did someone manage to get 2 WL-500g's talking to eachother over WDS / Hybrid mode ?

i've 2 wl500g's(firm 1.6.5.3 patched) here, both in Hybrid mode,
added the MAC address of the remote wl500gs in it's remote bridge list, something seems to be working..

when i do 'ifconfig' it show's the normal devices plus this one:
wds0.2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C:6E:9A:A9:46
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:100
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)

but i'm not really able to ping/reach the other wl500g/network

help me! :)

nope (or yes at asus..... don't expect much reply)

but it's reported working already by someone else

so the problem lies somewhere else i think

can you explain more?
does the card see your network, and you can connect and then it disconnects again and says network avaible and so on ?

i have this problem, don't know if it's because of the wds didn't try (note wds is turned on, because i forgot to turn it off) if it work with wds turned off ?

ps the card i'm having problems with is a Intersil based minipci card.

i have no problem seeing the network

the card can also logon to the network and is shown up in the wl-500g with correct mac

it's a steady link to the network, no lose of connection

also the feature with switching to the nearest wl-500g is working

but the dhcp server doesn't give the pc card an ip wether any data is sent.

after this i connected my old router via cable to the asus wl-500g und used this one as access point for my pc card all is working again and the laptop has no problem with static ip to route to internet over the old router to the asus wl-500g...

same encryption mode (wep 128bit) and same password for the wlan. of course on another channel...

i dont see where the problem is...

i think it is the wds mode because i set one wl-500g back to factory default and used it as an ap. there the pc card was working. then i turned access filter on and the card was working again. turned on wds mode and the card could connect but no data was sent. had no time to verify this again but will do so the next days. you could check this another time with your card if you have the same "feature"

Hello,

I am looking at getting two 500g's to create a wireless bridge. That's all they need to do; no other devices on the wireless network. (Connecting two rooms in my house, instead of a length of CAT5 cable which is difficult to pull through the walls. Neither unit will be used as a typical access point. )

My only concern is security. Does anyone know if WPA will actually work when the two 500g's are configured for the wireless bridge? Or am I going to be limited to using WEP?

Thanks!

Frank.

Hi!

Does anybody have any experience with the WDS feature of WL-500g?

How much does the throughput fall in general when having a WDS network?

Are there any special requirements on clients connecting to an AP running in WDS mode? Will any 802.11g/b compliant client connect succesfully or do I need a client with the same chipset?

Thanks,

STP is always disabled.

somebody knows if it is possible to enable it ?

I'm testing 5 wl-500g with WDS and it comes fool. Connected all to all. So, I want to enable STP to avoid broadcast storms.

Hello there,

I need a little more help on this one:

I've got one WL-500g in "Wireless Home Gateway"-mode connected to the internet via DSL and another one running in "Access Point"-mode connecting several client pcs together and providing internet access via the first router.

Everything works fine until I switch both 500g to "Authentication Method" = WPA-PSK with "Encryption" = TKIP/AES: my wireless notebook logs on to both 500g without any problems but bridging stops working. No more data is sent from one 500g to the other.

Any helpful ideas here (s.picture for details)? Both configurations are identical except for different SSIDs and the MAC-addresses.

Thanks a lot

Dear All,

I have one WL500g ap/router and 2 pcs. WL330g pocket ap's.
The WL500g is connected to the Internet, it's possible to connect via WLAN notebook to the internet - everything ok. But the coverage of the WL500g is to less. So I have decided to take two WL330g to extend the range.
In my opinion I have to switch the WL500g in Hybrid mode, and have to switch on WDS at the WL330g's. I have entered the WL500g's MAC into the WL330g's.
Now, it should be possible to surf via the WL330g, or not?
In my case not, I only be able to surf via the 500g, it is possible to connect to thw Wl330g's but, they have no internet connection.

What SSID sould be entered in the WL330g's?
What channel should be taken, the same, or another?

Who has got experience whith WDS?

