HP LaserJet 1000/1005/1020 not working: sort of solution

I have a problem with my WL-500g router. It can't recognize my HP LaserJet 1020, altough I saw this device as WORKING in the compatibility list.

Firmware: 1.9.2.7

I've tried everything but still can't get it working, please help me.
I'm using Oleg's firmware 1.9.2.7-6b.

Might sound stupid, is it the printer's firmware that causes the problem?
Anyway what's the difference between model 1010 and 1020, they're almost the same, and 1010 proved to work for a friend of mine on the same router.

You can try to connect the printer to PC, print something and then to reconnect it to router. Perhaps it will work until you power off the printer or until some error condition occurs (paper out detected etc.).

1010 does not need a firmware, that's why it works...

Sorry, I do not have 1020, so I could not help you. Theoretically you could add firmware loader to the firmware to make it work.

Well, bad news for you my friend...

The LaserJet 1020 printing logic is in its printing driver, not in the printer. The so called "processor" on 1020 just dumps on the paper data prepared by the driver. This is what HP calls "Host-based printing", and also the reason why this laser is so cheap.

I had similar lousy experience with my old Lexmark which was flawlessly printing on Windows 98, but once I switched to Windows 2000 there was no appropriate driver for it because, as Lexmark nicely put it, it was an obsolete model with no plan for driver updates.

Bottom line: hp LJ 1020 will not print through 500g/gx.

To print through 500g/gx you need a printer which support a form of printer language (PCL, PS...), and preferably has more than 2 Mb of memory (complex pages with pictures or just large pictures will not be properly printed even if 1020 is connected to a computer with a proper driver). Needles to say, LaserJet 1010 has both.

Thank you for your help! I'm a bit disappointed...

I bought this printer a few weeks ago and wanted to connect it to a router or a device which enables using it over the air.
Then even if I buy a stand alone print server (Linksys or any other) it wouldn't work, would it? Shame on HP... I don't want to plug the USB into my notebook every time I want to print, needless to say, I wanted to use it via wireless.:(

Still you could check if HP themself offer printserver that support their 1020 ...

I also bought a HP LaserJet 1020 some time ago. And now that we have moved to a new address, so I wanted to connect the HP LaserJet 1020 to the Asus WL-500g.

And now see that it isn't going to work :mad:

So there is really no way it is going to work?

I now have the firmware on the usb stick (after connecting a usb hub to my router). And added the line "tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/start_hp1020" (wich contains the line "/tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat /tmp/harddisk/etc/hp1020/sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0") to "/usr/local/sbin/post-mount"

But this doesn't work.

When i run "/usr/local/sbin/post-mount" after the router has booted the printer reacts (always tested after off/on switching of the printer)

I haven't got anything under /dev/usb, it's totally empty. The printer is connected to the usb, but when I run the command above, it says:

Error: No such file or directory: can't open '/dev/usb/lp0'

Of course it can't open it because it isn't there. WHY?

If I try with /dev/lp0 it says:
Error: Invalid argument: GET_DEVICE_ID on '/dev/lp0'

maybe because this lp0 stands for the LPT printer, doesn't it?

...after 5 hours of strugling...

I've downloaded a modified version of the "foo2zjs" driver (tar.gz from linuxprinting.org). It contains the same firmware for the HP 1020 that Oleg mentioned (I think you actually copied it from there, didn't you.)

I booted up Suse 9.3 and compiled the foo2zjs package (specially made for HP1020), pushed the printer in the USB port of the machine (that is running Suse), Suse (I think via UDEV) recognized the device on the USB.Then I did a

cat hp1020.img > /dev/usb/lp0....
The printer started to init itself again as if it were switched on. Cool...
then

usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0
and voila, the new firmware was on the printer, saying FWVER:200411xx

Then with the new firmware I could print a test page in SuSe 9.3 using Cups, then pulling the plug and inserting it into the Windows machine, tried to print....worked also flawlessly.

Than (WITHOUT switching the printer off) I put the USB plug into the router. The same symptom remained:

the error messages are the same as before, even with the new firmware.

That can be the reason why the p910nd daemon can't create /dev/usb/lp0, because the router can't even access the printer on the USB port.

So what now??

These errors are hardware problem, so you should fix them first BEFORE playing with software. If you use a hub, replace it or connect directly. If you do not use a hub, try different port on the wl500g deluxe. If it still does not work, replace a cable.

