Hi,
I'm a newbie here... I would like if it is possible to install Direct Connect and several harddrives on the WL-500g/gx? My computer is always on to run Direct Connect, so it would be really great if I could run the program on the router and remotely control Direct Connect with VNC. Is this possible?
I have several friends with a lot of knowledge of linux... I just need to be pinpointed in the right direction.

Hi,
These devices have limited RAM and processing power and as such you certainly don't want to be trying to run any kind of GUI based application on them.
The fact you mentioned VNC seems to suggests it is a GUI based application.
Second you say you have friends that use linux, suggesting your probably using a windows application. You cannot run a windows application on a different OS (And this case a different CPU architecture also) without some kind of emulator/api layer such as wine. These are very big in order to provide all the functionality (APIs needed to make a windows program run, and again cannot be run on an embedded device such as this!
If there is a comand line and linux based ( and will have to be opensource as will need crosscompiling) equivalent of whatever this program is , then you stand some chance of running it on the device.
Hope this clears some things up.

Forgot to mention.. on the hardrives side.. you could in theory add many, assuming u have USB hubs to chain together.. But bare u mind they will all be sharing bandwidth of a single USB connection which in the case of the WL500g is only 12MBbs, the WL500gx has a USB2 chipset so would certainly handle the task better at 480Mbs

Sure, if all are on one Port.
The GX can have up to four "root ports" which are logical a hub, but physical each one hase the max.bandwith, so you can possible atach four disks with full speed.
For the Direct Connect thing: I know this and thought it´s gone mostly offline since the original neo-modus.com has closed the doors... maybe you can update me on this.
But OK, there are commandline linux versions of direct connect out there General (http://www.freeweb.hu/dclinux/index-en.html)|LDCC (http://www.softservice.com.pl/ldcc/). Grab your friend, let him croscompile the software (see forum for tutorials) and set it up on the router.
For multiple harddrives you may need to do some litle changes on the underlying firmware image itself to support software raid or some other harddisk-combining solution.
From the resouce side, it is sure possible on the GX and maybe G models.