Please help to solve my problem

you can try to set "allow anonymous: in WDS setting, and enter MAC addr of WL330g into WL 500g WDS setup

Insert Mac of WL330 into Wl500 too. Activate Hybrid Mode at all AP's. Set fixed ips to all APs in same range. Give every AP a different SSID. Then it should work.
Do you connect both wl330 to wl500? Or do your connect them in a row. If second, please inform it it runs stable. I use wl330 - wl500 - wl330 in a row and it is very unstable, but two in a row work fine.

Hi all,

I've setup my WL500g and WL300g to do WDS with eachother (hybrid mode, 128 bit WEP) but it seems rather slow, average connection speed is around 200 kbyte/second when I send something over the WDS link.

The WL300g is connected to my xbox, and the WL500g is connected to my network.
When I connect directly to the wl300g with my laptop and upload something to the xbox, speed is fine (2 mbyte/second), so the problem is between the WL500g and WL300g.

Distance is no problem, I've even placed them a few metres apart and still I get slow transferspeeds. I've tried setting one in WDS only or both WDS only and the transferspeed doesn't change. I've also tried fixing the data rate to 54 mbit, but no difference. Has anyone experienced something similar?

Aldert

Technik

The transfer speed is quite OK as the connection speed is limited to 2mbit/s in WDS mode.

hmm I did not know that, thanks. There's no workaround for that? perhaps putting the WL300g in client mode or something?

Technik
18-07-2004, 21:14
Well, AFAIK the only solution is to avoid using WDS. I don't know WL-300g so I am not sure if it's possible to turn it into Client mode. Perhaps it could be possible. WL-500g can work in Client mode for sure without any problem.

I'm afraid I'll not be able to help with speeding up, but I don't know of any build in limitation of WDS. Only because everything is going going up and down, a lot of bandwith is used for the protocol.

http://www.pafree.net/media/TB-046.pdf

http://www.tomsnetworking.com/FAQ-16-Wireless+Networking-0.php

will help you in understanding WDS and maybe also some settings?

even has something about the WL300G in WDS with higher transfer rates.

Good luck.

Do anyone know that the Wl500g wds can work with other router?
and the wl330g is trustable?

In my mind, the WL500G is a buggy router. Although I like Asus products, this router it's really make me disappointed.
I look all the wan port die in this site. Do anyone know that the problem come from?

My Thinking are the following:
It's a buggy hardware, whatever Asus programmer do in the firmware, the bug still can't slove.

The wan port die issue come from the cpu power too weak. (i heard from some other opinions, the BT makes the router die, it's come from the weak cpu).

It can be fixed in the firmware, we only need to wait the asus support.

Are there specs known about the 330G, like how many mHz is the ARM processor, how much flash and memory and what OS?

have no idea what you exactly want to do

be sure that every AP has the same SSID/WPA-KEY

should work (tested it here once..)

I want to connect only one access point (or router) to the wired network.

What equipment do i need to use, the WL-300G or other ASUS WLAN products or a mix of products.
I want to start with three access points.

Yes it is in WDS mode (Hybrid) and i'm using now the Firmware 1.8.1.7-2a on both AP's.
Tried with a mix of 1.8.1.7-2a and 9.8.2.1, but that did not work.
Going to try with 1.8.2.4 on both AP's and then couple the third WL-500G.

Going to try with 1.8.2.4 on both AP's and then couple the third WL-500G.

Well the fw 1.8.2.4 does not work to setup a WDS.
Back to 1.8.1.7-2a and it's working again.

Adding the third WL-500g (with the same FW and same settings - except IP-address - and all three in the remote bridge list; AP mode = Hybrid) disturbs the correct working of the WDS. Many ping time-outs, cannot open the web page of the wireless points only the wired AP, etc.
The AP's are placed in a triangle and all three have contact with each other.
Can this be the problem? Are they to close to each other?
How can i solve this?

Hi,

Before I had come across the WL-500G, I was considering two modified WRT54g for the same purpose, but it seems as though the feature set on the 500g is far superior, not to mention better speed and range.

