For those who don't like the text mode of Telnet, there is a simple monitoring utility for Windows: http://www.mujweb.cz/www/jirka36/aptest2.zip. Thanks to some people from CZFREE.net (http://www.czfree.net/forum/showthread.php?postid=78786#post78786) forum this utility was written in about 30 minutes. Don't expect too much but I think it could be pretty useful for antenna positioning. It will work with latest patched firmware 1.6.5.3-2 for WL-500g from Oleg. firmware 1.6.5.3-2 (http://wl500g.info/showthread.php?s=&threadid=135) :)

Nice Utility, althought he user interface is somewhat "Spartian". I have been to the mentioned Czech site, however my Czech is as bad as my Russian, so I will post my experiences here.
* When refresh rate set to maxium the program will/can crash ("-4 is not a valid integer value")
* There is no control to select a different AP when more than 1 AP is available, even not with the AP field (looking at the terminal output it is screwing up the AP name).

:) Yes I know, the utility is a bit buggy at the moment and I have already reported the problems to the forum. Perhaps I will get a source code from author and will be able to fix the issues soon. ;)

Update - the source code was not released but some update was promised by Author - let's wait... :) In the meantime there's a new link to slightly debugged version above.

Well, so please use the old link to previous version... In fact there's no difference - there is a serious bug still. Unfortunately Author did not release source codes nor any other update yet and I don't have time to write down the similar software from the beginning. :(

Hello everybody who have been looking for a GUI scan tool for ASUS wl-500g. I found on the Internet just one called AP-test2. Because it was not perfect I created my own tool based again on Telnet and wl scan. It works only with custom firmware, i.e. Oleg's. You can download the latest version here (http://wl500g.info/attachment.php?attachmentid=755&d=1141677917).

It's fine, but when I change host IP (I have another), it is always connecting to 192.168.1.1. Please, can you fix it? And it is possible to remember this another IP? (e.g. via some config file) Thx.

The latest version is here. Much lower CPU load, more stable due to ICS package from Overbyte. Last modified 06/03/2006 21:51. (old files removed)

Hi, very good job, very good utility for every WL-5xx owner. But one question: Is normal this program is freezing under Win98?

Liszka
25-01-2006, 18:58
It is possible. The tool has not been tested under Windows 98. I just run it in XP. Maybe later I can test it also in 98...

Seems to hang under Win2k as well...

(It's still a very good job ! :-) Thanks !)

Did I need another FW version?

Hello,
I am not at home these days, so I can't test it but it could be caused by working mode of the router - is it station?

did you mean "Extended Mode:" ? it is set to "AP or WDS"

I tried AsusMon, but am not sure how to use it ... ??

Does it have to run on a PC connected over wireless to the AP (WL-300g in my case), or on any PC in the LAN (wired) ??

I only get 'Disconnected' on the status line :-(

Please open telnet connection to your WL500GX, log in and type "wl scan" and "wl scanresults" and send me the text of the session. I will look at it. Or enable logging in the tool and send the log file created. Thanks

The router must be in Client mode (Extended mode "Station") first or you have to change the mode via Telnet to client and back (but AP of course stops working for a while):

wl ap 0
wl scan
wl scanresults
wl ap 1

or

wl ap 0
wl scan
sleep 1
wl scanresults
wl ap 1

if it works please let me know. I will soon adapt the tool to handle different working modes.

Liszka
07-03-2006, 19:03
Here is new version for AP mode that switches automatically to client mode and back. Note: it interrupts AP mode. (old file removed)

Elron
07-03-2006, 22:02
now it is working, thx

Can you add the funktion to scan with "passive"? (wl scan -t passive)
(is not important but would be nice :D )

and what is the difference between "station" and "AP" mode?

Liszka
09-03-2006, 20:44
I hope this is final version: for all modes, with passive scanning option.
Details about operation modes are described well in other threads.

New version now:) now with support of the latest firmware I hope...

What program language did you use ?

Best regards

Liszka
10-03-2006, 21:37
I use Delphi 2005. The best choice for fast programming Win32 applications with GUI... But older Delphi versions were more user friendly... Telnet interface is ICS from Overbyte.

Thanks a lot. Will you provide the sources also ?
Maybe we can share some knowledge about thread programming...
I like your tool and have some idea to add some enhanced features.

I tried it with my WL-500W and it says "can't connect", there is no log. :(

The same here, I got Wl-500gP (Oleg's FW 1.9.2.7-8 (2007-10-30)), and wl scan is of 1.0.1.0 version from 9 March 2006. I use WinXP.

