I want to use the USB HD for backup, using FTP. Second option is Samba but is this save? Can anyone access the drive from the outside when Samba is running?

First I copy or create an empty "test" directory. After that I try to copy a directory "data" with some files to this "test" directory. The result is an error message "[R] 553 Permission denied". I tried to change the rights "test" with chmod, but the modification are not adjusted...

- There are no problems when I copy the same "data" directory in the parent directory.
- I can create a directory in the "test" directory.
- I tried using the private and public (full access) acount, same result.
- I'm using flashfxp v3

create first directory, then upload

i believe this is an disadvantage of stupidftpd

unfortunately there has not been any progress anymore since begin 2003 at the stupidftpd

I noticed it also :(

I found out this work-around also, but it isn't usable for me (automatic backup). I assume there is nothing to do about this bug in the near future? Does Asus know about it?

What about Samba?
- Is it realiable?
- Can anybody access it from the outside?
- Can I use it with different accounts and user rights?

probably the stupidftp (the name should say enough :D ) will be replaced sometime.. i've been looking long time ago already for this but didn't find a nice potentional SMALL replacement for it..

i'm not aware that Asus is aware of this.. i've never mentioned it yet
in mean time i've created an wiki page for current known bugs

http://wiki.wl500g.info/index.php/BugTracker
if you have things for me to add PM me

currently samba is not officially supported but a custom feature also untested. i'm using before it was even released in the custom firmware and works nice allthough at this moment (due to the config probably) it has only lower capitalized names

You just started the bugtracker? ... only one message.

The bug was found in 1.7.5.9-2.

Do you know if the data using Samba is save for the outside? I do not want to share my data with others :)

Can't we or have you tried earlier to contact the stupidftp programmer?
Or somehow fix it ourselfs? I'm an embedded engineer but a newbe in linux. I've just have the router just a week so I do not know anything about the programming evironment and code. But I'm going to learn soon, because I want some extra functionality. Starting with a second httpd, to host my own page on the USBHD (without a password). I've read some about it but not a complete solution. Do you know a (simple) way?

about stupidftp you could download GPL it should be in there, also try to download it at sourceforge and install it to your linux pc test/change things there.. it's just C code

Do you know if my data shared with Samba is save for the outside?

Can I protect it somehow (like FTP, routing to an invallid IP)

ehm no it wasn't

and it's not really important in which firmware it was found if it isn't present in the latest beta available (which would mean it has been fixed)
bug has always been there since i can remember..
