Oleg ;)
PS: I was hoping more from such hardware "improvements" WL500GP/W => RT-N16, it's better of course but i think it has "only" the double of power ;)
I have the proof of that when i use SSL/TLS encryption, it doens't have enough processor power :(
I will try to overclock to 533MHZ (BCM4718 Announced Speed), and compare the results/improvements.
Anyone here, in English part of the forum, testing new beta of Oleg for RT-N16? As discussed in Russian forum http://www.wl500g.info/showthread.ph...ge=57&p=180330 and forward. Actually already second beta this week.
I am running DD-WRT for now, but looking forward for stable Oleg (I like it more).
P
My bad... just did it few minutes after the post. My russian is far worse than I thought... P
Not a very clean job, but now it's ready for overclocking...

Your router will get a cold dude ;)
A little update on he cooling side... Since on the first try, the 40mm fan mounted on the cpu heatsink was a little bit noisy at night (the router is placed in a bedroom) because the fan was very close to the top cover of the case, I decided to cut a hole in it, changed the fan to a bigger one (50mm) and also reduced the rpm by using two 10 Ohm 3W resistors. In addition, I've covered all the top and side air holes, so now there is a good air flow on both top and bottom sides of the board.

 In that case i would prefer using the router without the top, intead creating holes on it. It would be more fresh, less noise / consumption / time ...
That´s what we call in my country "xuning" :D, thanks anyway for sharing.
PS: Warranty void, even with a new top i doubt they RMA the unit. And... you forgot to add another heatsink to the right side of the black one, LOL ;)
The warranty is bulshit anyway... And if something goes wrong, even if you haven't opened the case, and it's brand new, and you have flashed a 3rd party firmware, it might be impossible to flash the original firmware into a dead router before you RMA the unit...
I don't worry about warranty, and onestly, having seen what temperatures do the chips reach in the standard configuration, compared to what I have now, I seriously think that my unit is far more reliable than a brand new one...
I've read the temperatures you measured, but on my unit, before modding, when transferring data between WLAN, LAN and USB attached storage, temperatures were far higher, as confirmed by other owners on different forums...
It's a little different a router with a 3rd party installed and router with wires, holes and others "stuff" don't you think? My old WL500GP was changed with a 3rd party fw for a new one, i don't think they will check or consider that. But i'm sure such "tweeking" like yours would be a refused RMA...
Temperatures, well that depends on the temperature outside the router too, im sure in the summer (30-35º outside | 24-27º inside) would be different, i measured in the winter (2-10º outside | 18-22º inside)... But anyway it depends on the headsink you have installed, have you checked my heatsink compared to yours? It's almost the triple ;)
PS: Show me your measures / other forums. I going to measure again tomorrow but with conditioner air at maximum of 32º (inside) and we will see...
Mate, I was talking about an original unit, without heatsink on ethernet or RAM... And again, I don't see the point in repeating the fact that I lost the warranty... I KNEW that before I started modding the unit... And, in the end, it's not the warranty for a 30.000 euros car, it's just a 100 $ router...
In that case, good holes ;) But it was not a critic, my WL500GP was worst than yours (wires, memory mod,jtag,serial,4xusb mod) and i was not worried with warranty too, but what i ment was that maybe a little unnecessary to make the hole / cooler, you could take the top instead, my opinion of course... I tell you this because i hate coolers (noise, dust, consumption), i've got a EPI I7-640UM (Dual 1.20GHZ) and a C2D-P9500 (Dual 2.5GHZ) "routers" without coolers (full passive cooling) machines that copy 125mb/s in the network, so i don't think RT-N16 needs one...
Here are the results after 2H working with WAN/LAN/WLAN/USB and forced room temperature at 32º.
STOCK COOLER: 44-45ºC
NEW COOLER: 36-37ºC
I've tried Oleg FW and it seems much more stable in USB transfers than the other FWs, i will post results tomorrow.
for the interested, I build the rt-n16 firmware regulary now, so you might download these!
Remember these are still alpha versions
I made a new thread: http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?p=185468
there you can download all the firmwares I've compiled :)
thnx for making it available to endusers :)
btw, have to say, wpa2 is still unusable in 1.9.2.7-rtn-2000
Anyone knows which one is the primary antena? I measured and the left and the right one has de same signal level, the center one its weaker. But the stranger thing is that if i connect to the center or right antena i can connect to AP but the redirected ports dont work VERY WEIRD... Any ideas?
Not weird at all. Read how multiple antennaes in MIMO WiFi works ("spatial multiplexing") at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIMO#Multi-antenna_types
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antenna_diversity
IMHO it really makes no sense to speak about a "primary" antenna.