I bought a WL-500G Deluxe just a few hours ago. It recognizes the printer right after connecting...VERY GOOD. All the previous post are working now:
- can upload firmware and check version with usb_printerid, printing works well.


One slight problem is that GJAman's method for changing the firmware right when the printer is switched on, doesn't work for me. When I run /usr/local/sbin/post-mount manually it works like an angel.

It seems that the post-mount script doesn't run when switching on/off the printer (or connecting).

The router recognizes the printer every time I switch it on, it assigns address to it, so it is aware of the printer.

What should I do to automate firmware loading? How can I force the post-mount script to run when switching on the printer?

Right. Post-mount is executed after usb drive is get mounted.

No way with post mount. Instead you should replace hotplug handler using smg like this:

create a /usr/local/sbin/hotplug

it seems like the kernel doesn't start /sbin/hotplug (or whatever is in /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug).

I've read much about hotplug on http://linux-hotplug.sourceforge.net/ but couldn't get closer to the solution.

Somehow the system recognizes the printer when turning on, because it refreshes /proc/bus/usb/devices...

I'm stucked with this...

Please post messages after power off/on. They should contain something like this:

This means, the /sbin/hotplug should be called for new device. Just checked with a small hotplug replacement and it's indeed called.

3. The most important, while I power on/off/on the printer, it doesn't work anymore. Some errors as below:

I've tried to make an ASUS WL-500g to work with a HP LaserJet 1020, but I'm not able to make work reliably.

I've tried to implement some of the ideas discussed here, but it simply doesn't work in a reliable way - the firmware is not loaded to the printer.

My perception is that post-boot will be executed after the booting is finished. The post-boot script only waits for some seconds in order to make the AP to be online.
The post-mount script should be executed after the printer is detected (turned on), but it doesn't execute.

Do some of you have any ideas to solve printing with ASUS WL-500g and HP LaserJet 1020? Can it be done in a different way, e.g. using CUPS (is CUPS able to upload the firmware to the printer since the driver is installed at the client?)?

Any suggestions to help me solve this issues will be appreciated :-)

i'm a little confused -- the official documents say that the LaserJet 1010 only supports host-based printing (and that only the LJ 1015 speaks PCL 5).

I have HP LaserJet 1018 so I am in trouble (lesson not to buy cheap things). By reading this thread I found that it is possible to make printer work with 500gP, but now I haven't any USB stick or hard disk.. Maybe there is a way to "include" laserjet 1018 support directly to 500gP firmware ?
Had problems with this printer in Ubuntu but they are already solved, now it would be nice to have it working without host computer.

i just got a new WL500g.Premium, and it seems the LaserJet 1100 is working, with a Parallel to USB adapter. With the Wl500g, it didn't work both directly attached to the Parallel port, as well as to the USB port with the adapter.

I'm running dd-wrt firmware on my wl500g but I'm considering using Oleg's firmaware since the dd-wrt seems not to support my HP LJ1022. As far as I can see there seems to be a workaround to make the printer usable using Oleg's firmware. My question is the following (I'm not very proficient in programming or anything like that):

- Does the latest Oleg's firmware support the 1022 out ot the box, ie, just install the firmware plug the printer and were good to go? By reading this thread it seems that I should use a USB stick to load the firmware (how to do it is something a can't understand), and I can't understand how this is done.

- for those that have tried DD-WRT, do you think Oleg's firmware is better?

Just tried, and it's working fine :) Firmware needs to be downloaded to printer via hotplug.sh, and bidirectional support shoud be unchecked in windows printer properties.
LJ 1000 is connected by some kind of usb-to-serial cable, probably this is confusing router and windows driver. If you leave bidirectional printing checked, result is blocked printer port on win and stuck printer on router. Only restarting helps.

did the trick. 1020 returns notthing, it seems driver is not using this (working) capability. 1000 blocks widows port & printer regardless of -b option if bidirectional printing is checked in port settings. Finally I left it unchecked, for me it works fine that way.
If printer runs out of paper, simply unplug/plug it from router. 1020 resumes printing, 1000 is resetted.

I am not familiar with Linux, hotplug and fstab does not tell me too much. Can you help me how could I send the firmware to a HP1020. I have a 500gPremium with the original firmware and with an USB HDD. I have downloaded usb_printerid and sihp1020.dl to the HDD but I do not know where to put (which folder) these files and where to include the following command. chmod +x usb_printerid

I used only the web setup page of the router.
Do I need to update the firmware to Oleg's one first?

