3. Fixed: Web Camera May Sleep When There is no motion.

important!!

When upgrading from 1.7.x.x based firmware: you MUST Reset your WL500g to defaults via the restore button at the back after upgrading to this firmware!

you do not have to do this when you upgrade from 1.8.x.x based firmware!

Do not import saved settings from older/other firmwares! this can cause unstability to your device

uhm well the files are at the asus site so I assume they are official :D
i don't have an upload account to their servers or something :)

it seems they are very busy at the moment, the contact at asus did read my request for the changelog but that was at 22.30 THEIR time!! so they are working very very late..

Hi,

Firmware 1.8.1.9 considerably accelerate LPR Printing - nice job.
The only thnig you'll have to do is to upload the firmware.
It seems that there's no need to make a hardware reset when you came from 1.8.1.7.

Thank you.

Does the firmware may implement smb the next time ?

Thanks 4 all !

v1.8.1.9 seems stable, i upgraded this evening.

bug report:
when you need use the DHCP manual IP to MAC setting, you can't change anything at 'nat setting' except port trigger setting, otherwise, your IP TO MAC will fail.

i change virtual server to off and not forward battle.net, the DHCP IP TO MAC bound will fail to start.

maybe that also in other version firmware.

Downloaded as soon as it was put on this site... and the version 1.8.1.9 is running stable on my WL-500G ever since.

I don`t use all features at the moment... but in in access point mode it works for me.

I`m using mixed WPA-TKIP/AES encryption on my WinXP SP2 machines. I did a browser upgrade from 1.8.1.7 and didn`t need to factory reset it again... all settings were still there.

First impression:
What I really like is that asus made the USB features available in the menu also in "AP mode". Its also very nice that you can choose a different port for ActiveX "and" the Javascript webcam. Will test this soon.

looking good so far!

leave the username empty and the password "admin" without the ""

good luck let me know what you think about the firmware!

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!!

when using an empty username and 'admin' as password
you did NOT correctly press the restore defaults button

at this time you are already fucking up the unit, and instability can be caused by doing this

the ONLY correct possibility to login to a proper default configuration is when you have to login with 'admin' as username and 'admin' as password

Hi all,
does anybode tried station mode,
i don't know where to set IP address of the WLAN interface.

WL500g associated to my AP, (a can see it's AMC on my AP) but no ping, no data.
I tried bridge mode, but the same result.
Probably the wan IP address in web conf isn't the ip addres of WLAN interface in station (bridge) mode.

Could you send me minyHowTo.
Thanks

Hi There,

This is my first post on chupa.nl, so i hope my question isn't outdated.
But is there an easy way to hack into this firmware release and enable ssh or the telnet deamon. How can ik do this, is there a tutorial ?

I have some linux knowledige based on RedHat6.1--->Fedora, Knoppix and SUSE9.0 so i must be able to understand the code execution. For hacking into this firmware.

Is the beta 9* version based on this firmware worth installing or is it unstable ?

This because this firmware version is very stable but is missing a lot of the extra very usefull options from the latest CR version.

My WebCams Logitech Pro 4000 and Philips ToUcam FUN II, PCVC 830K don't work after few hours !!

PLEASE HELP ME

In fact at the beginning, I can check my home through the Web page during few hours (about 6 hours) but at each time after about 6 hours, the server stop to work !
I cannot connect to the server and the display is completely black !
When I press the link to display in an alternate way, I see the display in black and white which is the display at the moment (the clock is stop) from which that does not work any more.

So, it's impossible to use the service.
Do you use the webcam during few days, because for me it doesn't work more than 6 hours !

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWER.

Configuration :
Enable Web Camera? WAN & LAN
Web Camera mode : ActiveX & refresh (or it's the same thing with only ActiveX)
Web Camera driver : PWC 8.8 (but it's the same thing with OVC 511 2.10)
Image Size : 320x240
Sens Level : High
REfresh time in second : 1
Active X Port : 7777

Hello,

i now have also instaled this firmware.

My biggest problem was that the wan dies or what i find out is that no matter what i do, like surfing or downloading fast en many files (newsgroup with 8 conecctions)
Everytime the connections falls of after a amount of time, i can not gife a time example because than in takes a couple of ours and some times days and also 3 times in 4 ours ???

So i could never complete a download, when this happens i go to the router menu 192.168.1.1 and go to status page and make a refresh , or renew and than in right works again ???

I read that many people have this problem , what can we do or will this firmware fix this problem.

Is there anybody with a solution ??.

