Bekijk de volledige versie : Something similar like the "wan port dies" issue

Hi All,

My Asus WL-500g has a similar problem like the issue previously described in the "wan port dies" thread. After X amount of traffic (or sometimes, just because it feels like it) my Asus WL-500g will drop all connections to the outside world for about 20-30 seconds and after that it continous (I don't have to reboot the Asus, just restart my ftp download, sign in to msn again etc).

Nothing is appearing in the logs and the problem seems less severe when I set my SMC adsl modem to 10full and the Asus to 10full or to auto. I think the problem only occurs with the WAN port, not with the LAN ports.
I will try some more things (SMC adsl modem to 100full, asus 100full etc).

I'm using the latest firmware from Oleg (CR4)
My adsl modem is a SMC barricade 7401BRA
connection between the SMC and the Asus is provided by a straight utp cable

Does anybody has some suggestions? or experienced the same problems?

I have the same problem as you can see here:
http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?t=419

Try the original asus firmware, 1.6 version, with that version my connection is stable.
Does someone know what is the problem? How can i help to solve this?

Yes but you are using ppoe, my smc adsl modem is running in bridge mode. (My adsl connection is not ppoe based but ATM based )

I will put a hub between the connection of the ADSL modem and the ASUS to use a sniffer (probably ethereal or snifferpro) on the line, see if something abnormal is going on

I've analysed the connection drops and it only happens when there is some traffic on the line. Attached is a picture.

Y axis is the duration of the connection drop (in seconds) and x axis is the total analysis time (in seconds)
Most of the time it coincides when there is traffic on the line (but not a lot of connections, just normal traffic )

I think I've found the main issue, when something makes a number of connections very quickly, the wan port dies, and then starts working again after 20-40 seconds.

Starting emule is a sure way to reproduce it, but also when my mail client checks my mail it sometimes happens ( I have a large amount of IMAP folders and several IMAP email accounts, I think outlook express makes a new connection for every folder and account or something)

I know I have changed my emule config to allow a lot of new connections to be made in a very short timespan, this is not the default behaviour. Have you done the same Castanheiro?

It looks like I'm talking to myself ;)

The problem does not occur with the 1.6 firmware from the Asus website, it just keeps chugging along, even if I try to open 900 connections or something. I havent tested Oleg's version yet but I will do that later.

Castanheiro

Well, i didn't changed anything particular to the standard emule connection settings, i only reduced the max number of connections (to 500). In azureus i set the "Slowly connect to new peers - For people with internet disconnection issues", but it has no results.
1.7 firmware (oleg's also) still drops connection, 1.6 works ok! It must be something with the base code of the firmware, it's not something that oleg changed.

I'm now testing 1.7.5.9 firmware version that i saw in another post in this forum. I will post the results later.

The bug is present in 1.7.5.9 version.... It only took one hour of use of amule and azureus and my adsl connection dropped... What annoying thing!

I still see the problem with the 1.6 version, although less severe (I even have the problem when I put a simple 10mbit hub between the SMC adsl modem and the asus wl-500g, so it's also not the autosensing issue) It's not a cable issue because before the cables worked fine, only when I put the ASUS in between I get the disconnections.

I'm sending it back, I only have my asus wl-500g for a few days so that's no problem. It has a lot of features but if it cannot even keep a stable connection it's nothing for me. I think I can exchange it for a linksys WRT54g or something similair
I hope people from Asus are reading this forum and see that they lose customers because of this.

It seems that I made a booboo. After fixing the speed issue (switching off autosensing etc) I still had problems.. here's why:
I left the dhcp client running on my SMC adsl modem (in bridge modus) while I configured the ASUS with a static ipadress. This had the effect that 2 machines had the same ipadress.. Every once a while my SMC adsl modem caused some traffic, which confused the router on the other side (of my ISP) causing it to drop all traffic which was destined to the ASUS router and send it to the SMC adsl modem. Kinda stupid of me. I won't be returning it afterall I guess..

I also have that problem. Only that in my case I have to turn the AP off and back on again in order to use internet. It is still accessible through the web interface but doesn't allow any connections to the internet anymore.

And I don't think that it's only a wireless thing since the same happens if I produce many connections on its LAN ports. I use it in AP mode since I already have a linux router which has a DHCP server and which is connected to my cable modem.

I had to put my brother's PC and mine back into the little switch we had used before I bought the Asus, otherwise I would have to reboot the AP every 2-3 hours. Now I only use the AP for my Powerbook and still have to reset from time to time.

