ASUS RT-AC56U Router Preview

This AC does more than cool you down, it speeds you up. We’ve seen many of the 802.11ac
products ASUS currently has on offer, and soon this new addition will be joining the family.

This is the RT-AC56U, a mid-upper range networking device that’s loaded with goodies to make
the most of the latest in Wi-Fi. Just to recap quickly, 802.11ac takes over from 802.11n as the
fastest and most powered Wi-Fi standard. You can check out the official protocols on the IEEE site.
And get excited about the RT-AC56U…

The RT-AC56U is quite the looker, maintaining the black diamond design previous performance
routers from ASUS showcased. Of course, the antennas are internal, which means a sleeker
device, less interference and, in my case, nothing for headphone cables to get snared on,
reducing the likelihood of mishaps.

http://www.techinstyle.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/asus-ac56u-3-545x378.jpg

In terms of speed, the RT-AC56U has two bands (2.4GHz/5GHz) that concurrently top at 1167Mbit/s.
While not the fastest in the ASUS networking arsenal, this is more than enough to cover you even
if you’re on a rare true Gigabit connection. Inside we find a fifth generation Broadcom chipset that
is at the heart of 802.11ac optimisation.

You can see quite clearly that the RT-AC56U has both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, so connect away:
printers, external storage, even 3G/4G adapters. This is more than a router, it can easily become
a server to share resources, something ASUS networking products are very keen on doing.

http://www.techinstyle.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/asus-ac56u-1-545x326.jpg

The internal antennas are supported by ASUS AiRadar signal amplification and shaping technology,
which we’ve talked about before as well. This nifty touch has an intelligent algorithm built into the
CPU that modulates signal power based on how many devices you have paired with the RT-AC56U,
how far each one is, how much bandwidth each requires at any given time, and what letter of the
alphabet the device name starts with. Just kidding about that last one. On a serious note, ASUS
engineers tell me in real world test conditions AiRadar can extend Wi-Fi coverage 150% compared
to an exactly-specced router that doesn’t have it, though of course your results may vary.

http://www.techinstyle.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/asus-ac56u-21-545x300.jpg

Naturally, the ASUS AiCloud app is bundled and supported, so you can use your iOS and Android
devices to access the RT-AC56U from pretty much anywhere, share stuff from external storage
hooked to it with other people. You can also access, stream, upload, and download content, but
remember you do need external storage for this – that’s why the USB ports come in so handy.

http://www.techinstyle.tv/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/asus-ac56u-4-545x427.jpg

The RT-AC56U should be launching in the very near future, with more details forthcoming.
We’ll keep you posted, so watch this space and our Twitter feed!

So is this an ARM cpu powered router Omega?

Dunno about Asus going ARM.
It's not like if MIPS doesn't have any multi core designs. In fact I believe they had one before ARM, a proper multi core design, not multi cpu on a chip.

HOW TO OVERCLOCK RT-AC56U

1. Navigate to http://192.168.1.1/Tools_RunCmd.asp

2. OverClock: run in the cmd window, copy paste/enter:

nvram set clkfreq=1200,800
nvram commit && reboot
- this will set CPU clock to 1200MHz and memory to 800 (for comparison - the stock is 800/533)

Stock:

nvram set clkfreq=800,533
nvram commit && reboot
Warning: your router may hang at this point. Let it stay for couple minutes, if it does not come back, power cycle.
If you cannot get the router back after power cycling, follow to restore procedure outlined above.

3. After successful reboot, you can check the clocks in the UI: http://192.168.1.1/Tools_Sysinfo.asp

# cat /proc/dmu/temperature
I am seeing 58 degrees (that's with the cooling) BCM4708A is officially rated for 1000 MHz, so ASUS seems to deliberately
underclocking it for AC56U at 800MHz; my guess is that they are keeping full clocks for AC68

nvram set clkfreq=1000,667
nvram commit && reboot
So far I cannot find clear guidance on what are the safe temperatures for the CPU
You just re-affirmed my suspicion - your router is simply overheating (at 80 degrees).
AC56U does not have internal fan, so the only hope convection cooling (right, with those tiny holes) or add-on cooling.

My suggestion: if you can, remove the rear cover (no one sees it in the closet anyway, right?) and you can use standard 80mm
case fan just standing few inch away from the router connected to 5-7 volt DC power source (does not have to be USB).
Lower than 12V power will reduce the RPM and noise while still providing sufficient cooling.

Before any overclocking, try to cool off your router to sub-60 and measure performance with VPN on - see if there is any improvement...

6. Memory: used in Asus RT-AC56U - 256 MB (ESMT M15F2G16128A) which is according to M15F2G16128A.pdf (http://www.esmt.com.tw/DB/manager/upload/M15F2G16128A.pdf)
is DDR3 capable of 667/800Mhz! I am going to try 667MHz now. so I applied 1200,667 and... it still works!

The memory in the router is rated for 667 at CL9 or 800 at CL11. Honestly I do not know which one would be more beneficial,
BUT definitely 667 is a lot better than stock 533... and for any real performance difference, we should compare stock memory
speed with maximum - that should yield something.

I would not go anywhere beyond 800 - this is not a PC, and I cannot increase any voltages... Let me try to set 800MHz... and it booted!!!!

7. VPN: So I measure the internet speed using 200Mb file download at testmy.net and this is highest ever on VPN: 22.5 Mbps
Turning VPN off, the same site: 24.5 Mbps This is, ladies and gentlemen, reason I overclock

Default kernel coniguration has CONFIG_EXT4_FS=m
Perhaps I will be able to mount my 4TB EXT4 formatted drive directly :D

edit:
CONFIG_LBDAF=y (http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/LBDAF.html)
Seems like Asus starts to understand what I want in a router:p