Thanx

uhm...

you can NOT reimport old settings, you have to enter all of them manually
reimporting can cause your router to malfunction (as it seems it does already)

Hm. After five or more resets, i got the wl-500g working. I did not dare to enable more functions than necessary (still lacking MAC Access control for pcs and my other asus wl-300 access point (client mode), lacking dyndns etc.).

some of the settings i did reimport were really from the same firmware version. And why is it that you cannot use old settings? Entering twenty MAC-Adresses is really annoying...

strange enough, after some resets, the standard ssid was "default", after another it was "braodcom" (hint on the generic oem firmware from broadcom)

Styno

Why using MAC based access control? It adds very litte extra security to WEP128. If someone has the will and time to hack WEP128 then they will need very little time to hack your MAC access restrictions as well.
Better use WPA without MAC restrictions, this is much safer and easier to setup after you've wrecked your router.

Why bother to upgrade with all the troubbles if you are happy with an older version?

you just cannot use old settings as they were used in a firmware which was not organized inside, asus got sick of it probably and began developping a 'clean' (?) firmware
that is why you can not use old settings
reimporting will reimport mess you have exported before, that's why its not a good idea

I tried out new firmware because i had problems getting a webcam working and i always had troubles connecting with a medion notebook (nitro 802.11g chip). Also i try out new versions just because i like to try. Still i only try "stable" releases, no custom firmware etc. Maybe asus should give a warning regarding importing older settings.

Do you really think the new firmware is cleaner?

i have to use WEP because i use the older Asus WL-300 as a wlan client for my slimp3-ethernet-mp3-player. This one only understands wep.
As far as i understood you can use both WEP and WPA together. However, the configuration looks not very clean.

What i miss is the ability to set 11 mbps as speed. With some older 802.11b cards i only got connections when i set the speed maximum to 11 mbps. Still, maybe asus improved compatibility with older 802.11b devices.

As allways: Firmware upgrading is a delicate process. The warnings in the Asus users manual and the big font in the start post of this thread are not without reason. Less and lesser experienced users should think hard about the risks they take before upgrading. And if things go bad, be prepared to put in a lot of effort to get things running again. If you're not agreeing with this: DO NOT UPGRADE.

Of course i expect that things can go wrong. Being an experienced users, i still am not happy if something does not work as it should. And by reading this forum, i learnt that older settings are a problem and continued resets may be the cure.

Do not forget that firmware-update these days often are necessary even for normal users. Even mobile phones have a lot of errors, when they are sold with the first firmware. it is only after several firmware versions that these devices work as expected.

I have problem with my router. Donīt know if it is problem connected with installing of this new firmware.
Asus500g send again and again this kind of frame

-start-
Timestamp: 13:30:41:781
MAC source address: 00:0E:A6:7F:06:78
MAC dest address: 01:80:C2:00:00:00
Frame type: 802.3
Protocol: Spanning tree
Source IP address: No IP address
Dest IP address: No IP address
Source port: ---
Destination port: ---
SEQ: ---
ACK: ---
Packet size: 60

Packet data:
0000: 01 80 C2 00 00 00 00 0E A6 7F 06 78 00 26 42 42 ...........x.&BB
0010: 03 00 00 00 00 00 80 00 00 0E A6 7F 06 78 00 00 .............x..

0030: 02 00 00 00 A5 A5 A5 A5 A5 A5 A5 A5 ............
-end-

As a Iris capture software recognized - this should be something connected with spanning tree protocol (probably from the dest MAC addres http://www.iana.org/assignments/ethernet-numbers) - but this is strange. My WAN connection is to our local LAN with static IP (it always shows to me that it is disconnected - but works OK). There is no other switch connected to my LAN ports. Wireless is set as a APonly. So there is no need of spanning at all.
Consequently my router probably spread this frame throughout LAN connected via my WAN port and this doesnīt like my ISP..

So does anybody know how to fix this problem? Or what did I wrong?

Source MAC adress of my machine is 00:0E:A6:7F:06:78
Connection is static IP
I upgraded from 1.8.1.3. (but donīt know if this problem was at this firmware)

Thanx for help.

Generally I think V1.8.1.9 is much more stable than previous versions, still I get the WAN-die issue after heavy transfer (e.g. 700K-800K BYTE/sec for 30 min or longer). eMuling is ok for days however. Direct link from PC to ADSL modem always work fine for hours (in fact it was never down during days of testing).

All extra functionalities, except WLAN (with WEP 64 bit) and internet firewall, are disabled. No USB device was attached. Default values were restored.

