Hi everybody,

my first post in this forum, so hello everybody.

My WL-HDD is now working fine with a 250GB Maxtor disk.
I created a 160GB and an 80GB partition, since the
firmware 1.2.3.9 (know changed to 1.2.3.4) didn't allow
bigger partitions to be typed in the field.

Can anybody explain where this 160GB limit comes from.
Did anybody try to extend the file system size to something
above 160GB by using linux commands (I assume fdisk/mk2fs)
and test what happens?
160GB doesn't really sound like an adressable space limit or something
like that.

I would rather prefer one big partition....

Best regards,

Beachboy

Hi beachboy (nice to see you here:p ),
you tried formatting your Maxtor just in an external Case with (for example) partition magic and .ext3? Then put it into the wl-hdd and look what happens. Max 250GB should work - but its just a suggestion ; I didnt tried it yet....

Hi Rolano,

well, in that case we could move back to the other forum, if
we are alone here
Well, I think using Linux on the box you could even create
that file system without putting it somewhere else...

I'm surprised that nobody has tested that so far....
(So it seams I have to test that over the weekend ;-))

Best regards,

When the WL-HDD was first released there was some confusion over the maximum disk size usable.
If I remember rightly, I think 160GB was the maximum partition size supported by the hardware/firmware.
Have a look at the changelog for Asus firmware release 1.2.3.0 here http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=1308

If you're using a 250GB drive then it must be 3.5". How have you got it connected?

Yes, I know, but the question is what is the reason for this restriction:
- IDE Controller can't do more (?!?)
- Just the entry field in the FW is checked for the values, otherwise no restriction
- There are other restrictions, which I have not yet considered.

Yes, I used this connector:ebay Link (http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6834371974&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1)

It works fine. I even used hdparm to set the spin down.

PS: Be careful when buying an connector, since most 44pin to 40pin
connectors, which are offered in the electronic shops, are meant
to connect a labtop-disk to a IDE 40-pin controller.
This is the wrong direction for what you want to do.
(The reichelt.de to my opinion shows a wrong connector)
