Hi Forum,

yes I know, there are a few threads on this topic.

But still, what is causing the problem of making the network stop while transferring files of a size (mostly) more than 100 MB...networks fails with the message that "The Network name is no longer available" (translated from German though). This happens while transferring from Windows PC to USB-attached WD 320 Essential drive, either while simply copying to either the FAT32 partition and also on the EXT2 formatted partition.

Also my torrent-tool (on my pc) stops while saving file to one the USB-Partitions...this is really annoying me...since i want to use the external drive as an internal file server and storage place....!

The syslog says:
startsmbfilepwent_internal: unable to open file /etc/smbpasswd. Error was No such file or directory
smbd/oplock.c:oplock_break(976)

I really would appreciate any help on that matter....thx in advance

Try reinstalling your samba software? I have no troubles with it..

well,

I use the one that came with Oleg's FW...problem persists...!

This seems to occur only when copying to the HDD via the Asus WL500gP...the other way (from HDD via wl500gP to my PC or Notebook) is working great.

I have no idea what is causing these interruptions...still, suggestions are welcome

try it with a swap file:
http://www.wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=5702&highlight=swap

dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/harddisk/swapfile count=1000000
mkswap /tmp/harddisk/swapfile
swapon /tmp/harddisk/swapfile

Hi WhiteEagle,

thank you for your post...I tried your suggestion, but the problem did not go away...when I start to copy, all access to the disk is stopped (e.g. playing an mp3 file from the hdd) and Windows cancels the copy operation with "Network name not available anymore". After a while playing mp3 from the disk resumes...

thx though, I wonder if there's another fix for that

Greetings

Hi Forum,

seems that the above mentioned problems only oocur now when copying large files to the fat32 partition.

Copying to the ext2 partition seems to work ok now with the swapfile. BTW: Do these commands permanently set the swapfile ? Or do I have to reissue these commands after reboot ??

Thank you for your tips

havent tried it yet but quote from here: http://www.macsat.com/macsat/content/view/22/29/

You can now list your new partitions by :
fdisk -l

My output is :
http://www.macsat.com/fdisk-l.png

You can see your mounted drive, and the swap-space by :
df < enter >
free < enter >

i think you just need to try these commands before and after reboot ;)

Hi WhiteEagle,

well I have 3 Partitions on my USB-Drive:

"fdisk -l" output

Disk /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
________________________Device Boot___________Start________End___Blocks_____Id__S ystem
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1___________1___________15954_128150473+_b__ Win95__FAT32
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2___________15955_______16019_522112+____82__L inux swap
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3___________16020_______38913_183896055__83__L inux

Since the above commands set the Swap-file to the ext2 partition, the swap partition is actually not needed anymore...

I'm still confused...

Does the USB drive function correctly when connected directly to the PC?
I had a lot of problems with faulty USB-IDE bridge chipsets.
Maybe you could test different cables too.

Hi forum,

thanks for all your tips on behalf of the notorious samba bug, but it all doesn't help...! BTW: Aren't there more wl500gp users, who experience the same problems ?

It is still the same problem, that all samba related connections fail while copying one or more files bigger than say 70 MB ... and I tried all the tips... :(

I'm really unhappy with this bug...!

Anyone (Oleg?) with suggestions is very welcome....

Thanks

Zigster

PS: Yes, the drive/cable works OK

Hi REO,

thank you very much for your hint....and yes, Total Commander does the trick, I had no fail in copying large files to the HDD attached to the WL500gP when using Total Commander...!

Too bad is, that some tools (just like bittorrent) from a Windows-PC sometimes provoque the same "crash", when storing at high bandwidth to to HDD. Since this is a "Windows Explorer"-Bug/Problem, it can't be workarounded ...

But thanks...this way I can at least store to the HDD... ;-)

Glad I could help you Zigster, but why don't you use your linux partition (ext3) to initially store your big files ? (the error with big files only occurs on FAT32 partitions)

If you need them on your FAT32 partition you can copy them afterwards via ftp.

Hi REO,

unfortunately this happens on both partitions (FAT32 & EXT3) on the WD HDD (attached to the WL500GP).

I'm happy on any suggestion...