First, you'll need to flash your router with Oleg's firmware. Then you can get dirty and start tinkering with asus box. It will be good idea to get somewhat familliar with Linux, it is more fun when you know what you are doing :)

I will asume you have PC with Windows connected to router. Telnet and log to Asus, then make folder for firmware, hotplug etc.

First of all thanks to all of you for very simple and clear steps that make it work. It's great you presented it in a way a newcomer can understand!

Yesterday I've been struggling to make it work using the early instructions. It didn't work until I created the pre-boot file. I have HP 1020 and WL-500gP v2.

Now it works if I power off and power on the printer. Apparently it works if I power cycle the router with the printer on (firmware is still in the printer). Although it didn't work after I turned off everything for the night and then turned it back on in the morning (printer and router). And it looked differently, it wasn't just ignoring my printing requests silently but giving me messages like "local downlevel document failed to print".

After I turned off the printer and turned it on again, it works. Can it be the the hotplug works but post-boot or pre-boot do not?

the /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug file has the necessary line in it.
my /usr/local/sbin has pre-boot, post-boot, hotplug.sh, usb_printerid and sihp1020.dl files.

It is still unclear to me how the post-boot file is used. Is this /usr/local/sbin a special directory and post-boot and pre-boot some special file names that are executed automatically?

The problem is this: The printer 1005, all of the instructions executed.
Switch on the printer, perform
/tmp/usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat /tmp/sihpP1005.dl > /dev/usb/lp0
(this printer pogudel and subsided). Also try the file sihp1005.dl - with the printer does not even boos.
Then when you send a print job windows gives an error that the press has failed in the task list, the page is assigned the status of "error".

It works now, but in windows 7 ( I haven't tried in xp/vista) the printer looses bidirectional support. Therefore I have to activate it before every print. Does it happen to somebody else? Is there a simple solution, as well?

I have tried to find to solution for this problem.

your problem is that printer isn't recognized by router. I guess you have wl500gPv2. Try the firmware from http://code.google.com/p/wl500g/ It is known to be more compatible with usb devices.

I can use the printer directly connected to my pc perfectly. I get no errors in Windows XP home and Linux Ubuntu 9.10. The printer works very well.
The printer is not connected with an usb hub.

you get no one positive detection on usb bus. The problem with usb flash drive supports my suggestion that you have hardware related problem. It looks like usb on the router isn't working at all.

I have tested the router with an HP Laserjet 1010. I have connected de HP 1010 with an USB cable to the router. De router recognized the HP laserjet 1010 immediately without any commands with Telnet! Then I have maked an new networkprinter under Windows XP and Ubuntu 9.10. There where on both operation systems no errors. Printing was no problem!

I have tested the internal chip from the 1010 in de 1020. The printer didn't work. Also tested the internal chip from the 1020 in the 1010 but then I get also problem's (printers doesn't work at al)

So the only solution was to exchange the printers to "solve" this problem.
Now I have exchanged the HP Laserjet 1020 with a HP Laserjet 1010. The 1020 and 1010 are using the same toner so that maked it easy. :)

Well, it's possible for HP LJ 1000/1005/1020.

1000/1005 seems to have firmware which fits to flashfs, 1020 needs external usb drive to store firmware, as it's large.

You've to download right firmware sihp1000.dl/sihp1005.dl/sihp1020.dl to wl500g and upload to printer like this:



cd /tmp

chmod +x usb_printerid
./usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 | grep -q FWVER || cat sihp1020.dl > /dev/usb/lp0


This should load a firmware to the 1020 and it should work until power off or something. Check this.

In fact, someone should write a hotplug script to automate firmware loading...

I successfully setup Kubuntu 12.10, and Windows 7 to use HP 1020 via Oleg WL500gp V2:

Kubuntu 12.10:
Driver: HP LaserJet 1020 Foomatic/foo2zjs-z1 (recommended)
Connection: lpd://192.168.1.1/LPRServer

Windows 7:
Like Windows XP, BUT don't forget to uncheck two way communication in the printer properties unless it will continuously repeat the printing job.

Now my printer is working very good. If you have any problem with your printer better re-install and check your printer it may work better...