I tried all the tricks I can find in the forum (not including the 10M switch however, cannot seem to find one) but none helps. Any idea?

Taiwan (no not Thailand:).... that's a 8M/640K ADSL connection with floating IP. 8M is priced at about USD$35 including line lease and ADSL modem rent, very close to 2M and 2M is priced very close to 1M, so many are upgrading to 8M (and the problems comes with it, 2M gave me no problem what-so-ever).

Yet many are still complaining because people in Japan/Korea/Hong Kong is getting faster service for less:) I think ISP in Japan is rolling out 100M FTTH (fiber) now at about USD$70.

Wondering what's next - GB Ethernet to homes?:D

Hi, i just installed the 1.8.1.9 FW and have problems with connections from a Sweex Realtek RTL8180 based wireless 11 mbit PCI card (driver 1.70). It continuously connects and disconnects. With FW before 1.8.1.7 it was stable.
It does not matter whatever authentication/encryption i use.
Of course i want WPA-PSK, but then i even get no IP-address.

Anyone got a solution?

jbrbv

Should i go back to one of the 1.7 firmware's?
Which one?

The reason i like the 1.8.1.x firmware is the concurrent use of different authentication/encryption methods.
For example you can have WPA-PSK/AES combination together with WEP-128 bit. Very usefull if you have older cards or USB devices and want to use them together with modern cards.

The 1.8.1.9 FW is having the connect/disconnect of 11 mbit cards problem more than the 1.8.1.7.

Hi,
In addition to the dhcp malfunctioning in router mode, in "home gateway" mode printer forwarding does not work either.
I am using home gateway mode.
I have configured virtual server to forward port 515 to 192.168.1.1, the ip address of the lan interface where the printer is.
However, the log sais:

Sep 20 00:26:29 filter: TCP connection denied to 192.168.1.1:515 from 192.168.0.222:1110
Sep 20 00:26:35 filter: TCP connection denied to 192.168.1.1:515 from 192.168.0.222:1110
Sep 20 00:26:37 filter: TCP connection accepted to 192.168.1.1:80 from 192.168.0.2:3136

So port forwarding of the http server works from the wan to the lan. But for the printing server port 515 it does not work.

Somewhere a filter inside the wl500g is blocking it.

I do not have wan to lan filtering on. Even when I put it on and allow port 515 it does not work.

I hope someone can fix these issues so this firmware becomes usable.

In home gateway mode printing forwarding from wan to lan does not work, in router mode dhcp does not work. Surprisingly I bought this router to do both wireless access and printing:0)

Trying this 1.8.1.9 firmware who seems not very good at all, disconnections problems, dhcp who give me strange ip who are not in the range 192.168.1.x and the freeze of the webcam more and more often.
I will go back to the 1.6.5.3 who had no pb for the webcam and no disconnections.

Downloading a Knoppix ISO of 700Mb takes me 14 min. My all time record is 830k/s :D

The configuration in this case is a WinXP laptop with a WL-100g 54Mbit although the on-board Intel 2100 series performes just as good on its 11Mbit.
The WL-500G is in AP only mode with 1.8.1.9FW & WPA-TKIP and AES hooked up to a SiteCom DC-202 Firewall/Router. The WAN port of this SiteCom is connected to the Demon ZyXELL ethernet modem.

I use the SiteCom as router/fw because it has much nicer interface and logging options than the Asus WL-500G.
Good to hear (reason Monnier responded in the first place) the WL-500G`s hardware is also capable of having such high throughput!
Ofcourse this can be expected because the port is also 100Mbit capable.

Why I say this is that I tried many Firewall/Routers like the SMC`s and many times they "don`t" have this high throughput because of a slow 10Mbit half duplex port. My download dropped to 500-600k/s even with a very expensive Netgear ProSafe series.

Another reason to get the Asus WL-500G

I just spoke with Alexis and he downgraded to 1.6.5.3 and it's ok.
We are 3 users now with this pb.
I have bought another one, I will try to find some time to check this one with 1.8.1.9
Dhcp give me the right range of ip now and wifi seems ok now, so just need to fix the webcam pb.
Maybe Oleg got an idea ?

I also installed this firmware. Mainly for the option to use WPA and WEP at the same time. I myself have a Asus WL-100g card, so I use WPA. But my two borther in law have acer'er and eminet-router so the use WEP.

Sometimes I have to work on these laptop's. But I don't want everytime change my settings and I want to use WPA.