Browsing some eMule forums I read that many routers/AP's have problems with many connections spawning too fast so I wouldn't even know what I should buy instead of the 500g (should I consider sending it back after those 5 days it has been in use so far). I guess it's due to the relatively slow hardware (compared to a PC) running a software OS. It just cannot handle too many connections.

Cheers,
ArKay

But if i only use emule the router keeps the connection up, it just can't handle emule and azureus... in firmware 1.7, because 1.6 works ok (for me), so the problem isn't hardware, it's the firmware. I sent a "bug report" to asus, i'm waiting for an answer...

Good luck. I already opened this issue with them (case #186008), and got back a response to check my cables and reinstall my NIC drivers. They have put the case into a pending close state. I doubt you'll have any better luck.
It happens to me with just Azureus running, whether eMule/eDonkey is running or not...

okay.. if this really seems to be a big problem

i want to test it myself.. the only problem is i don't even know how to @#% setup eMule  sucky serverlists etc you need.. i don't have any..

if I encounter the problem, i'll have a little chat with asus about it or maybe we can fix it ourself

Forget eMule/eDonkey. It happens just running Azureus. Install it from sourcefore.net, and then go download a few torrents from suprnova.org.
It'll lockup within a couple of hours. Don't forget to port forward incoming connections on 6881.

Hello,

I had some similar problem. I use a Asus notebook (l5800c) with integrated wireless LAN adapter and a WL500g with 1.7.5.6-CR5. First I tried to use WPA with WPA wireless security update from Windows XP. But from time to time my connection hungs.
After that I decided not to use the WPA part but only WEP128 encryption.
The same problem occured.
Last week I "discovered" an option within Windows to disable "automatic WLAN management" (by Windows). Now I am using only the ASUS (propriety) WLAN drivers with WEP128 encryption (WPA is not possible unfortunately) and it is as stable as a rock (already 5 days without problems !).
I hope some people will find this information usefull en possibly will fix some same kind of problem. Good luck !

Well, it seems there's a problem with UPNP then... Maybe another solution could be to set UPNP suport in the router disabled.

For ones, who has experienced problems with eMule and similar. Let't track the problem (but as seems to me actually there are number of problems). So, once your connection get dropped connect to wl500g and check the uptime. It's probably just rebooting during this lost of connection. Also, please clarify: have you experienced problems with wired or wireless connection or both (please be sure to check this before reporting).

The router does not reboot for me. In my case, the WAN just completely shuts down, and never recovers. The LAN is fine, both wired and wireless, but nothing can access the Internet. I log in to the router, do a DHCP "Release" to my ISP, wait a few seconds, and then do a "Renew". That gets me back online until the next WAN shutdown occurs.

This was happening to me frequently using Azureus (P2P Bit Torrent client), and even more so when I used eMule/eDonkey at the same time. Some people reported that downgrading the firmware back to 1.6 fixed the issue for them. I tried that, but no change for me at all. Recently, I replaced the cable between the cable modem and the router with a much shorter, much heavier shielded cable. This has improved it greatly, as I can go much longer between disconnects, but it does still happen...

:) magic. In fact it does not help you. How you've configured you modem? In short, who is providing dhcp - your modem or ISP (if you're not sure or someone else is configuring your modem then just say "don't know")?

For my case, when i'm using BT and the tranfer rate is higher than 300KB the wan port is easily to die. (I say easily because sometime it doesn't disconnect when the tranfer rate reach 300KB or over. But if transfer rate meet 300KB, it always make the wan port die.)
um....
May be I can say if the file is busy, (may be the tranfer rate is high or a lot of connection) the router will be die and keep going to die on every 5-15 mins after resume. if the file is not busy, the router can work very stable, although the file size is over 1GB.

I'm using a WLAN to connect.
Using a VDSL modem and pppoe connect with my ISP(the sale said 10/10 mb connection)

Because I'm not at home until this weekend. I'll copy the log when i reach this problem

OK, it just happened again. My uptime still states 1 day 13 hours.
You ask for my system log, starting with the words "unable to open..."
Is there a way to turn up the logging? My entire log is as follows:

The WLAN lockup occurred at 15:06, the last 2 lines show me manually doing a release and renew, which gets me going again.
My ISP provides a reserved DHCP IP address for me. In other words, based on my MAC address, the router always gets the same IP from my ISP.
I am currently running ASUS 1.7.5.9 firmware.

I have exactly the same problem as described in this thead. It has nothing to do with the renew/release of DHCP lease, neither is it related to transfer rate.

It's something about the number of sockets open when running Bittorrent.

