I did some changes of NVRAM (SAMBA) in a telnet session. It was not working. After powerdown my router and start up again...router is dead. Power is green, WLAN and LAN 1 and LAN 2 are green, AIR is off...

RESET button pressed..not getting back to the factory settings...

I cannot acces on 192.168.1.1 and also my computers don't get an IP adress anymore..somebody a solution??

try few things tell me the result:

power the wl500b/g off, press and hold restore button and power on release button after 1 second.. does the power led go blinking?

if yes try restoring latest firmware, try again if your router comes alive

if not try restoring firmware 1.6.5.3 for example (yes this can help you sometime) if the router works after this, reset it to default and upgrade back to the firmware you want

I tried these options without any result. The power led will not flash. With the revovery tool it gives a time..not a valis IP adress..after a couple of seconds (20 or so) the LAN1 led wil blink a litttle...recovery utility I press upload again...timer starts...after 30 seconds...no device found in recoverymode :(

eventually try holding the restore button while powering on TILL the powerled (upper one or left one) begins to flash

try it several times at least.. (maybe you did it)
put only one client on the LAN (eg 1 )
and put your client on a fixed ip in the 192.168.1.x range
fill in the gsateway 192.168.1.1
and try to connect.
Try other possble ip's that you might have used just before the crash.
PS really use the LAN port not the WAN. Cable in WAN will not work mostly yet.

Hello Andre@Home

Thanx for your reply,

I tried it allready some time with the restore tool. I didn't change the IP adress in the past so I filled in IP 192.168.1.50 SUB 255.255.255.0 for the LAN card en did the cable in LAN1 of the router... :(

Tried to upload 1.6.5 version a few times without any result...no router in restore mode found. Also the resetbutton pressed for more then 1 minute..no result...pressed the button during powering up for more then 1 minute..also without any result... Can I trow this unit in the as(h)s tray? Or are there other options? I allready openen the device, so if somebody has a clear story about manipulate the hardware in a way...please let me know...at least I can try..because the unit is also now not working anymore..

What you have done exactly before wl500b become dead?
If your unit does not go to firmware restoration mode, then your are out of luck... :( So, the exact sequence for me was following: turn off power by removing power jack from the unit (you may want to wait for 10 minutes, before proceeding after that - this sometimes important), push RESTORE button (do not release it), insert power jack back to wl500. Wait for 5 seconds (at most) and release the RESTORE button.
RESTORE button should be pressed during powering unit on, this is very important.
There is a small chance, that RESTORE button does not work, that's why unit does not go to restore mode.
Also, my PCB contains RESET button on the right side of the PCB if you're looking from the LEDs. So you may want alternatively push RELEASE button, the press RESET and after that release RESTORE.
If it's does not work - does power LED blinks at least once, or it just solid?

Hello Oleg,

Did these procedure a couple of times...power off by taking plug out..wait for more then 1 hour...press the restore buttun..plug in the power...wait 5 or 10 or 1 minute...power led go immediatly to steady green (without any blink).

I presses like you sugessted the reset button on the board (right), the lan leds go to green (all 4) press the restore button, release restore button, release reset button, LAN lied go off, power led is stable on :(

I went to this stupid event, because I wanted to run SAMBA on my unit. I tried with telnet those NVRAM option you gave to me...after reboot command, i still gon no acces to networkneighberhood drive (the rest was working properly again..I had network and internetconnection)... so i thought to be clever and reset the unit once by unplug the power...and this was the result...a dead ASUS WL-500B

Is there another way to go to the flash memory en rewrite it with the good code?

This is not correct. You should release RESTORE after you've released RESET.
I.e. push RESTORE, push RESET, release RESET, wait for 5 seconds, release RESTORE.

That's strange.

Yes, if you're familar (unlikely) with JTAG port - this provides low level access to hardware and allows flashing dead/empty units...

It seems that contents of the NVRAM has been damaged. It should be still possible to restore the NVRAM using PMON but you need an expansion board with serial port. See http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=587&page=1&pp=20

Thanx Oleg and Technik for your help..but you're right. I'm not that technical. Is somebody somewhere in the Netherlands who has this expantion board and wants to help me? Or what are the costs for this kind of board to make it by myself (hope I can make it by myself??) ANd is it easy to get this NVRAM back to live with this PMON...other problem I've HW R1.0 of the hardware..I saw in the topic that this is difficult then? (I've a WL500B bought in september 2003)

Sory my english is very little.

I load many firmwares to my WL500-G. From Olegīs , oficials and "The last"

http://www.openwrt.org/downloads/snapshots/snapshot-20040924.tar.bz2

from Open-Wrt. I load the linux.trx from it.

When I saved the nvram (nvram commit) with a few changes (ipīs for the br0 and eth0) my router just not load more.

I step the corrects metods of recovery, and I open it and pin-a-pin the amd chip with various combinations. But nothing.

I send the router to my vendor to try change it.

I notice you.

Have you already tried connecting pin 10 (A20) of the am29lv320d to GND? If PMON is ok, this should enter recovery mode. See this thread (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=859) for details.

Thanks but I send my router to my manufacturer because I had only three days to remaining warranty of my wl500g. :D

I hope changed it for a new wl500g, otherwise I try your method.

Thanks again.

I will notice you

three days..?
that's not possible.. the wl500g doesn't exist 2 years yet

Asus gives you 2 years warranty so the shop should do that as well, if you are consumer and living in the EC everything -must- have 2 years warranty (look for document 1999/44/EC )
