I bought one of this routers, and tryed to find some infos about it, but i coudn't find any info about it part of few in russian. If i understand right it should have 32 Mb ram, but in meminfo it shows only 16 :( It same problem like deluxe , where the pmon need updated?
I managed to backup the pmon and the firmware (1.9.6.2), so if anyone interested let me know. Maybe it runs on normal wl500g too ;) ?

I'm interested in pmon & firmware. Please send it to me or give me an URL.
According to FCC pics it should have 32 MB of RAM.
Have your tried measuring routing performance?

give me a link where to upload them or a email box that support big attachement (PM ME ;) )

check your pm/mail box. send all to u. let me know if i can make it see the 32 meg ram ;)

Oleg
16-05-2006, 11:49
ok, got it. the flash is 8 mb, that's nice. the cpu is seems to be running @ 264MHz...

According to CFE values you've 32 MB of RAM enabled in one 256 Mbit DDR chip, which seems to be incorrect, as according to pics it has two 128 Mbit DDR chips... Perhaps that's why you're getting 16MB only.

So, if you brave enough you could type these lines:

nvram set sdram_init=0x0009
nvram set sdram_ncdl=0
nvram commit
reboot

If this fails you will need to replace your router... I take no responsibility on this...

PERFECT. It works :P now 32 meg ram ;)

Hi,

what do you think about this device?

Is it ok?
Where did you buy it?

My thought is, should i buy an 260 € wl-700 or
an 85 € wl-500g Premium!??!

Can you give me an advice?

Hi, Oleg closed this thread (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=5230) referring to the current one.
This threads answers the question about the ram (good) but not about the USB performance.
Searching this forum I see that the 500g has pretty bad usb performance, is this the case also for the 500g premium? Did anybody benchmark the disk performance?

Guys, you should have received CD in the WL500gP box.
This CD should have a firmware sources too.
Could you please check firmware version and sources which are burned to it?

Oleg, I have complained to the ASUS customer support regarding the non-working Download Master. This is their reply:

(...) After our test, the problem exists, Please wait for some days, We will release the new firmware on the website. Sincerely apologize for the inconveniences caused. (...)

It seems that new release is indeed around the corner as they have just released a new Traditional Chinese version yesterday:

WL-500gP Traditional Chinese Firmware Version , version 1.9.6.8
1.Fixed G-Protection mode issue
2.Fixed samba server with using user account and path
3.Fixed user account issue
4.Fixed user may get some error while add more than one torrent
Add and Update
5.Please use new utility to test Download Master (more up-to-date than version 1.1.0.7)
6.Update information about peer and some error message
7.Update ctorrent / dmathined / giftd / snarf

Mr Oleg,

What are the chances of implementing new features of wl500g premium - download manager and uPNP server into a future release of your excellent  custom firmware for ordinary wl500gx?

I think it would make many people happy not to have to leave a noisy pc running all night, and it would save a few kWh of electricity!!!

Now, I know this is sortof available through 3rd party applicaitons but for the less tech-savy among us it is beyond our knowledge getting them to work.

Oleg, I checked my CD and there seems to be no firmware supplied on it. As said, my Premium has version 1.9.6.2 installed, Asus has just recently released 1.9.6.8 in tradiotional chinese (o_O), I'm eagerly awaiting the English release because loads of bugs on this one.

I have 500g premium and I can confirm that there is no firmware or sources on the supplied CD.

And the 1.9.6.2 is the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen... it is full of bugs and it crashes when saving settings...

Oleg
29-05-2006, 17:27
Thanks guys. ASUS is violating GPL as usual...

Yet another question - is there anyone, who has tried benchmarking this box? Does it handle 100 Mb/s when routing? Does USB performs fast?

TribesMan
29-05-2006, 17:46
I have no idea how to test routing speed, but I did test speed of hard drive connected to the USB. And it is about 3MB/s when uploading to the disk and about 2.5MB/s when downloading from the disk. Quite slow.

