Today source code for firmware v1.9.7.2 was posted on the ASUS website (http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/WL-500gP/GPL_WL500gP_1972.zip). Haven't seen the binary firmware yet, but should be out as well.

Hi,

I am wondering if this "new" firmware solves the huge 1970 security hole.
Hope so, but no trace of the firmware itself, there is only source available ?
Weird, isn't it ?

Hi folks,

Binary trx is not part of ~120MB source package. However you can download it from here http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/wireless/WL-500gP/WL500gp_1972_TW.zip

Some remarks:
1) in my case the first attempt of upgrade via web interface has failed (blinking power led after flashing, no reponse except ping from router)
2) restoration utility recovered my box successfuly to 1.9.7.0.
3) second attempt of flashing 1.9.7.2 succeeded
4) root ftp security hole does not seem to be fixed, at least not on LAN ports (root:root ftp doors still wide open). Didn't have opportunity to test WAN port and WIFI access.
5) the biggest and pleasant surprise are a new bandwidth management options on configuration pages
6) with default bandwidth options (gamer profile) USB-read performance dropped from 2-3MB/s to weak ~200KB/s. Usual performance can be apparently achieved by tweaking bandwidth parameters.
7) got nothing more to say yet, need more time to valuate benefits/drawbacks of this fresh release.

Getting ready to install tonite. Bandwith management options look promising.

Anyone know what "long packet fragmentation is"? -> thanks for the edit. :)

Upgraded to the new firmware this morning. Upgrade failed first time, leting the modem rest with a slowly blinking Power LED. Yanked out the power for 10 secs and started the Firmware Recovery tool and (maybe shouldn't but I did) uploaded the new firmware this way. And voila, it works now with all settings conserved.

They should make this the standard way of updating. Works much faster and more reliable...

How did you get the USB performance back to 2 MB/s, after upgrading it is just about 300k/s ?
