Hi

I'm french (scuse for my poor english)

I have a problem with my wireless connection between the wl500g and my centrino notebook.

Even at a distance of 2 meters between my router and my notebook, speed varies from 1 to 54 mb/s (the notebook can be even disconnected sometimes)

Considering the short distance, I think that there is a problem, how to solve it?

hi silver,

i 've got the same problem (see my thread http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=4452 !).

which FW are you using? the last Oleg 1.9.2.7-7b?
the last thing i tried is to type in the console:

wl scansupress 1

&

wl intereference 2

do NOT reboot the router, check it with "wl scansuppress" and "wl interference".
for me it seems to work! (at the moment, you never know :o )

Did you try wl rssidump (http://wl500g.info/showpost.php?p=16918&postcount=3)? Post here output of this command (RSSI - Receiver Signal Strength Indicator).

switching interference off ( "wl interference 0" ) i get:

i really don't understand all these variables. sorry. i hope everything is ok now! to be honest i don't trust my system (centrino+wl-500gx+1.9.2.7-7b)... but i'll see, yesterday and today it seemed to be stable. but i already got this feeling once and on the next day nothing worked anymore. maybe now!!:D

a big, big thank to everyone, helping me out! also in the german forum!!!:)

hi silver32,

today, my wireless died again. i can't use it anymore...

this is very strange, because it worked well the last two weeks! i did not change anything at all! i think there is a big problem of the Oleg FW 1.9.2.7-7b, if there are many other networks around you. today there are 7 other networks around me. i really don't understand!

I AM WAITING FOR A NEW OLEG FW!!!

Bonjour je suis Francais et j'ai eu le meme probleme.
Je vais continuer en anglais que tout le monde puisse profiter de mon experience.

So here is my experience with my Centrino. I'm owning an Acer TM800 and all was fine since the day i upgraded the drivers from v8.1.1 to v9.x.x. After upgrading i had the same symptoms as you. The Asus doesn't seem to be faulty since i had the same problems at my workplace with a Netgear AP....
At my workplace a colleague is experiencing the same issues with a Sony Centrino notebook.

I got so pissed of by this Intel card that i replaced it with a Gigabyte WI01GS based on a Ralink chipset..... Now everything is just find, i can even connect to AP's the Intel card would'nt let me connect (even with drivers v8.1.1). I bought the card on eBay Germany.

If you want to downgrade to v8.1.1 to test let me know, because this old version of the driver is no more avilable on Intel's website, but i can upload it somewhere.

PS : No matter what driver version i was using i always had the best results using the Intel utility rather than the Windows utility.

Hi silver32,

it is me ones again...

try to use netstumbler (http://www.netstumbler.com/) to "see" the networks of your neighbours. which chanels are they using, use an other one! don't select the auto- function. this was one very important thing for me. unfortunatly there are sometimes up to 7 wireless- lans in my area, so it is hard to get a free chanel! using the chanel of a neighbour works very slowly or does not work at all!

maybe somebody else knows, how to set up the 500gx to search for a free chanel and to change to the new one at once!? i allways get the same chanel in "auto- mode", sometimes it is not free anymore.

I've been struggling with the 2000BG in my X41 Tablet for a while.

I had the constantly changing connection speed problem, but an update to intel's latest driver solved that. You can get it on the intel site, although the latest there is 9.0.3.9, but I was able to get 9.0.4.8 from IBM. 9.0.3.9 did solve this problem for me.

http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm

Even with the update, I have had regular problems with holding a connection with any of the custom firmwares beyond 1.9.2.7-3b. The connection just drops out randomly--this is a common problem with the 2000BG and many routers, and there seems to be no fix that works in all cases.

I have found that 3b works w/ reasonable stability. I still lose the network connection at least twice a day, but a cycling of the wireless card off and on will reestablish it.

I have tried various versions of 1.9.2.7-6 and 7, and now I am actually trying out 3c, (haven't tried 4). I bet the switch to a different wireless driver in 1.9.2.7-5 is the culprit here. I don't think it is necessarily the new driver in the firmware, but rather that the intel card/software that is incompatible with this 5 and above.

Note that the likely problem is the 2000BG, not the firmware. Many, many people online complain about this wireless card. It works fine with some routers and has difficulty with others. You can find all sorts of recommendations on how to solve the problem, but it seems that there isn't one that works every time.

Honestly, if this was my computer, I would replace the 2000BG with another miniPCI card. But it is a work computer, so I'm not investing anything in it.