But there is another problem. I tried uploading some big files (700MB) from local computer to the USB hard drive, and it timeouts before starting transfer. The bigest files that can be transfered from windows PC to the router is 75MB. On the other hand 700MB file can be uploaded from Mac OS X... Is this Windows or router problem? I tried to do it on two windows machines and even through WiFi but big files are no go in any case from windows.

Oh and the supplied firmware is awful... there is an update on asus site, but only in traditional chinese... wich is useless.

Hi,

I tested the speed of the WL-500gP and I think it's pretty good. I transferred data with ~10 MB/s over the wire and with ~3.5 MB/s over wifi (the protocol used for testing was NFS).

I'm quite happy with my new aquisition and since I won't mess with the firmware for a couple of days, Oleg if you need something in particular from an "untouched" piece of hardware tell me. My firmware is 1.9.6.2 and the hardware version is "WL500gH-01-00-00-00".

As florin_m previously stated, only a part of the memory is "active", the output from "free" is:

total used free shared buffers
Mem: 14308 12880 1428 0 2500
Swap: 0 0 0
Total: 14308 12880 1428

I don't uderstand, why did ASUS bother to ship the router with 32MB if they are using only 16MB ?

The CD indeed doesn't contain any firmware or sources, a complete listing follows:

You mean WAN to LAN transfer, right?

Ah, now that you mentioned it, I think I tested with both source and destination being in the LAN. I'm not sure because I did a lot of changes in my setup and I don't remember exactly when I ran the tests. It is possible that I actually ended up testing the switch instead of the router ...

Tomorrow I'll setup my network in such a way to force the packets to be routed between LAN and WAN. Afterwards I'll post my results here.

In the meantime you can consider my previous statements as "switching tests" not "routing tests". Anyways, I'm pretty happy with the WL-500gP since the speed I got using the switch is almost the same as using a crossover cable.

the routing performance is great:

22:06:02 (9.01 MB/s) - `/dev/null' saved [558,054,874/558,054,874]

the test was with enabled firewall and Logged packets set to both :D

Hah, asked the technical support about it. There's their answer:

Dear Customer, The firmware is dual language, you can install it to your module. I believe it's no problem. And the date is not important. Please note the version number.

Now I'm really tempted to risk of having to learn Traditional Chinese in order to keep using it. :)

They have also removed the Radio Power box in the Wireless/Advanced settings page.

This sucks. I upgraded too and the signal is very weak, tx rate 5 Mbps. With the original firmware I had a pretty decent signal.

After giving the command wl txpwr1 :
TxPower is 127 qdbm, 31.75 dbm, 1496 mW Override is Off

After the command wl txpwr 40
TxPower is 64 qdbm, 16.00 dbm, 40 mW Override is Off

After a restart
TxPower is 127 qdbm, 31.75 dbm, 1496 mW Override is Off

So, nothing changed. It's outperformed by my old Netgear WGR614 (same settings : WPA-PSK, same location) witch had tx 48 Mbps 24/7.

Since new version does not have Tx power control, I'm not sure if the Tx signal will be sufficient in my setup. Because I was barely able to recive in some "distant" corners of my house with old firmware on maximum 12mW setting, and if this one is worse...

Hello!
I would like to buy one of the two routers, the WL-500 Deluxe of WL-500 Premium.
I don't know which one to choose. The Deluxe seems to have more options regarding custom firmware. But the Premium is faster.
What it want from this router is to setup a http and ftp server available from the WAN and LAN. I would also like to connect an external hard drive and store music and other files and make them available from the LAN. Of course, internet acces is also required. The premium has the download function, which seems nice, but i can live without it.
I am not really familiar with all the procedures and requirements in order to achieve what i said i need above.
Price is about the same, but the Deluxe is quite harder to be found around here in shops/online stores.

Can anyone help me and explain why I would need one instead of the other?

Thank you very much!!

I haven't got the Premium yet, but the following method works on a WL300g:

Use the hidden admin page at http://192.168.1.1/Main_AdmStatus_Content.asp to run this command:

dd if=/dev/mtd/1ro of=/var/tmp/display.jpg

Then just download the firmware from http://192.168.1.1/display.jpg

This works because there is a dangling symlink from /www/display.jpg to /var/tmp/display.jpg, maybe intended for the webcam application?