This Firmware should be able to be to do this. But if I but this settings in the Asus, my own laptop doesn't want to connect anymore. And with this setting I mean to set WPA (then it works) but the moment that I set WEP an 128 bit key, I doesn't work anymore..... I can't connect with the accespoint. The laptop sees the accespoint. But he doesn't get a IP-adres. But if I enter a manual IP adres, he says there is a good connection, but he doesn't have a connection (no traffic, can't ping, and certainly I can't internet...)

So hence my questions:

- has anyone got this working?
- If yes -> HOW?

O. By the way. I use windows XP SP2 (dutch).

Edit/Delete Message
Should i go back to one of the 1.7 firmware's?
Which one?

The reason i like the 1.8.1.x firmware is the concurrent use of different authentication/encryption methods.
For example you can have WPA-PSK/AES combination together with WEP-128 bit. Very usefull if you have older cards or USB devices and want to use them together with modern cards.

The 1.8.1.9 FW is having the connect/disconnect of 11 mbit cards problem more than the 1.8.1.7.

The only way to get this Sweex card working correctly is to set the Wl-500g's rate to 802.11B!!

I had the combination WPA-PSK/AES and WEP-128 working, but only after i upgraded to 1.8.1.9 (from 1.8.1.7) and did the factory default thing. First made the WPA-PSK settings including the 86400 rekey time, save&restart. Then add the WEP-128 settings. In my case WEP is only key 2 and 3.

Hi, I have tested a full day and found no way to make it run. I installed:

WL-500g with 1.8.1.9FW (LAN connection to a tower) and WL-100g (3.60.7.0 ASUS) with Control Center 2.2.0.1 on Notebook with W2kSP4.
WPA-PSK does not work, WEP 128 does ist good.
Can anyone give me a step by step advice how to make WPA-PSK with AES work on such a system?

I think I have a problem with the key but I am not sure.

Thanks for help

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!!

when using an empty username and 'admin' as password
you did NOT correctly press the restore defaults button

at this time you are already fucking up the unit, and instability can be caused by doing this

the ONLY correct possibility to login to a proper default configuration is when you have to login with 'admin' as username and 'admin' as password

Oh~~~ After i upgraded this firmware, i got the previous 1.8.1.x setting. (I have used 1.8.1.x before, then i downgraded to 1.7.5.9-cr5. now, I upgraded to 1.8.1.9) Then, is it correct?
actually how can i get back the default setting and reset the nvram setting?

by holding the restore button while the unit is powered on, wait till the power led flashes than release restore button and your unit should be resetted

Hi,

I have WL-500b (brand new one) in AP/station mode. 500b is connected to the main AP (Senao), all MAC address are ok, and there is fine connection between (2km link with external antennas senao 200mw on 10db Omni and 500b on 19db Grid).
On 500b LAN ports are connected 2 customers. Ping request between them is OK - <1ms.
If I send ping request from comp. which is connected to the Senao AP to the 500b and both customers in the same time, I will get reply only from one customer which is at that moment acting on the network - the other user is on stand-by (request time out). Ping reply from 500b is death until both customers stop their network activity.

Asus software can see this 500b but there is not possible to access to him before both clients stop their network activity.

In the same time after firmware upgrade there is no possible to have all 13 channels - max is 11?????????
Just to say that I cover all firmware upgrade rules (hardw. reboot after upgrade ...).
.... and the other AP which is in the production long time ago, after firmware upgrade still have all 13 channels ???????????????? Same is tested with 2 brand new 500b devices

Yes I do firmware downgrade, hardware reboot after, and can you image, I get back all 13 channels, but I desperately need this client/Ethernet bridge mode.

Can anyone do some explanation how they are working...........?

PLEASE HELP......

choosing another time zone should fix your 'region' so all 13(14) channels will re-appear
offcourse be aware of the local law

I try also that, in AP mode there is no option to change time zone, date is on 1700 year - and also no possible to be changed.

From router/gateway mode I try to change time zone, but after restart TZ is going back to the defoult (don know right now which one).

.. any idea about the other problems ????? - I get two in last shipement but they look to have same problem. I will test the other with same settings this afternoon.

Hi,

after I installed this upgrade, the WL500g seems very picky about passwords.

Everytime I chose something in the setings it asks me for the password.

This is becoming very annoying, is there any workaround?

Now I have the following entry in my /etc/cups/printers.conf and it works!
...
<Printer lp_wlan>
Info HP DeskJet 695C
DeviceURI lpd://192.168.1.1/LPRServer
