CLIENT possible?

Hallo Forum,

I do hope somebody could help me with the following issue (wish).

I do not have an ADSL at the moment but my neighbour has an open WLAN (DHCP).

The signal strenth is so low, that I can logIn only if leave my notebook outside of the window.

Now I´d like to use an strong (15dB) antena connected to my WL-500gP with latest Olegs firmware as a "cilent" where the antrena would be outside and work as a relay station.

It that possible? And if how do I have to set up my 500gP?

The 500gP would be connected to my stationary Computer via LAN Cable and furthermore I´d like to connect via WiFi from my notebook to the 500gP.

I have on the stationary computer WinXP SP2 and on my notebook Vista SP1 RC

I do hope somebody is out there and can help.

I don't think it is possible to run Client/AP simultaneously.
So I guess you'll end up plugging your notebook with a cable to get internet.
Ofcourse its possible to attach a better antenna to the WL.
Another solution would be a second AP device but thats another 20watts :P

What about getting a cable to him ? Its the best and most reliable way imho.
If its due to work for a longer period its worth it. 2 hours with a shovel and you got internet.

Hi,

thanx for the answer. I do have a second device WL-600 which I could use then as an AP. Digging is not possible :(

Is there a client solution for the WL-500gP?

Yes but as I mentioned Wifi never worked for me :)
Specially I had problems with client mode but dont mind that because I'm a noob.

I think in web config you can set Wifi mode into client one but I dont really remember how it was in Oleg's firmware check it out urself

A lot of stuff can be found on openwrt. It's a diffrent firmware that works with wl500 also but it takes more work to get it user friendly.

Another solution for you is using bridge mode to link those 2 routers.
But I guess your friend is using his wifi for home stuff too so you cant run in both modes at once.

Have fun searching. Theres really a lot of stuff here and on openwrt wiki/forums.

I would also like to know if it's possible to use the WL-500gp as a wifi client with oleg? I know it can be a WDS repeater, but as I've understood that requires that the other wifi router is set to "WDS master". How could I connect to just any normal not-WDS router? I don't need it to repeat the signal, actually it would be good if it wouldn't repeat the signal, but it is okay if it repeats.

Edit: nevermind, I found out that it should be possible in Wireless - Advanced - Extended mode. Hope it works with WPA2 too.

Yes it's possible, I use it for bridging a xbox360 and media player to my network.
I had to do some additional commands tho...
Just set everything up with the same wifi settings and execute these commands:

wl ap 0
wl wet 1
wl scan
wl scanresults
wl join "mywifi"

wl scan and scan results is for viewing the SSID

You only need to execute these once and they'll work forever:D
Also it's a good idea to set a static IP for your router in bridge mode... for when you need to change configuration things. For some reason you can't get a dhcp with wlan:p
