madplay works, but mp3blaster says: "Failed to open sound device." Is there something I can do about it?

You have to set the propper sound Device in the Commandline. Try
mp3blaster -s /dev/sound/dsp
But on my WLHDD output performance of mp3blaster is verry poor ... it just beeps :mad:
madplay and mpg123 works with no Problems