Possibly the firewall log filling memory as Oleg has said but I can't find out how big that is or how to turn it off.

I have the same problem when using the 1.7 firmware. From times to times (minutes) it justs reboots himself. The uptime starts from zero, the wired machines loose their ip's and the wireless ssid disapears for a few seconds. The router has even reseted to default factory settings once! :s
With 1.6 firmware everything goes well.

Any solution?

Guys, seems I've found the reason for some stangeness resulting in wan connection dies issue at least in one case - when pptp/pppoe reconnects in this case internal dns may stop responding. This only occures with firmwares starting with 1.7.5.6-4 as seems. 1.7.5.9-2 will contain a fix for this.

I have not got that log enabled. I'm also not using PPOE or PPTP.

same problem as Lurks... I am directly connect to an Ethernet network at my dorm, and when multiple connections are created (or high bandwidth is present), the connection is lost. Don't know if it's the DNS problem, because I can't ping IP's either... have to do a hard reboot on it to get the connection back.

I also am not using PPOE or PPTP, and the log is not enabled. This also happens to me when I downgrade back to 1.6 as well. Azureus kills it every time. So often, in fact, I have written a shell script to automate the release and renew of my IP which gets me going again without rebooting the router:
----------------------------------------------------------------
wget --http-user=admin --http-passwd=cabintech -q -O /dev/null "http://192.168.0.1/apply.cgi?current_page=Main_GStatus_Content.asp&next_page=default+value&next_host=192.168.0.1&sid_list=default+value&action_mode=Update&action_script=dhcpc_release"

sleep 1

wget --http-user=admin --http-passwd=cabintech -q -O - http://192.168.0.1/Main_GStatus_Content.asp" | grep PPPConnection_x_WANIPAddress | sed -e 's/.*value="\([^"]*\).*/\1/g'

sleep 5

wget --http-user=admin --http-passwd=cabintech -q -O /dev/null "http://192.168.0.1/apply.cgi?current_page=Main_GStatus_Content.asp&next_page=default+value&next_host=192.168.0.1&sid_list=default+value&action_mode=Update&action_script=dhcpc_renew"

And I have the same problem:

I use the Motorola SB5100E, the firmware of the wl500g is 1.7.5.6 (original). The WAN port dies after 24 - 48 hours. Instead that it comes back after 20-40 secs, I have to restart the router. I dont have any logs enabled...

Its a kinda irritating thingy and i hope this will be solved very soon. Its a good device, but very anoying. If it wont be solved, I am also gonna switch to Linksys...

I get many ip adresses from my new dsl isp. So I connect the router and a commputer to the modem (the modem has many ports). When I try to transfer files between me and the computer behind the wl500g, it's slow ~4.5mb/s, and after a while the wanport dies. The internal network behind the router works, the external starts as soon as I renew the wanports ip-adress.

I'm not running PPOE or PPTP or anything special, just dynamic ip.

Interesting is that I never had this issues before until made an reset of the nvram via telnet.

I've tried 1.6.5.3 and 1.7.9, both default and Oleg.
It doesn't make any difference.

Hy

I also get the same problem. If I reduce the WAN port settings to 10Mbps and the wireless connection to 11Mbps only, I get slower transfer rate (as expected), but this problem takes longer to occur. If I work under these conditions normally I can transmit 2 ou 3 GB of info through the WAN port, but if I use 100Mbps for WAN and 54Mbps for the wireless connection usually I can't even finish a 700MB transfer through the WAN port.
I've already tried fixed ip, dhcp and all logs and firewalls are disabled.
The router to which I connect the WAN port of the WL500g is an Alcatel Speedtouch 510.
The problem disapear as soon as I renew the DHCP lease or if working with static ip, as soon as I reboot the modem.
I've also tried almost all firmware since 1.6...

Same boat as you but I wouldn't suggest linksys. D-Link and Buffalo routers are both very stable.

Annoying I just moved from a Bufallo router to this Asus. The Bufallo gave me zero problems, I just wanted the extra features of the Asus. That'll teach me.

It's crashed again. I've had enough, it's being replaced by a 3COM and the WL-500G can go on ebay for the next sucker...

I've been having the same problems as described above, with the Wireless connection just disappearing unless the router was rebooted.

I've upgraded to the standard 1.7.5.9 firmware available here (wherever it came from) and it appears to have resolved the problem I was having with 1.7.5.6.

The router has been up and stable for 4 days without a reboot. I've successfully copied 6Gb folders between the LAN and laptop over wireless, and left eMule running overnight over wireless. No connection drops experienced.