You might want to check this with ls before issuing the dd command...

Two additional notes:
- The http server can't be trusted. I had to make several attempts to get the complete image.
- The downloaded image will end with a lot of "ff" data, caused by the empty flash area at the end (before the nvram partition). This is not part of the image and should probably be deleted before reflashing

No guarantees whatsoever

Hi, first of all, I'm new here :)

haven't tried the oleg firmware yet, but I was wondering

A friend of mine is using SSH/Telnet over the internet to tell his server to send the magic packet to the desired pc, so that that pc will turn on with Wake on lan (WOL)

is it possible to implement such thing in the router?
and make him remember one pc's mac to turn it on after hours or days with WOL?

Oleg's firmware contains ether-wake.

usage: ether-wake [-i <ifname>] [-p aa:bb:cc:dd[:ee:ff]] 00:11:22:33:44:55

This program generates and transmits a Wake-On-LAN (WOL) "Magic Packet",
used for restarting machines that have been soft-powered-down
(ACPI D3-warm state). It currently generates the standard AMD Magic Packet
format, with an optional password appended.

The single required parameter is the Ethernet MAC (station) address
of the machine to wake. This is typically retrieved with the 'arp'
program while the target machine is awake.

Options:
-b Send wake-up packet to the broadcast address.
-D Increase the debug level.
-i ifname Use interface IFNAME instead of the default 'eth0'.
-p <pw> Append the four or six byte password PW to the packet.
A password is only required for a few adapter types.
The password may be specified in ethernet hex format
or dotted decimal (Internet address)
-p 00:22:44:66:88:aa
-p 192.168.1.1

You can write scripts where you remember the MAC adress of the desired PC ;-)

Edit: Sorry, this syntax is for an extended version of ether-wake I have installed on my WL-500gx. In Oleg's firmware busybox handles ether-wake.

BusyBox v1.01 (2006.01.07-10:53+0000) multi-call binary

Usage: ether-wake [-b] [-i iface] [-p aa:bb:cc:dd[:ee:ff]] MAC

I tried Olegs wl-500gP firmware.

Everything works great but when i enable the 32mb of ram with

nvram set sdram_init=0x0009
nvram set sdram_ncdl=0
nvram commit
reboot

than, my ethernet ports are dead.
Did anybody have the same promblems?

Hi,
I'm using the latest build from Oleg for the WL-500gp and I'm trying to use "ipkg.sh" to install the VPN Cisco client for openwrt (vpnc) and I get some errors from ipkg when installing not just vpnc but anything.
Is it compatible? Where can I find a guide for ipkg.sh for Oleg firmware?

Thanks in advance

Hello!

I hope this is the right thread to post my question!

I baught a WL-500gP yesterday to use it as Home-Gateway with Austrian Internet provider AON (AONspeed)

It should connect to an Speedtouch 510i ADSL Modem.
With windows the connection worked with adress 10.0.0.140 for the network card and VPN connection to the modem which has 10.0.0.138.

I also used this connection with linux which was pretty simple (pppd/pptp 10.0.0.138)

My problem is that i can't get an internet connection with my WL-500gP. I used the PPTP option, local WAN adress 10.0.0.140 - Standardgateway 10.0.0.138, but the response in the log is all few seconds "input/output error: can't get channel number"

I updated to the latest official firmware, but the errors stayed the same.
I also searched this forum, but found nothing similar to my problem.
I would be very glad if you could provide me some help.

Is it possible that i could solve my problems with olegs firmware? I've seen its ins state "preview 4".

With best regards

Hi Martin and thank you for your quick response!

Basically everything is the same.
Just the DNS Servers are entered manually, but I didn't try them automatic ever.

As far as I remember MTA and MTU are disabeled, but the default settings are the same.
I didn't entered an hostname till now, but i will try it in the next hour.

My actual firmware version is 1.9.6.9 but i will also try olegs 1.9.2.7-7e for the 500gP.