Now, I'm considering purchasing two WL-500G to use for WDS to transparently bridge two ethernet networks that are in two appartments about 150meters (500feet) apart, and I would ideally like to get 10mbit/s or more. I am willing to use special antenna for this purpose. I am wondering what kind of speeds people have been getting from the WL-500G in WDS mode. Are there any advantages of not using hybrid mode? Also how reliable is the WDS connection? Any other information related to this is much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Romeus

I've got three WL-500G's in WDS mode with WPA-PSK/TKIP+AES running. Use the 1.8.1.7-2a firmware.

Which settings are you using in the "Wireless" - "Advanced -menu"?

I have small problem, laptop will only connect wireless to the 2ndWL500g, not to the masterWL500g; i.e it connects but disconnects after 20 secs.

Hello,
I've just bought a WL-500g (btw, it's great!!! :)
After reading this forum, I was able to use it in client mode, and configured it to connect to a remote AP... Very cool...

So my question is: Is it possible to configure this router to act as a bidireccional repeater (WDS?). This way, I could connect to the Asus with a wireless card, and all packets would be forwarded to the remote AP.
(btw, the remote AP is a 3Com)

(I'm still a bit lost in the web interface, so any help would be perfect...)

thanks.

Well, WDS is explained in the users manual, so yes that might be possible if the WDS solution of the Asus and 3Com router are compatible.

Also, if you type WDS in the search, you will find some info about it on this forum.

This is what I did in the Web Interface (and it didn't work...):

--------------------------------------
in: Wireless - Interface
set SSID and channel, same as the remote AP

in: Wireless - Bridge
APmode: Hybrid
Remote Bridge List: XXXXXXXXXXXX (mac of remote address)

in: Wireless - Advanced
Extended Mode: "AP or WDS"
---------------------------------------

What else needs to be done?
How can I confirm that the wl500g is comunicating with the remote AP?

Thanks...

you have to do the same at the remote AP, if the remote AP does NOT support WDS or can't be set into WDS or HYBRID mode you will not be able to use WDS.

Had to disable virtual server! It obviously makes wlan fall out.

have no idea what you exactly want to do

but use firmware 1.8.1.7-2 at all 3 units
and turn them into WDS with WPA turned on

be sure that every AP has the same SSID/WPA-KEY

should work (tested it here once..)

I'm trying to get WDS on two units running with WPA-PSK - WEP is no problems but like others (Wisi) I cant get WDS running with WPA-PSK - can you please list your config in a bit more detail? I've tried all the options of power on/off and using the same/different SSID's but nothing works.....

and perhaps already known.. WDS is broken again

using WDS with WPA-PSK TKIP+AES (which worked fine in 1817)

I have to test further on WEP, TKIP seperated and AES seperated..

yes, looks like this. But I've already fixed radius, so probably wds is also fixable. Please try wds with WEP only and if it works, than I could try adjusting some shit in this code (I'm already had an idea).

I currently own a WL-500g and I was thinking about buying a Belkin F5D7230-4 because I wanted to see how different these two products are. After evaluating the 7230, I would like to put it to good use. Has anyone tried to bridge the Belkin F5D7230-4 and the Asus WL-500g products together using the WDS function? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

WDS is only guranteed to work between Asus devices, i think other devices with boradcom chipsets like linksys could work also, but you have to try it. Dont know about the Belkin, is it the one with USB2.0 Ports ??

Nope, I don't believe this version has any USB ports.

I've read a few post about WDS and bridge connection with asus but I have to admit that I'm really lost :((

I have a wl500 (running 1.8.1.7-CR3) upstairs connected to the Internet through an wired adsl modem. This wl500 serves a wired network with one desktop and a wireless network with two laptop and one media center desktop downstairs with a private DHCP class C network (192.168.0.x)

As I just got a wl-hdd (upgraded to 1.2.3.0) today and since the wireless network downstairs is not very good (Windows wifi systray icons says 18/24Mbps), I was thinking installing my wl-hdd as a wifi repeater downstairs, to get the max power downstairs either with the desktop or the laptop

I've tried to bridge wl-hdd and wl500 together with no results. Here is the configuration I've made :
- Same SSID on both wl-hdd and wl500
- Same WPA-PSK TKIP/AES Key
- Same channel
- Add MAC of wl-hdd in wl500 bridge list and vice-versa
- add mac of wl-hdd in wl500 'allow mac list' and vice versa
- disable dhcp on wl-hdd
- set a fixed IP in my C class network on wl-hdd, with wl500g as the gateway
-disable client mode on wl-hdd and set to not become an AP

and the result is that all downstairs boxes still connect to the wl500g and are unable to ping wl-hdd

What's wrong doctor ?