I enter correct information:
host: 10.9.8.1
user name: admin
password: (my pwd, cannot tell you that, but it is not long and I am sure I am typing it correctly)

After a few seconds from clicking "Connect" I get: "Wrong username or password" and the password disappears from the box!!! If I use another IP, the password stays in.

Telnet with mentioned credentials works OK, I successfully log in.

Liszka, dont you know where the problem could be? The program doesn't generate any log even if I set it up to make one.

Maybe Delphi 2005 is the best choice, but probably not in this case...

Liszka
28-12-2007, 22:31
I must answer that the problem is not in Delphi itself but in the code :D . I know about it already some time but only few people sent their complaints. Now, already 3 people reported the problem and I decided to fix it. Give me several days please and you will get an improved version.

Jack_Brody
28-12-2007, 22:48
OK, looking forward to your next version. I'll test it immediately then.

Liszka
12-01-2008, 01:26
Please find the new version on the previous page. Let me know if it works better than before. Thanks.

Jack_Brody
12-01-2008, 10:51
Ok, so I have just tried new version (WL SCAN 1.1) from 2008 . I put in correct IP adress, username and password, after clicking on Connect I can see in the lower bar:

Connecting
Logging
Authenticating
GettingApMode

and then a window pops up with "ERROR: Could not get AP mode."

That's all for now.

Hmmm...I've also checked the "log to file" checkbox, but no log has been created. If you somehow get it to work, I will give you the log in the future. It would be probably much more of help for you.

I still have the same version of Oleg's FW as I wrote a few posts ago. And WinXP SP2.

Jack_Brody
12-01-2008, 10:59
The same happens no matter whether or not I check the "passive" checkbox.

Liszka
12-01-2008, 19:34
The log file is saved to "log.txt" after closing the tool. I can't test with 1.9.2.7-8 firmware now. The log usually looks like this if AP mode is off:

Asus login:
username
Password:

[username@Asus root]$
wl ap
ap is 0 (off)
[username@Asus root]$
wl scan -t passive
[username@Asus root]$
wl scanresults
SSID: "\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00\x00"
Mode: Managed RSSI: -57 dBm noise: -99 dBm Channel: 1
BSSID: 00:17:3F:07:C9:24 Capability: ESS WEP ShortSlot
Supported Rates: [ 1(b) 2(b) 5.5(b) 11(b) 6 9 12 18 24 36 48 54 ]
WPA:
multicast cipher: TKIP
unicast ciphers(1): TKIP
AKM Suites(1): WPA-PSK
No WPA Capabilities advertised...etc.

Please send the log file to me or connect manually over Telnet and send the log of the session. Thanks :)

Jack_Brody
13-01-2008, 13:59
OK, after two connection tries the log contain following:

asus login:
admin
Password:

[admin@asus root]$
w
l ap
1
[admin@asus root]$
asus login:
admin
Password:

[admin@asus root]$
wl ap
1
[admin@asus root]$

When I connect manually via Telnet, I know how to obtain the list of neighbor wi-fi networks. I use these commands:

wl ap 0 (switch off the AP mode)
wl scan -t passive
wl scanresults
wl ap 1 (switching on the AP mode)

So I think if wlscan used the "wl ap 0" command first, it wouldn't have those problems. Just an idea.

Liszka
13-01-2008, 16:39
There is a new version on the previous page that should support the latest firmware (I hope). The difference is a more tolerant rule for reading AP mode (setting 'wl ap 0' had been included already earlier, the problem was caused by different format of the reply to 'wl ap' in different versions of firmware).

Jack_Brody
13-01-2008, 17:29
Yes!!!! Now it is working like a charm!! :) It connects in and then repeatedly scans the air and updates the table.

Perfect. Thank you Liszka, good work!

Jack_Brody
13-01-2008, 22:26
Well, one thing: when scanning the AIR LED is blinking. When I click on "Disconnect", the LED stays unlit (!). After restart of the whole router the AIR lights up again.

I cannot confirm if this is a problem (if that means the radio is switched off) as I don't have any wi-fi client device to try at the time.

Liszka
14-01-2008, 18:12
Please check again the log file, whether 'wl ap 1' command is sent before disconnecting. It should if the router had been in AP mode before the scanning started (indicated as the result of 'wl ap' in the beginning of the log).

Jack_Brody
14-01-2008, 21:27
Yes, the last command issued is "wl ap 1". Anyway, AIR always turns off.
