Bekijk de volledige versie : bandwith limited by WL500G ?
My DSL connexion is 8000/1000kbps (in fact 7200/800 reported by the modem). When my Ethernet DSL modem's directly connected on my WinXP computer, I can download at more than 700 kBps. If ethernet DSL modem and pc are connected to my WL500g it seems to be impossible to download at more than 250 kBps...
Bandwith management's not used into WL500G parameters.
I use the latest official firmware from Asus.
What can I do to fix this ?
Thanks a lot.
You could start by installing a firmware that would give you telnet/ssh access, so that you can see if the CPU is under 100% load when you get your max achieved transfer rate.
Both Olegs Firmware and OpenWrt will give you this posibility.
Thanks a lot MacSat.
I'll flash the router tonight (i'm at work now).
How to access modem by telnet ?
Opening a dos prompt windows under XP and type "telnet 192.168.0.1" is ok ?
Do you think it's a CPU overload problem ? I have to say that I have on my LAN an audio streaming server that upload to the internet 24 hours a day about 256 kbps of data, but I don't think it's too much for a router ?
well my router's now patched with latest Oleg's firmware, bandwith limitation is still here.
I tried to login using telnet and it works, but as I don't know any unix command I can't find wich command to send to monitor cpu usage...
please help !

Try to run : top
to see current active processes.
Also, uptime will give you some CPU load averages.
Well, here's the results :
load average: 0.04, 0.11, 0.11
Is it good ? what can I check else ?
When I download a big iso image (620MB) from my ISP, CPU load is about 20% but the download speed is 255kB/s :(
If I connect my ethernet modem on my PC I can download at 750kB/s... I realy don't understand... I can't find what's wrong with this router :(
I tried the latest firmware from Asus, the latest firmware from Oleg and no difference :(
Please help it's not nice to see my connexion act as a 2MB line when I know my modem sync at more than 7MB :(
I have the same problem right now. Did you manage to fix it, and if so, how?
Is there anybody out there who can download at >3000 kbps when connected by WLAN to the WL-500g (which connects to the Internet via DSL)?
nope. Problem unsolved at present time :(

Yeah, I just switched on my acer travelmate, and I downloaded a linux cd with 1062 KB/s (I have an 10240K/1024K adsl), so that one goes just as quick as my wired desktop does.
I don't have any limitations on bandwidth whatsover. Mine runs 1.9.2.7-7g (oleg) and I use "automatic IP" on the wan interface, no PPTP.
How do you connect to your ISP?
Things that come to mind is MTU Size and probably you do not connect to your ISP with "automatic IP". If you use PPTP you could benefit from setting your MTU size smaller than the default.
cheers,
Wiz
It was not related to the WL-500g, but rather to my Windows XP settings. If you experience the same problem, try the following:
- Does it appear on another computer connected via WLAN to your WL500g?
- Boot Linux on your computer (download a Knoppix CD if you don't have it installed), does the problem appear as well?
- Use VMWare to set up a virtual WinXP computer inside your Windows system. Does the problem occur inside the virtual system as well?
- Download two or three files and see if the combined speed exceeds the maximum speed you can get with one download.
For me the results were No, No, No, Yes. So it had to be caused by my WinXP installation.
I went here
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
and downloaded the first tool from the list. Applied the "optimal settings" with highest speed to "all network adapters". Rebooted Windows and I could download at full speed.

Thats big sch..t it editet only 1 workstation and it dont works we must change the settings in router not in pc!! ochh....
width other firmware works fine
I am using the latest firmware 1.9.2.7.7g. However, having the same problem as unable to download more than 2M via the router. I can fully use my broadband bandwidth at 4M if my PC connects to the Modem directly.
This is getting annoying.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
In addition to this, I also noticed a weird problem that I upgraded my PC which have a Gigabite interface. However, when connects to the router, the network said connected but I am unable to ping the routher. Connect via another HUB, works fine ?!?!?!?
weird, my gigabit interface does not give me any trouble. What you can do is set the connection speed at 100 mbps/FD as the switch in the asus don't go beyond that. Maybe that helps?
For your slow download, try to get a tcp optimize utility and play with MTU size. If you use pptp to connect to your internet provider, the maximum packet size is smaller than the default 1500.
Tried both :
1) unable to change to pppd as I am using cable. Have to use automatic IP.
2) tried to set to 100 full and other value. no luck. Tested cable and connection, all seems fine except no data pass through the cable, hence, no ping !