Hi,
I think you should set the wl-hdd AP to true. Also, it is not required for both devices to have the same SSID (so you can track to which AP (wl500g or wl-hdd) your clients actually attach to).

Does this cure the problem patient? :)

please try first the WL-HDD-1.8.1.9CRx firmware
perhaps WDS is still broken in wl-hdd firmware, try to use WEP that should confirm it as well

Okay, here is our set up.

WL-500G (#1) connected to a fixed IP connection, and connected to a Comp VIA 10/100 LAN cable. Everything working fine here so far as the wired comp has no problems connecting to the internet. Set it Hybrid, with DHCP enabled, channel 1, MAC of WL-500G (#2) punched in, etc.

WL-500G (#2) set with the same SSID as #1, DHCP disabled, MAC of #1 punched in, Allow anonymous Connections = Yes, Connect to APs in Remote Bridge List = Yes, etc. The IP for the router is currently set as the same, but I have tried different ones for each unit and still #2 won't redristribute the signal and internet connection from #1. If anybody has a step by step FAQ or info on how exactly to set up WDS for these units I would greatly appreciate it. Ultimately what we want is for #1 to house the internet connection, share it wirelessly and via wired connections, and for #2 to act as a repeater for #1 wirelessly, wired doesn't matter on #2 for us. Thanks for any help you give me. I've searched through the ASUS pages and this forum and tried a variety of things over two weeks and still haven't found a stable way for these systems to work. Thanks again for any help you might give. If you need any more information, ask and I'll tell you. Thanks.

Thanks for responding. I have read over the FAQs and the help forum on the Asus web page and still come up with nothing. I have reset both routers and reconfigured them a few times over, but still with no stable luck. Is there anybody who might have a few tips for a beginner in this area, like which mistakes are made most commonly, etc? If need be I can post the detailed specs of our setup. Thanks.

Hello there,

I need a little more help on this one:

Krocus

P.S.: Firmware is 1.7.5.6

I think you configured it right... its a bug in the FW(s).
I tried the official Asus releases and each of Chupa`s latest
The only way I can hook up the boxes is with WDS/WEP128
I tried client mode with WPA TKIP and AES and it wouldnt connect either.

v1.7.5.9 rc5 is the one that works best with WDS and WEP128 with me. I also tried v1.8.1.7 rc3 and the latest v1927 rc3c.

I also tried to hook up the WL500g as client to a Linksys WAP54g and this also didn`t work.

Well none of the firmwares works for me. With WEP 128bit there is no problem. Even with the 1.8.1.7-3 customised firmware WDS wont work with WPA-PSK. Hope someone knows a solution or have a working setup.

I also tried the faq. Dont know which settings are used in the faq. But WDS works with WEB 128. So changing this in WPA-PSK and disable WEB should work, but i wont :'(

Yesterday I found information about this. Apparently the WDS standard does not support WPA encryption and we're stuck with WEP. Something to do with sharing certificates not supported on access points.

Here is the link to this info: http://www.tomsnetworking.com/Sections-article78.php

It also has a link to a PDF file which explains WDS in more detail.

Hope thi helps,
Bogdan

Yes I can confirm that the WDS standard is restricted to using WEP. Once you understand WEP it is not that complicated.

Also it seems true that you will lose 50% of the wireless transfer speed since both incomming and outgoing packets will pass thru the WDS as WiFi.

Hence, I strongly suggest to all people that want to expand the range of a wireless network to use a plain old UTP cable between the Gateway or a Broadband Modem and your remote Wireless Access points.

Hi,
i have experienced the same problem during the setup of my 2 WL500g's (both running newest 1.9.2.7-4 firmware). It is probably an error in the firmware but i am not sure, it can be an error in my setup.

