is there a way to overclock our asus router using 'nvram clkfreq'?

if yes, what are the possible values?

wl500g deluxe could not be overclocked, wl500g is overclockable, but it's become unstable.

Nop

This older type of Broadcom´s CPU Core does not support this, look at overclocking the wrt54g V1 boards in the web for reasons if you like.
(Hum, same time posting :). 500g IS capable of this? Unstability or not, i thought it was not. Interresting).

If you want at your own risk:

nvram set clkfreq=200
nvram commit
reboot

Freq. 240 is max. for me, :D but note; with a heatsink on chip
and not to much warm place!

Overclocking is one thing, but does it help too?

Standard WL-500g rates 88 bogomips, what about a WL-500g@240?
Is the USB transferrate getting better with a CPU at a hight clock?

I want numbers ;)

Yes and No:

About USB transfer don't know, I don't use it.
If there is a single client or two on the net, there's no reason
to overclock.
If there is fifteen clients on wlan (my case) and four AP's it
helps dramaticly. :o

i've overclocked my wl500 up to 130 mhz without problems. there is a little overlcok but samba work better then first, i think that i will not go up with overlclock on wl500g...but if i know hot to open the wl500g case probably i could isntall an heatsink with fan...HOW OPEN THE WL500G BOX? I haven't seen anybody "viti" (i don't know how to translate the italian word "vite" to an english word)...can you help me?

There have been others who opened their wl-500g before (e.g. the guys who screwed the bootloader up (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=3220) ;) ).

Funny word: screwing, because that means viti in Italian :) You can use Babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/) to translate...

Oleg, could you explain why wl500gx isn't overclockable ?

I have this on my wl500gx :

[admin@asus root]$ nvram get clkfreq
200

Is it normal since it should be 475Mhz ??? Or the multiplicator is 2.375 (i think there is too much numbers behind the comma, i'm waiting a 2.5 or 2.3 not a 2.375) ???

The cpu does not support this. At least it loos like this.

475? :) Wow. 200 Mhz.

475? Wow. 200 Mhz

Yes, i make a big mistake :o It's my notebook which have a 475mhz

The cpu does not support this.

What do you mean by the cpu doesn't support it ? If i tried :

nvram set clkfreq=201
nvram commit
reboot

It will be still 200mhz ? Or will it crash my wl500gx because this feature is not allowed ???

At least it loos like this.

Sorry but my english is a bit poor ... What do you mean by "loos" ????

Thanks for your response Oleg (and for your work too) :)

Well, nothing would happen on the deluxe. BTW, not all frequencies are supported, so I do not recommend playing with this, as invalid setting would prevent wl500g from booting and you will need to recover it using some tricks...

Typo: loos == looks

screwing also has another meaning (something crude) in English!
As for opening up the box, its easy just take off the 4 rubber feet and undo the screws underneath. NB one screw is under a warranty sticker.

I just tried nvram
nvram set clkfreq=200
nvram commit
reboot

but dmesg still tells me that it's at 125mhz and 80+ bogomips, what am I doing wrong?
nvram get clkfreq gives me 200

Snigel

I tried to benchmark speed, but I found no benchmark. Instead I gziped a 6mb file, took me 1 minute with 200 or 125 setting.

Styno

I guess the bogomips calculation performed by Linux during the boot process gives you a rough perfomance benchmark. There should definately be a difference in bogomips while booting @ 175 MHz or 200 MHz.

Snigel
02-10-2005, 20:08
Well but it didn't improve my gzip times either, would be some difference between 125mhz and 200mhz at gziping my 6mb file.

Hello, which chip should I cool when overclocking WL-500g to 200MHz? "4702" or "5325"? Thanks

Edit: more than 50 views and no answer? Maybee Oleg should know

Touch the chip while the router is working, feel which one is hot. Cool that chip.

okay, I'll answer myself - hottest chips on ASUS WL-500g ver2.40 are those marked with RED CIRCLE

I doubt it will work, I have tried to overclock it once

but it hung at boot (so beware!) and then you are possible unable to restore settings via webinterface or anything

Styno

It seems to me (not totally sure) that the two right most chips are DC/DC converters. These converters are not likely to become much hotter when overclocking, also they are able to run at high temperatures.

The left most chip looks like an ethernet chip (WAN) which isn't affected by the overclock, so no extra cooling needed.

The center upper most chip looks like the LAN switch chip. This is the same story as the WAN ethernet chip.

This leaves the center lower most chip which is the CPU. This is the part that is being overclocked. Extra cooling is probably not needed if the housing is properly cooled allready, but otherwise you can choose to mount a heatsink on this part.

Antiloop - I know that's risky, Oleg says in another thread

Styno - thanks for confirmation, I thought about these chips the same way ;)