I'll give an update as soon as I tried it!

does anybody has problems with the FTP stuff??

cuz sometimes when I want to login it keeps saying that I can't be logged in and that I'm not in the users list.

it sucks while I did configured myself in the ftp of the router

with the 250GB I can understand that, but with the 1GB???

freaking thing, loL :)

Hello again!

Olegs 1.9.2.7-7f-pre4 was the solution - thank you very much @oleg!
It seems to me that the official firmware doesn't do everything in the right way - standards FTW ;-)

The same settings as before, and it worked immediately.

Also the log-output is al lot more meaningful for me as I am familiar with linux, and the now possible telnet-connection... wel, lets see what i can do with it :-)

Also thanks again @martin for your help!

Any chance the Premium will have streaming mp3 capabilities in it (standard firmware or a developed one) so I can hook up a normal USB HDD and use it with something like Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com/) or a Pinnacle Soundbridge (http://www.pinnacle.fr/PublicSite/uk/Products/Consumer+Products/Digital+Media+Adapters/Digital+Media+Player/SoundBridge)?

The squeezebox uses SlimServer and the Soundbridge uses MT-DAAPD (and FireFly).

Perhabs you can use these packages:

ushare (best one i think) Project Page here (http://ushare.geexbox.org/)

wizd

mt-daapd (which supports iTunes)

vdr-mediamvp

for Packages look here (http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/unslung/wl500g/Packages)

Hello again!

I got another strange problem with my 500gP...
It concerns the DNS behavior.

I connect to the router with 2 machines: 1WinXP with LAN Cable - everything works well.
But when I connect via WLAN with my Laptop, I cant get DNS resolving.
I can ping the DNS Server and any other IP in the web, but pinging for example www.google.com gives me a timeout.
One time resolving seemed to work (dont know why...), but i still got a timeout.

Ping www.google.com [66.249.85.99] mit 32 Bytes Daten:

Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung.

ipconfig /all displays everything correct, including the DNS Servers.

Has anyone some experience with this behavior?

Thanks for the links. geeXboX uShare link sais:

- Added new Microsoft Registrar service which fakes the authorization required to be able to stream to MS compliant Media Renderers.
- Updated AVI file MIME type for better compliance with UPnP devices.
- Better UPnP CDS compliance when request count and index are 0.
- Removed the nasty characters from UDN naming for compatibility issues.
- Force usage of libupnp >= 1.3.1 (previous versions of the library are buggy and should not be used).
- Support for XboX 360, D-Link DSM-320 and Roku SoundBridge M2000 Network Music Player devices.
I guess it should work with M1000 SoundBridge too!

if you use are wired connection to the router from the laptop, does the DNS resolving work? If yes, check your network filters on your router, dns seems blocked from wlan. If no, check dns-forwarders on the router and check whether there is anything wrong with your notebook.

Another hint... if you're using DHCP check which dns-server gets submitted to your client. In M$ Windows, look at ipconfig /all.

Here is my question:

Situation: ADSL to an SMC router with a 192.168.2.x subnet and computers, then my ASUS premium connects with Static IP as 192.168.2.253 and operation mode is set as Home Gateway. I have a desktop and a laptop connected to this router with LAN and sometimes WLAN. Everyting working fine, like internet, ftp e.t.c. Just the desktop and the laptop cannot ping each other. They can ping the router 192.168.1.1 but the 192.168.1.2 cannot ping the 192.168.1.3, so that is why I cannot reach the USB HD plugged in the router....

When I click on the show workgroup computers , nothing happens, actualy is says I have no rights to view or there are no computers...

Any ide what to do? or set? I am usin the latest official fw 1.9.6.9

thanx in advance

I have a wl500gp router.
question is: can i connenct two external usb storage to the router?

my plan:
An usb 256/512mb pendrive for running linux programs (samba, ctorrent, mc etc...) and swap.
And an usb-hdd for torrent and ftp downloads?

Because now all (progs+downloads) on the hdd but the hdd not on always and this 'confusing' the router.

thanks

There are two USB ports.. why should they add two ports if only one can be used? Offcourse you can use both for external use.