The setup is following:
DSL modem -> WL500g (HG mode, WPA/AES, WDS only, advanced mode "AP or WDS"), other WL500g (AP mode, WPA/AES, Hybrid mode, advanced mode "Ethernet bridge", running DHCP only). Both are using same SSID, of course.

Is it generally possible to setup them with WDS using WPA/AES or not ?

"9. WDS using WPA encryption does not function. No connection is established.
Affected versions: all stock firmwares except firmware 1.8.1.7"

Now, which one 1.8.1.7 is meant here ? custom ? which build number ?

Oleg

This bug list if for stocks firmwares only. So, every firmware based on the 1.8.1.7 should work, including stock 1.8.1.7 and custom 1.8.1.7-x.

Hello all

I need to establish a WDS link between buildings to interconnect two Ethernet LANs. I have two WL500G successfuly connected in WDS mode, so this part of the equation has already been solved.

It would be convenient to organize the LANs as two segments; one from, say, 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.127 and the other from 192.168.0.129 to 192.168.0.255. Does anyone here have some experience at doing this? How should the 500G's be configured, with regard to routes? Should I connect the WAN port on each side to the respective wired segment or use just the LAN ports? Must I use only one LAN segment for both sides? This would be inconvenient, since each side has its own Internet access via ADSL routers and I want to avoid confusions with DHCP etc.

Thank you for your help.

I suppose I commited a error/omission in my previous message: I said "two segments" but perhaps I should have said "two subnets" with network mask 255.255.255.128

Does this help to understand my question?

Thank you!

Best way to do this is remove the WLAN interface from the bridge, setup a small segment for it and adding static routes. This cannot be done from the web interface AFAIK, but when logging in with telnet/ssh, you can issue these commands. You can test things and if it works, you can store them in the post-boot file to make the WL-500g load them on startup.

On box 1:

brctl delif br0 wds0.49153
ifconfig br0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.128
ifconfig wds0.49153 172.16.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.252
route add -net 192.168.0.128/25 gw 172.16.0.2

On box 2:

brctl delif br0 wds0.49153
ifconfig br0 192.168.0.129 netmask 255.255.255.128
ifconfig wds0.49153 172.16.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.252
route add -net 192.168.0.0/25 gw 172.16.0.1

Basically what happens:
- Break the WLAN apart from the LAN
- Set the LAN (br0) IP-address, (line 2 may be removed if you set this IP in the web interface)
- Set IP address on WDS interface
- Add route to other network via WDS to other WL-500g box

Also note the WDS might have a different name, but on my three WL-500g boxes the first WDS link has this name (the second WDS link has wds0.49154), but I don't know where these numbers come from and if they're the same allways. Looking up with ifconfig gives you a truncated name (missing last digit), but you may try "ip link" to find the correct name.

hello i have setup 2 WL500G

1 - Primary with Internet Connection. (Should be host)

2 - Slave with connection to the Primary...

i've added both of there MACs in connection list

but it seems that they fight over which one to be HOST

how to setup ??

please ...

i've looked through the manual an it says nothing about it...

Medalha

I tried the steps you indicate but the thing doesn't work. It seems the devices don't route between the eth0 and wds0.49153 interfaces. I only obtain a connection when both 500Gs are on the same subnet. Otherwise, the response to a ping is always the same: "Destination net unreachable".

I suppose I need to use two subnets because each one of the 2 LANs I want to interconnect has its own Internet access via a ADSL modem router wich also functions as a DHCP server. I don't want the computers from one LAN to access the ADSL router on the other building and much less do I want them to see two DHCP servers on the network...

Your approach seems correct to me but something is wrong with the routing function.

Thank you again!

I have 2 wl500g in WDS mode using WPA-PSK encription.... I tested them 1 meter appart from each other and i got only 1,4MByte/s.
Now they are 250m appart from each other but with two 24dbi antenna's pointed directly at each other. I get now only about 1MByte/s.
My question to the proffesionals in here is, do I have to be satisfied with this or is it possible to get atleast 2-2,5MByte/s (as this is the max net throughput of 54g)??

i'm using custom firmware 1.8.1.7-3 from OLEG.
