Prepping the HDD on your computer

I ordered a WL-500g and am doing some research.

I'm thinking of using this guides:

But I have a question about the 'Prepare USB-HDD' part.
Can't I do this on my computer using a partition tool?

Are there any things I need to keep in mind?
Because i'm thinking of just creating a swap and the ext3 partition on my computer instead of using the router to do it.

But where do i pick up again in the guide then? At the 'create filesystem' part?

I hope you guys can help me out.

Fdisk is self-explaining, type m to view the help-page. When you are finished, don't forget to save changes with the w-command before you exit fdisk.
After partition your disk, it's time to create filesystems

mke2fs -j /dev/discs/disc0/part1
mkswap /dev/discs/disc0/part2

Can I do the fdisk stuff on a computer (using another tool)?
Can I make one big partition (ext3) and the swap in the end?

I'm guessing that the wl-500g will pick the ext3 partition when I run "mke2fs -j /dev/discs/disc0/part1" ?

Or do i need to skip that step as well? (i'm guessing no)

I've tried to prepare partitions on an external USB stick on my linux notebook, but the router didn't mount the partitions. When I prepared the partitions exactly as stated in the tutorial, it worked fine. So my advice is to follow exactly the steps in the tutorial.
