Some weeks ago I bought a complete ASUS set (500g, 2 PCI cards and one PCMCIA. All 802.11g). I had seen enough positive reviews about this set on this and other forums to buy it.
I installed the 500g in my bedroom on the first floor, on top of a small cupboard. In the bedroom the signal strength was (of course) up to 100%. I have 2 PC's on the 2nd floor, almost directly above the bedroom. Not more than 2meters above the AP. On one pc (which is directly above the AP ) I get a 50% signal strenght, on the other one about 25-35% (very low).
On my notebook I get the 100% in the bedroom but when I walk downstairs it drops dramatically to only 10% or no signal at all. Really frustrating.
I walked with my AP around the bedroom but no better results. Pointed the antenna in all sorts of directions (horizontal, vertical etc) but no improvement. I updated the firmware to 1.7.6 to be able to increase the signal strength. I changed that from 19 to 20 because I don't want to have any risk. This did not improve the signal strenght to my opinion.
I do live in a six-year-old house that has concrete with iron it, but it's definitely no bunker. I mean even with such 'tough' concrete, it should at least be possible to get a good connection for 2 meters....(on the box it says at least 25 meters indoors...)
Is there anything more I can do, without having to buy additional stuff (like antenna)? I feel really disappointed about this product. :(