Well, my 30 day return policy is coming due, and my patience has run out as well. So, I'm boxing it up and shipping it back. For those of you experiencing the same WAN disconnect with file sharing programs (Azureus, eMule/eDonkey, etc), I suggest you do the same, as this won't be fixed anytime soon. I've tried opening a case with Asus, but to no avail. It's a real shame, this would have been a nice router.

I've raised the issue several times with Asus' European headquarters at a management level. First they said they'd get Taiwan to look into it. Now they're just blanking me.

I've just kicked out a post to a wide range of UK distributors and retailers, telling them not to stock the unit.

Shame, it could have been the best domestic router on the market if they cared enough.

This is interesting though.

First my router works fine, not the speedproblems on wan, or the port dies issue either. Everything is fine.

My friend changes some settings, router is unable to be restored. Some guys here made a special firmware for me (big thanks) which enabled telnet so I could reset the nvram. I restored the firmware after that.

Now I got both the speedbug and the port dies issue.

I also had all this problems with the WAN port, as you can see from my prevoius post.
I managed to work around this anoying situation by following this steps: first I set up the wl500g as router only. Then I disabled all the DHCP and DNS servers and after that I set up the ip adress of the wl500g on the LAN as one of the adresses of the network the speedtouch provided (I use the network 10.0.0.0/24 and set up the wl500g as 10.0.0.254) and connected the speedtouch 510 I own to one of the LAN (you read right, LAN) ports. All the DHCP and DNS is done by the speedtouch router.

This way the connection never freezed again. You can also leave the ip adress for the WAN port blank.

As everyone remembers, acording to the previous post I set up my speedtouch as the DHCP and DNS server for my network. This is true, but now I use the wl500g just as an AP. I switched to AP mode and this way, the speedtouch can also manage the ip adress of the wl500g (if setup to get the LAN ip by DHCP). Also, the printer server works in this mode and the router itself acts as a switching hub, so I can use all the LAN (plus the WAN according to the manual) as if they were ports from the speedtouch. As I don't need the firewall and router functions, this setup is great for me and simplifies the network setup I use (only one subnet).

I hope that this post is useful to someone...

I got Asus Wl500G since last 2 months and i am
perticularly disappointed with the Wan port dying
probleme. Its very annoying. i am visiting your forum
very punctually. I also tried the last firmware which
i downloaded from your site 1.8.1.1

till now in all firmwares the log files were not
comprehensible. but in the new firmware, the logs are
explicite !!!!
When my wan port dies, i got this message in my log.
approx every 24 hrs...
"Jul 10 01:43:56 dhcp client: deconfig: lease is
lost"
only thing i have to do is release and renew my dhcp
IP on status windows. In static Wan Ip mode i can
renew, i have to restart.
my wan speed can go upto 5Mbit ;) for 3-4 hrs without any problems. May be the WL500 does not supprots the dhcp ip lease renewal correctly ?

Now what want to know that is it possible to
personalise a firmware that renews IP automatically
whenever we get "DHCP deconfig lease is lost" .
can we do it via a script which will start with the router.
and do everything automatically. I am not a hardcore programmer in linux or c - c++ so it may be difficult for me. :(

can you find out a solution? please help

thank you very much.

Firmware is requesting lease renewal correctly. The problem as is seems is with the et driver.

Isn't it possible to reconfigure a forced renewal every 4-6 hrs with udhcpc to try to solutionthe problem , that will let us give a possibility to reinitialise the network card?

What router have you got now m8? Is it working ok with P2P? I am one more affected by the WAN port dies.
Is it of any good to activate the logs ("Enable log for acces from WAN")? I am on firmware 1.7.5.9.(3) by Oleg.

How do you have your Wireless settings? I am using WEP 128 ATM. UPnP is off because that service was dying also (it died alone, the rest of the router was still working ok). The only value that I am not sure is the "Enable Frame Bursting" found in Wireless / Advanced. I have it in ON. Can this be producing any conflicts related to the WAN port dying?

I have to point also that after renewing my IP ( from the "Status" router's page) my WAN port works again.

Everyone with WAN port die issue is advised to turn on wondershaper, this could workaround a problem.

The thing looks promising, but I have still some doubts about how to activate it. I recommend you to read this thread and the WIKI page. I hope we all can put to rest the WAN port dying issues with the help of this nice feature.

Thanks Oleg for your useful firmwares, without your work and the work of the other persons in this forum this router would be only an expensive paperweight, ARE YOU LISTENING ASUS?
